Thank you so much for doing this video! I find that your way of doing this is a lot safer (no lifting of pins) than some of the other tutorials online. Also using the other side of the logic board provides for a much cleaner way of diverting the wires.
+insomniamonkey Thanks! I put a good amount of research into this one -- I originally planned on lifting the pins, but found out the hard way it causes problems.
To anybody going to attempt this mod: The points shown on the video are easier to solder to, yes, but they also put too much pressure on the screen & backlight so itll look all screwy after you stick it all back together. There's another video on UA-cam that shows some alternate solder points on the other side of the board. They are a pain in the ass to solder to, but they also leave the screen without pressure on it once you're done.
Thanks for the tutorial man. I just finished a DMG project. I have another backlight, bivert and clear blue buttons on their way to toss into a pocket next :)
Excellent video (as is all of the rest as well). I definitely like this approach to the Pocket mod, much better than the other solutions I've looked into. I do think you could have put the bivert under the cart slot like other mods instead of the speaker, but still, excellent guide! Thanks so much for your excellent tutorials, I always enjoy and appreciate watching them multiple times before doing the mod!
+Rob Smith You're actually cutting the traces on the circuit board that go between the CPU and the pins. The traces are pretty thin, so just a couple of passes with the knife are all that's necessary. To be sure, you can check continuity using a multimeter.
Nice video ! But i suggest using the other solder point for the backlight on the pocket. You screen will do some flickering with some games like pokemon if you don't change that, because the backlight take power at the same resistor that the screen at thoses solder points. Even if it's more complicated to instal, i think that's just a better solution. But thanks you for all the videos you make :) ! Sorry if my english is weird by the way.
+ViewtifulSam Hey, i use thoses solder point : a.disquscdn.com/uploads/mediaembed/images/3216/7720/original.jpg Thanks to Hand Held Legend for the fast respond, it's a little tricky to instal but it worth the result.
+Cyriaque cool, thanks for the response. I'm glad you were able to solve the flickering. I'll keep this alternative in mind when installing the backlight on my GBP.
Glad I watched this before buying the backlight kit for my pocket. I really don’t see any difference between the two other than the bivert mod gives the screen a blue tint.
Can anybody help me? I've followed the tutorial and rechecked my solder points, polarization film, etc, but no matter what I do, I keep getting negative displays. It's just that one is a gray negative and the other is the traditional black.
I just biverted my pocket and have the same problem. I only get a inverted screen. Doesnt matter how I turn the polarization film :S Did you ever solve this problem?
Hi, i buy this pack a couple years a go and save because i dont have the necesary instrument to do it right. Now i do all like this video but my sceeen now show all colors inverted. What i do wrong? Please if you can help me
Hey Colin. Can I make a video suggestion? You should take an original DMG clear play it loud version and add LEDs to the internals so that when you power it on, it "lights up".
Will this Bivert mode change the shade of the backlight on all colours??, ive got a White, Yellow (or thought the Yellow looks like the Pea Soup Green of a DMG, is this correct??) and Blue back lights, so does this change the shader of these backlights?
Hi Colin, do you think it'd be possible to repair the contacts of a Nintendo cart (GB/C for example) using either replacement contacts or solder? I've been told the latter should help and if that is the case, would you be willing to make a video about it?
Coleman Prevatt I don't think that solves the problem. I'm looking to repair a section of the circuit board in a cartridge that connects to the system and allows it to recognise the game. Replacing it defeats the purpose of repair.
Hey Colin, great work on the videos! I have the installed the backlight for the gb pocket using your other tutorial video with great results. I was attempting to wire up the biverter but I'm having trouble getting solder to stick to the pads. Do you have any tips you could share here?
Apperantly I am not all that great at modding small electronics, as I managed to accidentally cut more traces between the cpu and the connector for the ribbon cable... Is there any way to fix those broken traces? I've been trying to solder wires between the points the broken traces connect but its incredibly difficult. I have also tried running solder over the places where the traces are broken and that doesn't work apperantly.
Is the sound muffled with the board on top of the speaker? I have a couple boards and backlights on order intended for a DMG and a MGB, but if the sound is affected I may stick with a backlight for the Pocket.
I haven't noticed any change in the sound quality with the board there. I've heard of some people putting the board near the cartridge connector, but when I experimented with that I found it caused the case to be tough to close completely.
+This Does Not Compute Finished up rewiring and it definitely fits really well with room to spare, I would recommend it for easier routing and tucking neatly. Thanks for the awesome how-to's!
would it be easier to use just the chip insted of the entire board since the board isn't as much of a short cut as it is in the dmg and without the full board it would maybe be easier to put closer to the source so you dont need to mess with so much wire
well i might try it later on, i just bought 2 back lights one for bmg and my gbp along with the glass screen protector for dmg and then one bivert moduale for use with the dmg, i've been wanting a backlight mod for a long time and figured i should finally do it
Excellent video as usual Colin. Interesting way to install the bivert module. I've never seen that before. I'm guessing you came up with that method yourself? As for the installation though, I find it better to lift the pins on the cpu, as you don't need to cut any traces, which makes the mod reversable if you ever need to in the future. I originally used the pads on the back side of the motherboard, like you do, but found it quite tedious routing wires around the board, so I solder my wires directly to the pins of the chip and LCD connector. There are also ground and VCC points on the front side of the board too, so you don't need to route any wires around the board. Your installation does look alot neater than mine though.
+AndehX Thanks! I've seen the method you described, and that's certainly another option that would work well. The Pocket's case is a lot tighter inside than the DMG so I was concerned about it not closing properly if the soldering was done to the front of the board. I figured that the way I showed would yield more consistent results.
+This Does Not Compute yeah its easier to close the case up with your method, definitely, the only worry I had was that the wires being soldered directly behind the screen might end up putting too much pressure on it, creating pressure points on the screen, or even potentionally damaging the screen cable over time. Who knows....
The pink ones are easier to find and sometimes cheaper too. You can get replacement shells + buttons on eBay for like $12 in plenty of different colors. That's what I did with mine and have a new looking SP-101 for cheaper than many on eBay.
This isn't really concerned with the video but I was wondering if you could show how to clean out the PSone (slim one). Thanks. Good video though keep it up.
so.. just backlit game boy pocket is similar to bivert DMG gameboy ?! I am so confused. I would just buy the finished modded one but I don't know which one to get. I don't mind bivert DMG as long as the bivert mod reduces motion-blur.. this bivert mod on gameboy pocket looks so hard to me considering my skill LOL
Thanks for the video, been debating between this and the biverted DMG (playing GB games on a color or GB boy Colour isn't cutting it, even when holding down Left+B when powering on. Would you recommend this or the DMG's end result?
+FireMrshlBill I think the bivert mod is more effective on the DMG's screen, but I prefer a backlit Pocket without the bivert mod (to keep the pixels grey instead of blue). It's really just a matter of personal preference.
+This Does Not Compute hi sir good day!! i bought this gameboy advance sp and it has this weird problem where whenever i charge it the orange light indicating that its charging only last for 1 sec then it disappears. I bought a new charger and a new battery but it doesnt fix the problem. Can you help me about this? i would really appreciate the help
+Shindensen That's a common problem that happens to the DS series as well. I haven't done a video on it specific to the GBA SP, but it's likely that the tiny internal fuse is blown. Looks like there are a few guides out there if you search for them. Good luck!
+This Does Not Compute btw i dont know if its the fuse but i bought a new battery and when i turned it on its working . It might be the charging port thats broken
Please make a video about changing the gameboy pocket burned polarizer. And finding an original one becausw what they do this they is use a dmg polarizer and it will look like a dmg green screen.
+Danny Rouse I believe so -- it's very unlikely the internals of the two versions are significantly different -- but haven't gotten my hands on one to take apart yet.
Does anyone know of someone who offers installing the backlight and bivert mod into a DMG professionally? I own a beautiful condition Play It Loud transparent clear GameBoy that I would like this kind of enhancement done to. I have some soldering skills myself, but given that this is a transparent GameBoy, I'd like someone to do it that is a real expert not only at this specific mod, but also at soldering in general. The work has to look elegant because it will be at least partially visible through the case at all times.
Amazing job Colin, i love your videos and how instructional they are! Out of curiosity, have you ever done, or know of any kind of lighting kit for the NeoGeo Pocket (and/or Pocket Color)? I love that console and its screen is amazing, but the lack of light reaaaaaally hurts :\
The NGPC uses the exact same technology in its screen as the Game Boy Color. (In fact, it's from the same manufacturer, just a different model number.) It should be possible to frontlight it, but I'm not aware of anyone making them specifically for the console. Backlights, unfortunately, aren't an option.
Oh i see, i guess that makes sense. I know the screens on both were similar, but never knew they were made by the same manufacturer. Always learning! Then the backlight issue would be true for most color screens of this kind (Like WonderSwan, etc) , right? It is a shame, since those gorgeous colors end up so washed out with the frontlighting... Thank you Colin, have a nice weekend :)
i finished this mod and the screen looks good! the only problem is now it's not displaying any gray pixels... is this normal or did i do something wrong?
That's how you normally install this module in a DMG, yes. The clearance inside the Pocket's housing is much tighter, though, and solder points are in different places. At the time this video was made, there were no dedicated modules designed for the Pocket. Installing it how I did was the most surefire way to actually make it fit.
Hmm. Honestly, I'm pretty disappointed by the result. For me, personally, it's not worth the effort. Thank you so much for your awesome videos. You can see how much work goes into them.
No, it's just stuck to the speaker for room purpose. The GB Pocket is really tight. Basically, what the Bivert does is reducing motion blur and enhancing contrast.
Just made this mod for my GBPocket. Here few additions: 1. Wire. Better to use wire from old headphones. That wire very thin and you will not have problems when you start to assemble all back. Wire from HHLegends doesn't fit for me. 2. DO NOT try to unsolder IC legs from motherboard and do exact as you can see in this video (ua-cam.com/video/f85v4hqbcJc/v-deo.html) 1:18.
Hmm, doesn't look like a huge difference in this case. If I were to trick out a GBP I'd go with just the backlight because I prefer the gray pixels and the contrast is nearly the same, though the original DMG ("brick") looks amazing with a biverter, the contrast pretty much looks doubled in TDNC's video and the pixels look to be a nicer, darker, contrastier blue, so I'd definitely bivert that. I'm almost tempted to buy an old DMG and stick a backlight + biverter in it now (I still have my childhood GB lying around but A) It's a transparent one and B) sentimental value (got it when I was 6), so I'd just buy some less rare colour used somewhere, maybe black or the classic grey).
ahh so you started linking and posting info of stuff in vids huh? i just came from gba bcklight mod vid. thats good, we need to know some of that stuff... if not in the vid, explain in info box.
A few weeks ago, i was unsuccessful at peeling off the reflective film, due to stupid ribbon cable coming apart. I quickly managed to destroy a perfectly fine Game Boy Pocket. So i decided to try it again....bought another Pocket. Backlight was successful. Then i made the mistake of not fully watching this, to see how ridiculous the Bi-Vert part would be. Well...after about 2 hrs, i successfully tacked down, and soldered everything in to place...turn on...crap...crappity crap crap. Screen was bunky...all full of lines, and electric static. So, once again...i said ok...screw this...Salvaged any parts i could, and then threw the rest away...And once again...destroyed a perfectly fine Game Boy Pocket. But i forgot, i could just re-solder the part of the board i had to cut, in order to put the bi-vert in. That would atleast give me a Game Boy Pocket, with a backlight.....but it was too late. My temper flared, and everything went into the garbage. Lesson is...stick with DMG-01 mods...cause Game Boy Pocket sucks. I HATE CURSIVE AND I HATE ALL OF YOU...IM NEVER COMING BACK TO SCHOOL, NEVER!
not. really? i used a handy pak in GBC's heyday to deal with lighting problems. the mod is marvelous, but im not much for nostalgia, i kinda lived that stage of my life to the fullest
Thank you for providing these tutorials! I just modded my GBP with both the backlight and bivert. Now I'm look at other mods and I ran across the GBAmp (store.kitsch-bent.com/product/gbamp). Is this something you'd consider trying and doing another tutorial video on? I can't find any other videos on it.
Let me dumb it down for you, on my 2nd comment I made it clear that was talking to the other guy I think his name was Travii, then you snap back by calling me a moron. That was uncalled for. I didn't mean to anger you. I can tell you are having a bad day so I'll back off.
Sorry, but tons of British words are spelled far different than they sound. Go ahead and look at 50% of your counties and come back and tell me they're pronounced as they read. And by the way: far more English speakers in America ;)
28 guage = 0.35mm cubed in metric measurements* for those who don't live in Myanmar, Liberia or America.
The way you clearly speak and sound while explaining things is nothing short of amazing, keep up the good work!
Keep up the good work Colin, these videos are great. I'm surprised you don't have more subscribers
he is knowledgeable and professional! he definitely deserves more subscribers!

Whoa....came to watch this video from your backlight install and the subs changed from 52k to 53k. Congrats.
you have great taste in music...that jazz hip hop beat is nice

Shout out for 3M VHB, the best adhesive ever!
+mykie242 Yeah, this stuff is no joke!
could you use a loca type glue to glue the backlight to the lcd?
You probably don't need to glue it. I didn't
But then again I did it with my DMG not a pocket :P
mykie242 nv
yes!!! this is amazing I'm so glad you did a pocket version! lol perfect timing because my bivert and back light come in tomorrow!
when cutting the pins, what am I actually cutting?
+Rob Smith You're actually cutting the traces on the circuit board that go between the CPU and the pins. The traces are pretty thin, so just a couple of passes with the knife are all that's necessary. To be sure, you can check continuity using a multimeter.
Do you think you'll ever do an updated video with the gameboy pocket inverter chip? Kisch-Bent sells one!
Nice video ! But i suggest using the other solder point for the backlight on the pocket. You screen will do some flickering with some games like pokemon if you don't change that, because the backlight take power at the same resistor that the screen at thoses solder points. +Cyriaque interesting, I did see you comment on these problems in the backlight video. Which solder point did you use to solve the flickering?
+ViewtifulSam Hey, i use thoses solder point : a.disquscdn.com/uploads/mediaembed/images/3216/7720/original.jpg
Thanks to Hand Held Legend for the fast respond, it's a little tricky to instal but it worth the result.
+Cyriaque cool, thanks for the response. I'm glad you were able to solve the flickering. I'll keep this alternative in mind when installing the backlight on my GBP.
Love the videos, great quality shooting and edit!
The 28awg wire I got from Amazon must be thicker than the 28awg wire you used because mine barely fits
Love this mod, should do a rechargeable mod as thats easy peasy and nobody ever does a tutorial
Glad I watched this before buying the backlight kit for my pocket. I really don’t see any difference between the two other than the bivert mod gives the screen a blue tint.
Muy bueno, ahora estoy esperando que me llegue el chip de Bivert y la retroiluminación de una vez por todas :3

So I successfully got the backlight mod to work last night and when I turned it on this morning it doesn't work anymore
What about a 5v converter? How necessary it when biverting and back lighting?
thanks for these tutorials, much appreciated, keep them up!
Why do i have vertical lines in the background when i play games? Vey faint lines and also on the character when he moves. Wario for instance.
Thanks Colin, great tutorial as always.
Hi Colin, do you think it'd be possible to repair the contacts of a Nintendo cart (GB/C for example) using either replacement contacts or solder? I've been told the latter should help and if that is the case, would you be willing to make a video about it?
+PandaXclone2 i may not be colin, but you might be able to with a replacement circuit board ,
Coleman Prevatt I don't think that solves the problem. I'm looking to repair a section of the circuit board in a cartridge that connects to the system and allows it to recognise the game. Replacing it defeats the purpose of repair.
this is great but why at the end looks BLUE! it would be great see on pure BLACK AND WHITE! it is possible on black/white?
Hey colin, what if the ribbon cable of the GBP screen was tear down? Is it possible to soldering again??
Hey Colin, great work on the videos! I have the installed the backlight for the gb pocket using your other tutorial video with great results. I was attempting to wire up the biverter but I'm having trouble getting solder to stick to the pads. Do you have any tips you could share here?
Love your videos Colin. Have you tried the Kitsch-Bent GB Pocket bivert chip?
Matt Dahl good looks brobro! Looks way easier than all this wiring, more like the DMG bivert
Apperantly I am not all that great at modding small electronics, as I managed to accidentally cut more traces between the cpu and the connector for the ribbon cable... Thanks, that is good insight. I honestly wonder if the bare chip would be easier to install in the Pocket.
hope you hit 100k subs soon
Again, great high quality video!
Would it be safer, to lay some Kaplan tape around the solder points? Just in case.
Sure, it certainly can't hurt.
Awesome videos Colin!
Can you use 30 awg wire? I installed with 28 but it's causing pressure on the lcd when tightened up and causes bright spots.
+David Balzer Yeah, you should be able to get away with that, the total current draw is quite low.
+This Does Not Compute Finished up rewiring and it definitely fits really well with room to spare, I would recommend it for easier routing and tucking neatly. Thanks for the awesome how-to's!
I can't get the wires to stick to those tiny ports on the back. Even with flux. How did you get your wires to stick to those tiny circuits?
would it be easier to use just the chip insted of the entire board since the board isn't as much of a short cut as it is in the dmg and without the full board it would maybe be easier to put closer to the source so you dont need to mess with so much wire
+Sillyzombie666 You certainly could use just the chip, but the legs on them are very small and a bit harder to solder wires to.

Yeah will this fix a black dot dead pixel called screen cancer on gameboy pocket
Colin you beautiful man, I've been waiting a while for this.
Cool! We both live in Minnesota! Do you know where I can an AGS-101 in Minnesota for fairly cheap?
+44sonic10 Get lucky at a Pawn Shop/Thrift Store? That's what I did to get one for $28.

That bivert module was meant to be soldered directly to two lifted pins on the LCD connector. This could have been much less messy.

There is a newer version of the mod chip to make this process alot easier
Hmm. Honestly, I'm pretty disappointed by the result. For me, personally, it's not worth the effort.
Thank you so much for your awesome videos. You can see how much work goes into them.
Does this mod make the speaker more "bassy"?
No, it's just stuck to the speaker for room purpose. The GB Pocket is really tight. Basically, what the Bivert does is reducing motion blur and enhancing contrast.
Is it possible to run color games with this mod?
Just made this mod for my GBPocket. Here few additions:

I'm almost tempted to buy an old DMG and stick a backlight + biverter in it now (I still have my childhood GB lying around but A) It's a transparent one and B) sentimental value (got it when I was 6), so I'd just buy some less rare colour used somewhere, maybe black or the classic grey).
+Redhotsmasher Used DMGs are pretty inexpensive, usually around $30, so if yours has sentimental value then picking up another one is the way to go.
How much does this mod affect the batterylife?
would using Loca glue have any benefits here?
Nope.
Yep
You are a BadAss love your work
ahh so you started linking and posting info of stuff in vids huh? i just came from gba bcklight mod vid.
thats good, we need to know some of that stuff... if not in the vid, explain in info box.
why did not you buy a gameboy light from japan instead?
price
"Things just look clearer" yet I can hardly tell the differences between shades of blue. No bivert is way better IMO.
Pocket? omg that thing is huuuge... :0
You should see the original. It's about an inch thick and takes 4 AA batteries.
btw: how is the battery life with this mod? Much worse?
I haven't noticed a huge impact on battery life, actually -- neither the chip nor the LEDs in the backlight draw much power.
I actually had a question about the expected battery life.
it doesn’t work, please help
I HATE CURSIVE AND I HATE ALL OF YOU...IM NEVER COMING BACK TO SCHOOL, NEVER!
any news on ps vita
If you close your eyes, he sounds exactly like Hal Emmerich.
Bowen Staines Not even close.
Maximum Carnage not saying it to be rude, man.
Bowen Staines I know. He would be a decent actor for the role though.
not. really? i used a handy pak in GBC's heyday to deal with lighting problems. the mod is marvelous, but im not much for nostalgia, i kinda lived that stage of my life to the fullest
You look incredibly like Jeff Kaplan
No I don't.
Could I pay you to do this bivert mod for me?
Thank you for providing these tutorials! I just modded my GBP with both the backlight and bivert. Now I'm look at other mods and I ran across the GBAmp (store.kitsch-bent.com/product/gbamp). Is this something you'd consider trying and doing another tutorial video on? I can't find any other videos on it.
Awesome! 👍
Are you left handed?
For some things, but not all.
This Does Not Compute Alright
This Does Not Compute Could I please buy a modded pocket from you? I don't have the time, skills or patience unfortunately. please let me know.
He also needs a big fat greasy burger or a bag of them.
Dumbass
German Menjivar Maybe but i'm not lying. =)
Useless. The VCC point on the backplate is not a solder point. Impossible to get the wire to stick.
you are best
I also think biverting the pocket is pointless
Solder? I barely know 'er!!
I wonde rwhat nintendo thinks of us modding our concoles...
Considering how old these gameboys are, I really don't think they could care less...
'Just use a Game Boy Player
Sarder?!

Final_Enigma_7 Bruh y u tripin?! Are you serious? Speak properly you moron.
Let me dumb it down for you, on my 2nd comment I made it clear that was talking to the other guy I think his name was Travii, then you snap back by calling me a moron. That was uncalled for. I didn't mean to anger you. I can tell you are having a bad day so I'll back off.

I know, they've butchered the English language.
Sorry, but tons of British words are spelled far different than they sound. Go ahead and look at 50% of your counties and come back and tell me they're pronounced as they read.
And by the way: far more English speakers in America ;)
Its pronounced sodder in all the countries that put men on the moon.
It's our language now...
