- Bill Doggett's "Honky Tonk" is a song that is so much fun to play and useful to know. All the old school guys know this song. I love the melodic, logical, but always interesting guitar solo that is so classic, you HAVE to play it. I'd love to know how much of it, if any, was improvised by guitarist Billy Butler. I used to love to watch Johnny B Moore play it-- all the answering horn parts-- he was all over every little detail in his own way! There are a few chords that I play "rougher" than the record-- good luck at capturing the elegance of those chords and runs on the V and IV and the turnaround. Have fun with this song. I forgot the key bassline, which folks often looked at me as if I was crazy if I asked them to play it. It's a I, II, major III, II and back to the I. Dang! Have fun playing this tune!

Man, this the best tutorial of Honky tonk I have seen so far. I cut my teeth on my Dad's 45 record of this when I was14. I'm now 73 , lost the use of my fret hand and only have my index and middle finger to play this which I have never mastered. You seem to love this as much as I do. Great job! Thank you!
thank you so much Amosmoses, I DO love it. good luck to you and all the best
The very first thing I ever learned as a twelve year old kid, my guitar-playing Brother-in-law having taught me, as he also showed me my first several chords.
He's playing with the Lord's band in Heaven now.
The second song that I learned, teaching myself on this one, is another legendary tune by another legendary guitarist, "Rumble", by the great legend Link Wray.
WoW, you Sir are a fantastic guitarist and teacher.... great job and THANKS 🎸
Yep Honky Tonk and Rumble and you are in business! thanks a lot Texas Tom!
This song was required learning if you wanted to play Blues in San Antonio because Clifford Scott was one of ours. I must admit that I never learned to play it correctly until I saw Rusty Zinn play it with JohnnyCat on a live stream performance during Covid. Great stuff Johnny!!
It's a true classic. Both those guys play it Great! Thanks Chuck!
Ironically, I think I first became aware of this tune in 1986 when I watched the movie "Blue Velvet". A strange way to be introduced to a blues classic, indeed. At any rate, that's what I remember. And you're absolutely right, this is a MUST. Such a classic solo, we all need to play it at least once. Most of us won't probably manage to capture all the nuances, but it's so much fun anyway... Yes, the F lump is a stretch but you've given us some useful tips. Thanks Johnny for this CLASSIC among classic blues solos!!
thanks, you made my day. Blue Velvet had great music in it. I used to play this song all the time. Luther Tucker w Cotton plays it great. Rock on Abrigospardos!
@@JohnnyBurginBlues So glad to hear that! Billy Butler recorded the very same solo on one of his solo albums. By the way, the other guitarist whose name you couldn't recall... Was it Benny Goodwin by any chance?
@@abrigospardos yes! ua-cam.com/video/mjYgU30xezg/v-deo.html
You really teach a lot of variations in your videos. These variations and options of the same things can blow our minds. Thank you so much. Christ Bless You. (Gian - BR/Sao Paulo)
thank you gian! hope to see you in BR one day!
Superb john
Thanks so much Valerie!
Very hard to do if you’re missing a third of your fretting index finger!
Looking good, sounding even better!
Thank you man!
Very cool tune! Thanks again Johnny
thanks alot man!
Another fantastic lesson my friend ❤
High praise coming from you Kirk thank you!
Thank you for this one, Johnny !
Excellent! Very useful and very well explained lesson. And very nice looking and sounding Guild Bluesbird. Q: how do these P90s (or P94s) compare to the stock SD pickups? Just curious... 😊
They're p94s, they came w this one, I really like the pickups a lot but don't have much experience w the others. Thanks a lot!
@@JohnnyBurginBlues Thanks, Johnny!😊
It's easier if you lower the E string a step to D.
whoah never thought of that!
