Compulsories music now is written at the US national level for young gymnasts, it's designed to be very simple and easy to keep track of the beat for young girls who are just learning to dance. It's also often specially written for USAG and the composers they pick are uhhh... royalty free level. Old elite compulsories used well known classical pieces, often with complex orchestration, as they were for a much higher level of gymnast and meant to test artistic expression above and beyond the simple tasks of staying on beat and performing the correct skills. Go look at old USAG compulsories from around the same time and they're really not much better than today lol
