Bought this back in 82. After the fascination with the synth sounds had passed, i used it a lot just like a normal electric and i still love to play it. I think it is an excellent e-guitar and one can get beautiful warm tones out of it. Looks really beautiful too, although there is nothing too fancy about it.

Thanks for sharing this as I was curious about the guitar on its own. I am in love with that design. Greco had the GO series which borrowed heavily from the design but with no synth capability. They go for a lot less money. But I would love one of these Rolands too!

@@haysfordays Along with this guitar - the G3O3 - there was another model, the G808. It had exactly the same shape, dimensions and electronics, except that it is a neck-through-body "sandwitch" of different woods - maple, ash and walnut. I expect that it would sound very much like the mahogany/maple top body/set mable neck G303, because the pickups are exactly the same and in the same position. Those GRECO GOs were made at the same time at the Fujigen factory just like the Rolands and they were constructed like the G808. neck-through-body/sandwitch of different woods. Beautiful guitars, each model with different - non synth - electronics.

@@theo9952 Such great design. I think I like the solid dark stain look of the 303 the best.

@@haysfordays I agree, I love that ''classic'' mahogany/maple top body with set-in neck too, but those GRECO GOs look really beautiful too. You can look them up. I sent links but i don't see them now. Their prices, depending on the model, vary from 700 dollars (or Euros) to 1.300, all used of course, but they all look like new.

2:18 very similar to the Robert Fripp's tone in the "Elephant Talk" solo.

Wilhelm Orangenbaum yes, the gr300 is a great instrument, but with very limited range, its difficult to find different tones than the ones used by Fripp, Summers, Methiny ecc.

That's right, but I think it's fine. I am a strong believer that vintage musical instruments (made between 1930s or 40s - 1980) are the best instruments due to their own limitations, from acoustic instruments to electromechanical to electronic, these instruments forced the musicians to use their creativity, synthesizers and pedals of the 70s and early 80s are the proof of this.

Pat Metheny is still using those as stage guitars, using that synth sound instead of Distortion.

Greetings from Montréal, Québec, Canada !!! Same as Theo9952, bought a 'LEFTHAND' GR303 in 1982, but did not really play it to enjoy all its features, but got it back out of the closet yesterday, sent it to a Luthier to have it dusted off, control board/panel and knobs cleaned-up, new strings and let's see what Music comes out of it this time !?! Cheers !!!

    GR300はタッチレスポンスへの反応非対応とか、レイテンシーとか言われるが、あまりそう言うのが気にならない不思議なギターシンセだ。魅力ある音なんだな。

I was curious to know you achieved the first trump sound, that slow swell sound. Thanks

if I remember well the sweep sound is made putting the attack knob at max, also the rise time, the filter quite close to get a darker "pad" tone, then use the touch tremolo at taste.
