  • www.rugged-cctv... Ever wanted to know what the different components needed for video signal transfer over Cat 5 cable was? Well here is your chance to learn it all...Ok at least most of it. Components and distances are gone through as is power requirements. If you have any questions give us a call at 1-866-301-CCTV.

This is exactly the info I was looking for to cement the concept in my mind. Thanks!

You're correct on the balun distances being for video ONLY. Because we NEVER recommend transferring power over cat5 for any voltage. It will damage the cabling, introduce interference into your signal and potentially damage the camera as well. 18 gauge / 2 conductor power wire is the smallest power wire we recommend, and most of our cameras run at 12V DC so as long as you have the correct power supply, and you are within the distance limitations - no converter will be needed.

Keep in mind the distances she's talking about when using powered and non powered baluns are for VIDEO. Not for the 12v power line. You're going to need a 24v power supply and then a 24v to 12v converter for long distances.

She talked so fast I have no idea what she was saying. Slow it down. We are here because we are clueless and trying to learn. Hard to do when you're talking 100 MPH.
