    For anyone who wants to copy their clothes, I would recommend a more precise method: don't just lay it on the fabric and cut around. Lay it on a piece of paper (sewing pattern paper, or any wrapping paper), draw around it and then clean up the lines (make straight what should be straight, smooth out the curves). If it's meant to be symmetric, like panties, tank top, t-shirt), make it symmetric - fold the paper in half and correct any asymmetries. Not only will you get a cleaner pattern, but also a pattern you can reuse, or use as a base to draft your new, experimental patterns :)

      I think it's funny Mia sharing how long it took her because when I sew it takes a million times longer. I'm a perfectionist so, I can't imagine me doing it like that. It's great to see though that it still turns out great!
      What I do is: wash the fabric first, iron it, carefully trace your garment onto pattern paper and cut it out, carefully trace pattern onto fabric with seam allowance and cut it out and then finally pin and sew.

    Hey lingerie designer here 🙋🏻‍♀️ you absolutely can use t shirt cotton material for underwear as long as it has a good lining/decent fabric for the gusset material if you line the entire pant then there’s no need for the extra gusset either :) you did so well recreating the pants, lingerie is NOT an easy hobby to get into making so well done you! 🖤

      @PaigeTylerStevens Рік тому +47

      @@Zharoze hey! So started with a soft cup bra without fastenings could be good kinda like a crop top? Or even just a basic bodysuit/swimsuit so you can get to grips with stretch material and working with elastics too! If you follow Evie La Luve and mmadalynne they have some fantastic patterns and tutorials out there for beginners 😊 good luck and I wish you the best of luck!!

    mia i have an idea- you should make a series that's like "make, thrift, or buy?" (or something like that) where you basically take either a super popular clothing piece like the skims dress or just any item in general and then see whether it's more worth it to buy, make, or thrift.
    you could buy the piece, try to make it, and then also try to thrift it!

    Tip for fluffy fabric: my mom made for my grandma fluffy pants from the fluffy blanket. She literally bought blanket big enough for king size bed that was fluffy on both sides and made them. Even the blanket wasn't too expensive (like 15€ maybe) and she made 3 pairs of pants. Later I've seen similar pants for the price 15-20€ per pair

Please stay tuned that should be live before the end of May 🤞🏻🤞🏻I love seeing your comments expressing an interest in sewing.. Use a zig zag stitch when sewing stretchy fabrics! It’s allows the fabric to stretch and move without as much risk of the stitches ripping/coming undone.

From glueing your clothes to sewing amazing pieces. Now, when it comes to comparing prices... On one hand Skims probably pay cheaper for fabric from buying in bulk, on the other hand when making it yourself you're not calculating paying for the design nor anything else that comes with marketing, website costs, employees, etc. But I think it's neat to know for how much you would be able to make the piece yourself.

    This is amazing, Mia!! Love that you just go for it in your sewing ☺️
    If you want a tip (or not-sorry♥️), to easier trase a T-shirt or sweater, just trace one side and fold that side over so it matches up perfectly! Not that you didn’t do a good enough job, you really did! Just thought it would be helpful for another time ☺️

    Just wanna say, I started to watch yours videos when wish was a thing, and used to love those "expectations vs reality" shopping videos. However, I kind of grew up with you and now I can really appreciate the value of a nicely done clothing, even better a hand made clothing
    So thank you for that, thank you for being relatable and open to personal growth 😊

    I really hope you keep this up and learn more about construction, pattern drafting and finishing stitches! Honestly some of what you pay for is the skills involved in these things, so that the final product is more durable, uses less fabric and lays nicer/bunches less. Honestly if you do these and replicate the fast fashion brands you’ll probably make higher quality items! Starting tip, fold your fabric across (left and right edges together, so that both sides of a piece are identical! Especially helpful for sleeves.

    EDIT: PLEASE do an in depth video on making pants bc it’s so confusing to match how the leg pieces are supposed to go together and where you need to sew them

    When I was living in the mountains in the North of Vietnam in a black Hmong village, I made a garment entirely for the only time in my life. From growing the plants, make the fabric, growing the dyeing plants, dyeing the fabric, making the pattern, sewing the fabric + the hours of embroidery work. We didn't make the threads and needles, except when we needed silk thread, we would make it from silk fibers that we didn't make but bought.
    I love that video, the fact you added the time of labor in the price, but it would be super interesting to make a video including everything that is needed into the process of making a garment.
    making a pattern and making fabric are time consuming tasks that are not included in the final price of the video (which is normal since it is addressed to people making their clothes while having access to fabric and already existing garments), but in the case of a hypothetically store bought piece of clothes, the price should contain all of this. I think it would also be interesting to compare the price of all those steps if we paid canadian wage and compare to what the companies pay for fabric and garments in less developed countries to acquire it.
    Also I would like to share a youtube channel I really like, where this girl makes garments, furnitures, food, etc, from scratch. She is called Li Zi Qi and it is really amazing to see

      Thank you for outlining all the costs of materials and labor that really go into creating a finished project because a human being or environmental resources are involved at every part of the production process. When we devalue labor and fair production processes, we all lose.

    I love everything about this! When I saw that you were adding the wage in it I thought “well if you want for self it’s the same to add it or not because the money saved is for yourself” but then taking in consideration that it is a brand that not only pays for fabric and thread, I do kinda understand prices now that I have a business myself. You do not only pay for fabric, wage and thread, but tags, a place to make them (like an office or ware house or factory idk) plus all the equipment, furniture, light, etc. also they pay to have a website on, packaging and some of them include a bit of the price of shipping. I understand the concept of the video and love it and agree that if you can’t afford something you can diy, I just think we have to consider all I said above before going on saying that something is increible expensive if we don’t actually know all that comes into it even if it’s a billionaire who’s making it

    It was interesting to see adding the wage. Though to me it doesn't make sense to go for minimum wage since it is a skilled job. So yes I understand the trouble with adding it to the price. Just giving information how long it takes already helps.

    • @LikesLimes
      @LikesLimes Рік тому +1

      Agreed that this is skilled labor and it’s not just the base wage, but also benefits and payroll taxes, that are included to have a true comparison of costs for any responsible manufacturing company.

    • @discol4549
      @discol4549 Рік тому +1

      Agreed! The whole purpose of adding the wage etc is so that when you are looking at a price in the store you’re considering that it’s not just the cost of the materials that make up the sales price. It’s someone’s livelihood, marketing, and business costs as well. That being said- I’m all for making it myself for much less if I can, so I understand where Mia might wonder about including the other costs for retail purchase when she wasn’t making it to sell.

  • @manlindabelle

    Hey Mia, adding the cost of the hourly wage is to make your estimated costs more accurately equivalent to Skims. Sewing *is* a fun hobby for you, but when Skims prices their items, one of the factors is the wages they must pay for the workers who make their clothes. It's kind of nit-picky when you're just doing it for fun, but on the other end of the spectrum, people who make clothes as their livelihood have their skills and services undervalued when the idea is perpetuated that it should ONLY cost what materials you use. I know you yourself are not saying that, but people look at sewing videos and expect tailors and seamstresses to work for less because they see this idea on social media.

      To add to that, the hourly wage for sewing is, and should always be paid at, higher than minimum wage! Minimum wage jobs are for unskilled labor, work that you can literally show up with no experience and still do a decent job, and sewing is definitely a skill that needs experience to learn and do well, as demonstrated by Mia herself.
