    Buying an expensive helmet also helps prevents falls, since you think about the cost of landing on your noggin :)

    Having had a big fall in November last year, I fractured my sacrum, took a LOT of skin off my left and lost any recollection of where I was I ended up in hospital for 2 days. The last thing I remembered of the ride was going back to get my helmet I'd forgotten from the house. It saved my life.

      I agree, he is persuasive. And I can hear it now, "Coming up next on QVC, Dan Lloyd of the Global Cycling Network. He has a truckload of bike helmets and these can be worn anywhere, so stay tuned for the next three hours."

    With a hot and sweaty Hong Kong summer not far away, the vents look fantastic. Cant wait to get one. The Orange reminds me of my parent's Saab 99 in 1975 - Sunset Orange for hi-vis safety.

    I realize a bug net at the intake vents would increase drag - but nothing like getting a bee stuck in your helmet to make you forget about aerodynamics.

    If the straps are the same as their other helmets they definitely aren't 'fully' adjustable. I've got an octol and the plastic ear parts of the straps aren't adjustable, in that you can't adjust their length. Which means for my large ears they sit too close up to the lobes. I definitely blame myself for not testing it properly before buying, but it's a definite minus for an otherwise awesome helmet.

    I hated the design of POC helmets. I thought they were FUGLY. The group I rode with started using it so I ended up buying one to match. Since then I learned to love POC. I tried Synthe for looks but ended up going back to POC for safety features.

    The explanation of the Venturi effect is a bit insufficient. In your drawing you show it somehow better with the use of the cross section and not like set with the volume (for speeds bellow Ma 0.3 (~330 km/h) air can be considered incompressible, meaning no change in specific volume / density). If the cross section decreases, the velocity increases. This is however not the Venturi effect, but a continuity law (What goes in has to go out). The Venturi effect is the phenomenon of a decrease in static pressure in such narrower cross sections (Explanation in short: the total energy of the flow has to stay the same and so the static pressure has to "borrow" the energy for the higher speed).

    The "extended Computational Fluid Dynamics" is a marketing wording that means nothing. I can run CFD on my home computer.. it ain't rocket science.
    Here the marketing people should come up with other buzz words.. or just be honest and let us know key facts of the development of the helmet.
    I like POC, but dont oversell me stuff.

    • @grosmorisse
      @grosmorisse 6 років тому +2

      "I can run Photoshop on my home computer, so graphic design ain't rocket science". Just because one can run ANSYS Fluent or OpenFOAM on their home machine doesn't mean they have the knowhow to run simulations that will yield usable results for engineering and product design. If you do have these skills, I encourage you to apply to on of our many of research opportunities here : www.usherbrooke.ca/genie/futurs-etudiants/2e-et-3e-cycles/projets-de-recherche-offerts/ (hope GCN doesn't mind me recruiting students in their comment section : ) ). As for "key facts of development", I thought they were pretty clear in the video (and the one where Simon visits the POC headquarters). Their goal was to make an aerodynamic helmet while improving the safety aspects. They improved aero by modelling and CFD, and they improved safety by building upon their octal model, analysis on crashed octals, and the development of a new liner based on what they found in up-to-date collision research. Honestly, in terms of buzzword marketing, this is probably the most grounded, representative use of the phrase "computational fluid dynamics" I have ever encountered

    • @jorgecalderon9678
      @jorgecalderon9678 6 років тому

      I agree with you Jean-François that having the tool is different to have the expertise to use it. And I overall agree with your reply. As you mentioned, POC shows in their factory video crash research and other good scientific evidence.
      My point was more on over-use of CFD as a marketing buzz words. In this day and age, I give for granted, perhaps I shouldn't, that most products undergo a certain degree of CFD if aerodynamics are a important design attribute. In the POC Ventral, they even talk about Venturi effect, for example I would like to know more about it, how does this works when in this case the upper part of the channel is the smooth helmet and the lower part is hair. Hair, I imagine, is not exactly great at not creating a laminar layer or what the head angle to drag sensitivity is... these sort of things is what I would like to hear more in depth.
      In my opinion, to hear that they use CFD is like if for a bike frame they claim to use finite element analysis (FEA), to illustrate the point.

    the only way I'm going to wear something that (comparatively) ugly is if I see certified testing results proving to me that it is substantially more protective than other more attractive designs. If they all meet international standards and no manufacturer wants to be the first to display actual test results or lobby for an increased set of requirements then what is the point of all this? No helmet manufacturers' site display anything other than basic compliance statements. If their lawyers will not and cannot allow them to represent the actual effectiveness of their products then I cannot figure out why to buy them. "Meets CPSC Requirement XXXX or ABC Requirement XYZ" is a complete hedge against liability since the maker does not have to represent the helmet's fit for use and effectiveness. "Hey the government says this standard is good and we meet it" means you are all the same. You can't have your cake and eat it too. So which of you makers has the balls to actually show how your product is better? 1% more aero than the last model? LoL 1% of basically irrelevant is very irrelevant.
