I have been making home brew for about a year and have had no issues with my engine.

Hello Shane. Is it okay if I ask you for the instructions. I have model boat with piston engines, from size 20, 40 to 60 OS. Thanks.

Years ago I wrote a software in visual basic that tells me exactly how to modify or "re-blend" existing commercial glow fuels into the final brew or mix that I want. The same software also allows me to make my own blend from scratch. Since doing the math for re-blending fuel is a little tricky (And I am honestly lazy to do it on a regular basis), I immortalized all that math into 1 computer program. Been using it all these years and I can share it with anyone who needs it. And since the program is part of a converter calculator, it will convert all volumes into the units one is most comfortable with. Here in the Philippines we do not have access to pure nitromethane, but we can buy high-nitro content car fuel which in most cases, is too much nitro for my specific use (planes and helis), thus I resort to "re-brewing". If I have to make glow fuel from scratch it would just be what we call "FAI Fuel" (No Nitro). But if I re-brew, I would buy 40/9 Car Fuel (40% Nitro, 9% Oil) and convert it to 15/20 fuel (15% Nitro, 20% Oil). If I start with 4 liters of 40/9, by adding 1.773 liters of oil and 4.893 liters of methanol I would end up with 10.666 liters of 15/20 fuel. This is the kind of calculations the software makes for me.

Hi, in France and in all Europe we can find until one year only 16% fuel, m'y last bottles of 25% fuel will be over in a few months. I think for 25% fuel, i need to mix 25% nitro, 12% oil and 63% methanol, is that correct ?

You are right on the up front price, but one gallon of fuel and it's payed for it self.I plan on making a video soon of me making it so everyone can see how easy it really is.

Modern glow fuel uses a castor/synthetic oil mix. What kind of synthetic is that, if you know? Thanks

Question: What if I want to make 15% nitro? Is it:
    .15*128 = 19.2oz of nitro
    .12 x 128 = 15.36oz of castor oil
    The balance is Methanol?
    (100% - 15% nitro - 12% oil = 73%)
    .73 x 128 = 93.44oz of Methanol

    Is that right? (19.2+15.36+93.44 = 128oz)
I want to blend fuel for airplanes (not cars), any suggestions?
    Thanks

Koltz BeNOL castor 2 stroke oil says on the bottle it blends with methanol fuel, in fact I think I remember reading it was made with Nitro/Glo engines in mind. Maxima 927 is also supposd to mix with methanol, I use it for all my 2 stroke engines, haven't tried it with methanol yet though.

This excellent video is still around🙂👏🙌. How would the formula be affected if one wanted to add some sort of rust inhibitor/pigments into the fuel? How would that math work out? And what about fuel coloring? Would that affect the overall fuel mixture formula at all?

It is expensive to purchase the ingredients in bulk, but, once you finish your mix (on the assumption you made your mix accurately), you will saving a lot of money for your RC fuel.

Shane, thanks for the insight into making your own nitro fuel.
I really think you should manufacture your own brand and sell it cheaper than the big companies and you will do well my friend. Good luck. Thanks for sharing with us. Regards from Australia.
I don't think I would source components for making my own fuel here, as I would get a visit from all terrorist watchdogs out there!!!! Lol.

a history note. in the 50s nitro was a by product as industrial by product. great for drag raceing. then latter the government made them stop making it. now nitro is the main product. equals HIGH COST . safety note do NOT i MEAN NOT mix with hydrozine. you end up with a class "A" explosive.

100% nitro for planes and helis? Not even close! Planes use 10-15% nitro or less, and helis use 25-30% nitro with 23% oil, max!

    • @gstjohn03

Mick Carson 30% is a good starting point. I’ve heard up to 60% is used but the more nitro the harder it is on the engine.
