thats a good place to start for the timing but not everything the entire procedure is to actually set timing advance pin to pin is for initial install.
You have to look at the cam travel. Both intake and Exhaust lobes would be off the lift lobe of #1 or #6 depending which position your in. If it is a mechanical pump you could look at the timing pin hole as well.
What are the part numbers for those timing pins ? My 3306 pump is a 4An145-21-L6 slightly different and I need the pin

how do you know if number 1 or 6 is TDC with the cylinder head off?
The front of the block is machined all the way to the head deck.
