  • I was asked how we mix our own fuel. I have seen a handful of videos on the process but I was asked what we do so here it is.
We run both 30% and 23.5% nitro. Both run a 23% oil mix.
    UPDATE 9January 2025:
A quick update, since this video was first recorded we have mixed over 108 gallons and the motors look fantastic inside. We run 23.5% on our larger motors like the 1.05, 96, and 120's. We occasionally mix a couple gallons for the 55 size motors and recently started trying out the OS91 Speed on 30% as well. Happy flying everyone!!!

We run this on OS 55HZR, OS 105HZR, YS91SR, YS96SRX, and the OS120SRX and the motors run cool and strong. I have had people buy a nitro blend which is nitro and methanol. What were the products you used in your mix?

EDIT: you cannot use my numbers as such without accounting for volume difference between weight-based proportions and the physical volume of each liquid.
Point is 1000 grams will not fill a gallon jug. “ SO” that took me to volume. Unless I missed the part where you said make several or hundreds of 1000gram batches and mix them all together 🤷 that’s all.
Me personally I’d rather mix once not three times.
( So yes for 30% 1279 / 766 / 1408 “Grams ) Will fill a gallon jug )this is the easiest way instead of mixing it 3 times.
I gave you the calculations for weight and volume. and still tried saying I was wrong.
So yea your video is a little misleading.

  • @WasPodie
    @WasPodie Місяць тому +2

You are wrong ….. and this is misleading.
I would like to see you mix this by grams (1000) to fill 1 gallon of fuel. You’re not filling that 1 gallon jug with 1000 grams of compounds.
This is the actual calculations below:
Full gallon (3785 ml) with 23.5% nitro content:
    Nitromethane:** 1002 grams
Klotz KL-189 Heliglo Oil:** 766 grams
    Methanol:** 1603 grams
Full gallon (3785 ml) with 30% nitro content:
    Nitromethane:** 1279 grams
Klotz KL-189 Heliglo Oil:** 766 grams
    Methanol:** 1408 grams

    • @biscaolena
      @biscaolena  Місяць тому

Agreed, the 1,000 grams of fuel does not make a gallon. It merely makes 1,000 grams of fuel. To get gallon you will need to make a couple 1,000 gram batches and pour them into your 1 gallon jug. Please check your math on your calculations.... Your 23.5% mix at the weights you stated weighs 3,371 grams (1,002+766+1603) and 1002 grams of nitromethane in your mix would actually be 29.7% (1,002 / 3,371 = 29.7%). The actual numbers for approx a gallon of 23.5% are Nitro: 783.96 grams, Methanol: 1,784.76 grams, and Klotz: 767.28 grams. Total weight is 3,336 grams and for instance the nitro percentage is 783.96/3,336 = 23.5%.

    • @WasPodie
      @WasPodie Місяць тому

@@biscaolena Both calculations are correct. I am being scientific you are just adding numbers. I didn’t have the time to write all this out.
      For 23.5% Nitro Content:
      Nitromethane 1002 grams
      - Specific Gravity: 1.127
      - Volume: 1002 grams / 1.127 = 889.35 mL
      Klotz KL-189 Heliglo Oil : 766 grams
      - Specific Gravity: approximately 0.9
      - Volume: 766 grams / 0.9 = 851.11 mL
      Methanol 1603 grams
      - Specific Gravity: 0.7950
      - Volume: 1603 grams / 0.7950 = 2016.98 mL
      Total Volume = 889.35 mL + 851.11 mL + 2016.98 mL = 3757.44 mL
      For 30% Nitro Content:
      Nitromethane 1279 grams
      - Specific Gravity: 1.127
      - Volume: 1279 grams / 1.127 = 1134.24 mL
Klotz KL-189 Heliglo Oil 766 grams
      - Specific Gravity: approximately 0.9
      - Volume: 766 grams / 0.9 = 851.11 mL
      Methanol 1408 grams
      - Specific Gravity: 0.7950
      - Volume: 1408 grams / 0.7950 = 1771.07 mL
      Total Volume = 1134.24 mL + 851.11 mL + 1771.07 mL = 3756.42 mL
Both calculations yield total volumes that are very close to 3785 mL (one gallon). The calculations for mixing one gallon with 23.5% and 30% nitro content are correct based on the specific gravity for each compound.
Scientifically you want to use milliliter for this not grams.
To mix the 30% nitro content fuel, you should use the following amounts based on the densities:
      Nitromethane 1279 grams
Klotz KL-189 Heliglo Oil 766 grams
      Methanol 1408 grams
For 23.5% Honestly I already written it above.
These amounts will yield approximately one gallon (3785 mL) of fuel with the correct proportions.
Here are the specific gravity don’t forget about these………..
      Nitromethane 1.127
      Methanol 0.7950
Klotz KL-189 Heliglo Oil approximately 0.9 could not find the actual.

@@WasPodie we are doing this different because we are mixing by "weight" and your content calculations are by "volume". When mixing by weight, your 23.5% Nitro Content example of 1,002 grams of Nitromethane into a total weight of 3,371 grams yields 29.7% Nitromethane by weight. And in your 30% Nitro content example your actually 1,279 grams of Nitro into a total batch weight of 3,453 grams which yields an actual Nitro content of 37% by weight. Thats why in our calcs you dont see us using SG at all. We don't care about the SG because are using weight only. As an aside, I spoke with Torco Fuels when we first started mixing and they confirm they mix their heli fuels like we do. They use weight to avoid any impacts due to changes in temp. Your approach of using volumes I think will yield much higher nitro content than intended. But..... have you mixed your fuels with your calculations? If those performed well for you then that mix works for you. We are over 100 gallons ourselves and couple of other clubs have mixed much more than us and this works very well as I noted above in the comments. ANYONE interested inmixing fuel, I suggest they make a small 1 gallon batch and test fly it. If it works for your motors then happy day. Happy flying.

@@WasPodie I was trying to keep the math simple so people would not make the mistake of calculating this incorrectly and running too much nitro. I do appreciate you pointing out that it will take mixing approx 3.3 batches to fill a 1 gallon jug. We mix five 1 gallon jugs to fill our 5 gallon jug so... :) Point taken and thank you. My real concern is you posted on this comment trail a mix that will actually yield a much higher nitro content. I would hate for someone to use your math thinking they are making 30% when they are actually making 37%. BUT ..... how does your fuel run? I really am curious how well it worked for you. Maybe we can increase our Nitro content a little more and improve if your getting good results with your mix? If you dont mind me asking.... how well does your motors run on your mix?
