- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 - 5 December 1791) was one of the most influential, popular and prolific composers of the classical period. A child prodigy, from an early age he began composing over 600 works, including some of the most famous pieces of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral music.

Duo for violin & viola No. 2 in B flat major, K. 424 (1783)
1. Adagio - Allegro (0:00)
2. Andante cantabile (8:00)
3. Theme with 6 Variations. Andante grazioso (11:08)
Arthur Grumiaux, violin and Arrigo Pelliccia, viola
Description by James Leonard
Among the least known but most charming of the mature chamber music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) are the two Duos for violin and viola, K. 423 and 424. Both were probably composed in Salzburg sometime between July and October 1783. Supposedly both were intended to be part of a six-piece collection of duets composed for Michael Haydn and commissioned by the Archbishop of Salzburg. The second of the two duets is slightly more expansive than the first in that the opening Allegro is preceded by an introductory Adagio and the closing movement is a set of variations on an original Andante grazioso theme. But the melodic charm, the contrapuntal inventiveness, and the sheer cleverness of Mozart's writing, which always seems absolutely perfect even though there are only two instruments, is consistently amazing and gives the Duo in B flat major a substance and integrity usually associated with quartets.

Less viola independence than the first one, but still... absolute perfection, in harmony especially.
I love the second movements in the duos... this one moved me to sobs. such sadness, yet filled to the brim with such gleaming hope and longing.
Mozart avec ce duo c'est un sommet de l'écriture musicale avec une extraordinaire verve inventive..

I'm a Pianist ,but I adore that Sound of Mozart's Duet -- to me 's unbelievable! Thanks A.Hrumyo--on of the best Violinists of his Time!
A.Grumieau... of course
This is the best combination of alto and soprano I've ever heard.
It's the only duo for violin and viola that I've ever heard. So, of course, it's the worst. And also the best. In any case, its delightful.
@@klop4228 Well, I think he could tell that from the title saying "No. 2."
@@pokerandphilosophy8328 you should check out the Martinu's madrigals for violin and viola
Beautiful...and wonderful music. I especially love in the first movement the amazing suspenseful passage in m. 59-61 and the canon in m. 105-119.

HERMOSO,,,, gracias por compartir tan esplendida interpretación ,,,, BRAVO!!!!!!
Perfekt
Amazing😍
😍
Interesting that this is longer than a lot of his symphonies
In Mozart's day, symphonies weren't viewed as that big of a deal as from the 19th century onward.
Dutiful in a young cell

these two duos are indeed charming, but like a style of music from the 1810s onward and extremely attributable to, among others, Ignaz Josef Pleyel. The length and style of the phrases are definitely from after Mozart's death in 1791 And how curious that the 6 duos ordered by the archbishop of Salzburg are nowhere to be found in the otherwise very complete princely archive of the princes bishops of Salzburg ? Grumiaux as always such elegance and his intonation is still unsurpassed to this day. Thanks for posting these little gems
How can I get this score?!😊
Do you know when this was recorded?
