I tried watching History and Discovery Channel documentaries about the Aztecs, but they were literally unwatchable with the overly dramatic music and jump cuts like it was a bad action movie with very little substance. Thank you for respecting your audience enough let the history speak for itself! What a fascinating story you tell here.
Thank you, really glad you thought so!
I agree completely. And I would add that I get tired of the British accents that sound very affected to my “American” ears. Please, let’s just have more American documentations presented with our comfortable American accents.
So sorry about the above comment. I didn’t realize that Paul produced and narrated this fascinating documentary.
So many of those "documentary channels" do wonky things with volume. The speaker is super quiet, so I turn the volume up, then the ads every 3 minutes are unnervingly loud. Or the music is in the foreground and the speaker is in the background... As someone who listens to documentaries with earbuds while at work, I definitely appreciate the sound balance and the lack of ads mid-video. I also appreciate that the narration is thorough enough that it is perfect for listening to, but I also like that there's visual aids when he talks about art and stuff... This is definitely my go-to channel for learning history, especially since he often acknowledges that Eurocentric "historical facts" are more often than not quite problematic.
@@FallofCivilizations Your style and presentation....-I can't boast about enough!!! perfect delivery, I pretend I could read a part in it sometime!!. Great stuff and I just let all of them play on repeat.
Please do Alexander the Great some day! Best to you and you scholars!
The way you spent 16 min going from dinosaurs to horses and their extinction, just so you could point out the irony that the Aztecs would meet their downfall by Europeans coming over on horses was BRILLIANT.
It should have spent an additional 20 minutes for context.
The setups this guy does in every episode are gold
This is the best History series ever, amazing l listen to it as often as l can, it 😂beats TV, Netflicks etc highly recommend. Brilliant .
It’s sad how absolutely deluded and beguiled you are related to rats 🐀 maybe you and they talk about time like it’s nothing and cannot be known accurately fact .
Wait till the end of episode 2 then you'll see another reference back to the dinosaur. Nicely done.
Other Historians: to tell this story properly we go back a little and start from the beginning.

Hahaha, perfect
16 minutes in, when we get into the main story, I had to pause and reflect on what an absolutely epic intro that was
If you watched the 2nd part of this you’d know why he mentioned the flying dinosaurs.
I had to stop and double-check what I was listening to!
I love the fact that he enunciates everything really well. It shows great respect to every culture he works on. Greetings from México.
I don’t want to detract from your message because I completely agree with you but *enunciate* is the correct term :)
THE INFORMATION THAT HE GIVES IS WRONG! THERES A LOT OF MISLEADING FACTS! I KNOW MY ROOTS AND THIS IS NOT !!!
@@enri777zz rigght bud. You saying that is pretty arrogant. Do you even begin to grasp the amount of work that goes into this? Literally months of unbelievably intensive research, by an entire team. They're obtaining reliable sources which, believe it or not, is incredibly hard for a civilization that existed over 600 years ago. Especially when that civilization is using pictographs and phonetic logograms. Unless you have attended university and/or dedicated most of your life to the pursuit of knowledge in any specific history field, I HIGHLY doubt you know, or can even talk about history such as this channel does.
I am, however, genuinely interested in what the narrator said that is not an accurate, or as near as we can get, representation of Aztec history.
Calling them Aztecs is Eurocentric. He also mispronounces the -tl at the end of words in nahuatl. It's pronounced like a hard T. You're actually suppose to make sure your tongue taps the roof of your mouth.
You being from Mexico and acknowledging this is pretty awesome! Greetings to you from Canada!
The duality of man
Nezahualcoyotl building libraries while Izcoatl burns books
It was actually Tlacaelel who burned the books. And it was mostly the beginnings of the city.
Yeah, humans have truly always lived in a society.
Can we take a second to appreciate almost 2 hours of content with minimal ads. Perfect for listening to as I fall asleep
I really appreciate how this documentary ACTUALLY spends time retracing the history of the Aztecs and doesn’t just skim through it and go directly to the arrival of the Spanish like every other one does, even though this a series about the fall of empires!
Your work is very impressive! I really enjoyed it!

Paul and team - Thank you again for another masterful content. I’m going through your videos rather slowly and in random order, but every video elevates my senses and transports me to these amazing ancient & medieval lands / cultures. This is my second gift to your channel because I feel this incomparable depiction of world history needs continuous encouragement of all kinds. Thank you again - I never thought that an Aztec story could be so captivating. Brilliant 👏🏼
Thank you my friend, that is very kind of you.

Yeah, I like my history and absolutely loved this video and all the other stuff Paul & team so thoughtfully create :)
It's a way to thank them for producing content which is more than watching a few movies at theater, which I may or may not like, and even if I like any I don't know how much it could permeate my mind & for how long. Whereas this video and others by FoC is the stuff that's just nitro for my brain :)
You produce some of the best history media content, not only on UA-cam, but anywhere at all. The attention to facts, the writing and narration, the production quality are all magnificent. We're very fortunate to be able to be watch this, and even for free
I told my wife "Sorry, babe. I got plans tonight."
That's right man, these podcasts are great
I find absolutely fascinating the way you tell these stories. The way you explain in detail all the context, including the geology/climate, the connection in time with other events around the world, the correlation with today's society...I am very thankful for your work. It helps me understand the past, and sparks curiosity for learning more!
Yes, I couldn't agree more. And it is all so well structured, with pay offs much later in the podcast: From 'And then one day a new star appeared in the sky.' after 3 minutes to 'The Aztecs knew no more about those ships than that enormous pterodactyl Quetzalcoatlus knew about the asteroid..' after 103. Thank you for doing this.
Thank you so much. We need these on every episode, wink wink 😉
As a Mexican- American historian, the end of this documentary-and the way you described the Ameridan people as ignorant to the approaching treat of European invasion, just as the dinosaurs were of the asteroid that destroyed their way of life, really hit me hard. Thank you for your creativity, Paul!
I've literally listened to this episode at least 10 times while sleeping, and the imagery so far (I'm 20 minutes in), is answering so many questions. What a brilliant production.
So glad you think so! Hope you enjoy the rest.

Damn brother that bit with the dinosaurs. Things like that set you apart.
I listen to these podcasts over and over and over when I go to sleep. They are simply perfect
Paleontologist here. Great video, but I should probably clear some things up:
1) Velociraptors were only found in Mongolia, though other dromeosaurs (or “raptors”) did live in the region of southern Mexico.
2) Quetzalcoatlus’s limb proportions show it was well-adapted to terrestrial locomotion, indicating it probably spent a substantial amount of time on the ground. It may have even hunted on the ground similar to modern marabou storks. That being said, it was probably still perfectly capable of flying when it wanted to.
3) North and South America only joined together about 3 million years ago. For much of its history, South America was an island continent.
You really knocked it out the ball park with this one. The timing of narration, video cuts and music alone put other channels to shame. This is why UA-cam (and by extension the internet) sometimes justify commanding four hours of my day. Thank you FoC!
do they pay you guys for this?

Amazing! Grew up in Mexico City and have never encounter a more fair and scholarly tale of the ancient cultures of today's Mexico. Worthy of University level programs. Can't wait to see part 2, which I guess starts with the arrival of Europeans.

Im addicted to Paul’s documentaries. I’ve never watched anything like these, with so much detail and references to the source of info. I love the way he brings the past into the present (starting with the discovery of a giant plaque in Mexico City, that once rested at the foot of an Aztec pyramid), and the descriptions of the land formations and comet are truly fascinating. To even hear words of Aztec poetry is incredible and touching. I’m on Roman Britain - The Work Of Giants Crumbled - now. The title is from an old English, Saxon poem as they marvelled at the ruins they found left behind by the Romans. Heading over to Patreon too. Thank you so much, Paul.
Thanks Dianne, I really appreciate the kind words!
As a black American, ancient cultures and civilizations are so fascinating to me for obvious reasons. Learning about the advancements and highlights of the Aztecs, Maya, Inca, Olmecs, Toltecs, Tonga and other civilizations of the Americas makes me really happy because it shows how Eurocentric history has been for centuries that entire civilizations of brown and black ppl throughout Africa, Asia and the Americas were nearly forgotten. But now thanks to YT channels like this and others, we can all learn about history from all over the earth including Europe. All civilizations have contributed to the advancement of human civilization and way of life and all civilizations should be studied.
I love that you not only give the history of the people in your videos, but also the geographic and anthropologic context! It gives me a better understanding of the civilization in totality and why things happened the way they did.
I live in Midwest, USA but even I have heard of Tenochtitlan and so I literally gasped when I heard it was found.
How old are you bro? Please, do tell what you were doing when you found out they found it and what went thru your mind? Thanks

I'm glad you set aside a whole episode detailing the history of Aztecs before the arrival of Europeans. Too often the only part of their history that is told is their conquest. They deserve to be seen on their own terms.
I mean, it is cool and all that our ancestors did get to be seen on their own terms, but we WERE sacrificing hundreds of people weekly.
Sure they were sacrificing tons of people weekly, but if you can think of a better way to keep the sun from burning out, I'd like to hear it.

What was revealed to you? Which part of this compilation of contradiction did you cotton to? Was it the part where these civilizations were so much more heavily populated and productive than Europe or the part where he drones on about how they never had the time to become as populated? Was it when he listed all the varied foods they had or the part where they didn't have time to properly develop the variety of food that the old world had?
