If you peddle down the Semois into France, you might get into real large groups of swans (+20 individuals) and get 'an escort' with full display... mostly harmless if you respect their privacy and distance. Just acknowledge their show off by making yourself small, and you might be able to bath with them, as I once did in LaCuisine (also on the Semois River) after a stand off more than ten years ago. They are really great, very protective, but always use the same tactics (escort on the outskirts from upstream to downstream) so one just has to respect their space. And yeah, you just don't want to fight them...
I just saw the swan attack moment... Normally swans escort one from behind, so they can keep an eye on one and control the situation. Before they do so, they might fly in clapping wings to make a huge impression, but this is not an attack yet, just a sign to better obey... They won't - or hardly - pass the boat at this stage, just show their dominance. They might land next to the boat in full dwing, but than go to the rear for an escort. Once in this position, one should always try to spot the other swan (on the nest, or swimming with the kids) and peddle away from them... THIS will signal to the swam one have excepted his conditions and will oblige to his will. It is the best way to stay out of trouble! If one doesn't comply, the swan might swim next to the boat again, with swollen wings, a big neck, sometimes even making sounds or - and this is another (last) signal/demand - swim in a kind of macho way, i.e. full force, slow down, full force, slow down, trying to make larger wakes and a threatening sound. One should always comply at this point and move out of the way of the other swan. If not, the swan will attack. I do not have much experience here, but it might start at the rear and if not complying, it might swim around the boat and start an attack. A frontal attack is definately telling one not to approach the other swan as it shows the attacking individual is fed up now and very very serious. So from the footage I see, you should have immediately peddled to the right hand side as soon as possible and definately as soon as it positioned itself between the boat and the other swan (at the left hand side close to the bridge. That could have avoided the hazardous situation imho. So even if we think they got half the width of the river, it is really not about the amount of space they got, but about the signal you sent when you move out if the way (to comply with their demands). Moving when they ask you to do so, is showing respect and avoids dangerous situations, giving them a clear reason not to attack. ;)
Beautiful!! Angry swan 😅 What an experience that must have been!
Aggressive swans = biggest hazard on Belgian rivers 😀
