Hi Ivan, I really enjoyed these series of videos after seeing your video on the stones. I really like that you are using the most modern tech with the NSK diamond stones along with the traditional natural stones. It's not often you get to watch someone so in tune with what they are doing, and turn something so simple into an art, but that is what I get from watching these. I do hope you keep on with these, they show your craft really nicely.
Thanks so much for the comments and insight into my work! You are correct I have always strived to bring modern ideas and techniques into a traditional world while upholding its core principles and values
I need to spend a bunch of time watching your videos. I'm a martial artist, but I also love greenwoodworking... spoon carving, in particular... so I'm sharpening knives and axes all the time, and I like to use water stones. Your channel is a goldmine. Thank you for sharing these things with us. 👍👍
Amazing series! Love seeing your process. I’d love to see more of your thoughts and sharpening with natural stones and what you see in how the blades interact with the stones. Really digging what NSK has to offer, too! Great stuff!
Indah sekali
I'm new here but I watched all the episodes in one sitting. Beautiful job. I subscribed to the channel and I'm patiently waiting for more materials. Greetings from Poland.
We both encountered many different crafts and knife indestry in Japan, but we are beginners at making videos, so we were worried that we were not communicating well, but happy to hear that you are enjoying our videos!
Fantastic series you guys. This has been wonderfully entertaining and educational to watch. And early next week!? I’m already frantically refreshing the Tosho page 😅
You are truly amazing, you can be proud of yourself. I hope you will make a lot of video like this. What is the black lamp that you are using just above you when sharpening ? Thank you!
Cool! Any chance you could do a video on polishing and sharpening a large clamshell/ curved bevel knife, maybe on an Usuba? I've found it almost impossible to get consistent nice bevel finish with natural stones (finger stones got there). Thanks!
I greatly enjoyed this and would love to see more in depth start to finish for instance straightening if you do that. Currently sharpening my Carter and my Takeda. The Carter is just a quick touch up but the Takeda is going to get some major work. While it has always cut very well I saw areas where I could improve it but as usual was too busy with customers knives to work on my own but now its time has come. Happy New Year I am looking forward to the next series.
Thank you so much! Yes definitely straightening is part of the foundation! We will get into straightening and other aspect of sharpening and polishing next year.
That’s unusual to see someone not using the full stone but just the top. Is it because you want to only grind in the same direction parallel to the edge ? Great work btw
Thanks for watching, yes this technique is to grind in parallel to the edge, but what you don’t see is me moving across the entire stone as this is only a few minutes of work seen in this video that takes hrs to complete
Very cool and interesting to see! I'm fairly new to knife sharpening/polishing but I'm like a sponge trying to soak up all the information I can. Where you live looks so beautiful and I love how the sun illuminates your work space. Great video work! I'm curious your back-story and what you guys are up to. Whatever it is, I'm a little bit jealous :P
I would love your indepth thoughts about what you do. Like when do you know you are done with ground work on first stone, how much pressure or not and why. How do you know to go to next stone or have to go back down. How do you test for sharpness or what you are looking for in terms of feeling. What you do for consistency ect ect. I love sharpening but i always try to get it sharper get it better and strive for mastering somthing that you cant master but trying to achieve it nonetheless! The videos are interesting they could be longer for all i care and love to know what you do and looking for.
Thank you for watching. We will include your requests in a list of future videos about my particulars and decisions on more detailed sharpening. Please leave a comment if you have any other new requests that would be helpful for you.
We just made a video for your question about what I look for when I move onto the next stone. Thank you for your comment and I hope you'll enjoy this video! 📷 How Professional Sharpener Decide When to Move onto The Next Stone on Edge Sharpening ua-cam.com/video/rFeHGFq4QT4/v-deo.html
Hope you are charging a decent coin for all the hard work you've put into this knife. Just a quick question, i noticed your sharpening strokes are very different to the others on UA-cam. They tend to use more of the surface area of the stone, whereas you tend to use short strokes. Is it because of the differing angles on the kireha?
You can find a link to the list in the overview section. We have posted videos of everything from the time we received it from the craftsman to the rough sharpening of the 200 grit until and sharpening with a natural sharpening stone, so please take a look.

What a beautiful collection and process you have built. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you so much ! We hope to get into more detail about stones and process in upcoming videos
Great finish...would love to see more in depth work by ivan
Thank you, we will definitely get deeper into technique as we move into different sharpening next year
Fav series!!!
Hopefully more is to come 🍻🍻
Yes we are working on a few new series for next year

Wow, the time that went into this knife!
It'd be interesting to get side by side images or video before/after using stones so we can inspect the changes along with you
That’s a nice idea we will definitely try to incorporate this in future videos
very educational series!
Fantastic series you guys. This has been wonderfully entertaining and educational to watch. And early next week!? I’m already frantically refreshing the Tosho page 😅
Very very nice work with this blade, the steel pattern is amazing. Looks like 日本刀 👍😉
Thank you very much!
I really love the videos, would it be possible for you to teach how to create convex, flat, concave grinds with sharpening stones?
Thank you! I will add your request to our list of future videos
not bad ... very nice work
You are truly amazing, you can be proud of yourself. I hope you will make a lot of video like this. What is the black lamp that you are using just above you when sharpening ? Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words, very much appreciated! The lamps I use are Yamada Z-light 6500k
@@ivanyuka-japan Thank you =)

Thank you ! Yes I think in the near future we will
Do a few series on single bevel I’ll make sure to include Usuba in that.
Could you make a video about natural whetstones? Please
Let us put on our future video list!

@@ivanyuka-japan thanks Ivan
This guy is so old school and meticulous in his art, I shudder to think what he must charge for sharpening. I'm sure its worth every penny though.
Hope you are charging a decent coin for all the hard work you've put into this knife.

Thank you ! I often use shorter strokes with varied pressure for accuracy and consistency in polishing and geometry
Wheres the sharpening process
