It's difficult for a non-player to understand just how much skill is exercised in this video. It's absolutely mind-boggling how talented this player is. Years of incredibly hard work and dedication.
yeah right, every bit of sound seems placed for a very specific reason... I've tried once to blow in one of these flutes that one friend introduced to me, I tried for at least one hour to make even one note, I couldn't XD it's a very specific technique... can't imagine how much work this man put into his music

Took me about a month to figure out to make a noise, then a couple others to control my breathing. The mind and body stuff is pretty real in playing the shakuhachi.
Sounds like a typical Japanese person. And i mean that in a positive way they work VERY HARD in whatever craft they put their mind and willpower behind! And they STICK to it! For life!
尺八の音色は 懐かしい故郷の思い出を調べにしたような音ですね。この素朴な音に魅せられてきます。三味線も味噌汁のような美味しい香りと味になんとも言えない音の響きがあります。どちらも日本の奥ゆかしい豊かな味があり 静かに畳に座り演奏楽しみことが醍醐味になります。私は庭の木に目をやりかすかな木立の揺れと演奏の妙味が爽やかになりました。この素晴らしい日本の音楽は至上の喜びに満ちています

The flute Mr. Fukuda is playing is a 1.8 shakuhachi, pitch of D with all holes closed. The first piece he plays is Shika no Tone (Distant Cry of Deer), a traditional Zen piece from the Kinko school. This piece is often played by two shakuhachi placed far apart on the stage, or even different parts of the hall, to emulate the sound of deer in the forest. The second piece (after the excellent Jiuta piece by his wife) is a modern piece written for shakuhachi in 1996 by Kaneta. Excellent video...

ＳＹＡＫＵＨＡＴＩ これは楽器と言うよりは、
拡張された口笛だ。気持ちをこれだけストレートに最短距離の直球で表現する道具は、他に見当たらない。これはやっぱり精神世界の道具だ。楽器とは性質が根本的に違うようだ。演奏にしても歌にしても太鼓にしても単音の響きや余韻の美学を追求するところが、凄く素敵だ。

尺八の音色は極上の調べに乗って静寂な動きの世界に引き込まれるような雰囲気が素敵です。聞く方も目を閉じ静かに心を落ち着かせると格物な思いに満足感に満たさせる。技の世界は奥深く近寄りがたい新鮮な領域です。いわゆる演奏者と一体になっている気分がなんとも言えない魅力があります。この演奏者の先生は極上の尺八の使い手の人ですね。尺八の音色を最大限に生かし心にくい音色に挑戦しているようです。三味線の方も上級の腕前、素晴らしい演奏です。二つの楽器が織りなす音の世界、これこそ日本文化の最高峰の出来栄えが聞く人に満足感を与える。エレキのように華々しさはないが美しい静寂さがかい間見え、素晴らしい演奏に満喫することができる。素敵な世界ですね。どこの国にも国民に慕われる音楽はあり演奏者は伝統を大事に守り、見事な技量に親しみを覚え賞賛されています。伝統の音楽は素敵な思いがありみんなを納得される要素を持っているでしょう。このことは他国の人にも共感がありよいものはよいという概念があります。私達も時には日本の美に親しみ、聞く機会を広げ楽しむことがこれらの新しい発展にいくらか寄与してくるでしょう。心の余裕を作りましょう。

日本人に生まれてよかった。とは言うものの江戸時代のニューミュージックなんだろうか・・。極めた音や精神性は時代を超えてすばらしい。さらに古いと思われる能や雅楽もいいけど、江戸芸術はさすが凄い！音楽以外に絵画なんかも・・奥が深い。

Sure, this is proper Japanese Shahukachi music played by a Maestro of his craft. Good technically. Both the sound quality and the cinephotography are masterful. What more can one say? Simply OUT OF THIS WORLD. The longer one listens to it, the more masterly does the music sound. The singer is equally good. Both give perfect renditions of the music. FLAWLESS PERFORMANCES INDEED! This is a proper suite with the Shakuhachi player playing the 3rd movement. This indeed is music of the highest order.

Je retrouve ici avec bonheur la mélodie simple et âpre de ce shakuhachi qui m'avait fait tant de bien dans ma jeunesse (années 80!). Son âpreté-même est tellement méditative! Tout superflu s'éloigne, elle va droit à l'essentiel, sans fioritures. Elle ne me quittera plus! Merci infiniment. de l'avoir postée. Le chant également, que je découvre, est pure beauté. Peut-il y avoir pure beauté ou état méditatif sans une certaine âpreté, une vraie simplicité?

“I have finally reached an age (experience) that I can understand the world of this sound,” I feel recently.
when i hear this sound i release why ive given my life to aikido, when i step off the path, and get caught with the meanless things in life, why dont have a bigger house, why I dont have more money etc, etc I just listen to this and I am glad I have chosen this simple humble life and can wait to get back training. Also why he asks lungs of steel, its that his mind and body are one, he has a purpose, his doing what he wants! and enjoying the greatest gift we have our body!
I love that a culture that presents itself as reserved and stoic and equanimity has such powerful and passionate music. It's as if the Japanese people hold so much emotion within themselves that they can only express it through intense arts. Thank you!

Personally, l think 尺八 is much much much more touching than many instruments such as piano, harmonica, or guitar, etc. Actually, 尺八, the Chinese ancestors played it only for the internal themselves, not for pleasuring other people。Many western music instruments are played more for the audience, for the show, not for themselves. Now, young boys, they play guitar 80% just for show, for cool, for girls' eyes, not for the true love of music 😂. Don't forget our east old 尺八~~.Japanese ancestors also have high level and deep realm on 尺八 . I like 尺八 very much ❤️～。千年风雅 ～。天地 ～。空～。静～。灵～。清～。人 ～。和 ～。

Sensei Teruhisa Fukuda is one of the great "Grand master" of shakuhachi.
And he is a great teacher and human...i' ve studied in a stage with him this sommer...it was wonderfull moments ...and he has also a very large" open mind"...able to improvise on jazz moment (i'm jazz musician who study shakuhachi), using sometime breathing in continu ...and love good wine as frenchie as me!
