Unfortunately, progress has been painstakingly slow as for some reason dental anaesthetics don't seem to have any effect on her... According to her recent tweets she had some major work done just this afternoon. (April 10th, JST) Here's wishing her all the best and for a speedy recovery.

Ah yes, I remembered when I went to a back alley dentist. I needed a tooth extracted since it was severely decayed. Doctor was on his lunch break and watching Tv when he did the procedure. He swiftly stabbed my jaw with the anesthetic, came back after a commercial break and yanked out the tooth with the forceps in about 5 seconds. It felt like I was punched in the jaw but it was surprisingly pleasant. That’s when I learned that not only was I a sadist but also a masochist.

I had the ultrasonic scraper and some kind of water polish thing for years, but my new dentist apparently prefers the "good old fashioned" tools, so it feels like he's literally hooking the scraper behind the plaque and breaking it off as if opening a door with a crowbar. I literally had plaque fly into my eyes from the force, and I was spitting blood for minutes afterwards.
Maybe I'll ask my dentist about this next time I go, because he and his colleagues all use both the manual and ultrasonic scrapers to remove plaque. Probably both individual preference and context-dependent.
I didn't know that dentists blindfold their patients in other countries. In my country we just look away. Even sometimes they give us a small mirror so we can see everything
I think it differs for the particular clinic, and what they specialize in. If it's just cleaning it may not be necessary but doesn't hurt. But if they are drilling or extracting teeth, eye protection for the patient is necessary.

in addition to being a great storyteller, shes a great illustrator as well sure her drawings might not look the best, or better than any working illustrator out there, but they easily and clearly show whats going on, and i think in essence thats what illustrations should be
When I got my wisdom teeth taken out, they numbed my gums by giving my gums a shot in the four seperate places. My god it hurt. I could feel the bones connecting my teeth breaking and ripping as they yanked my teeth out with pliers.....

That's so crazy. The whole process is completely different in the UK. The the bit where they x-ray you, they just take 3 pictures, one for the left, the middle and right sets of teeth, then you get to see everything through a black and white photo. And for the light, they give you shades (they are like sunglasses). I don't know if I was lucky, but I actually had the possibility of been seen that very same day. Even though I am in the capital. But I chose the next day's morning. Crazy that they blindfold you, because of the light. But maybe because they have such cute staff, they would feel a strong gaze through the glasses so it's more comfortable to have the patients blindfolded.

Here in Brazil x-rays are paid and done separetely. For a panorama you need the dentist to make something like a prescription and you have to take that to a specialized stabilishement, and then return to the dentist later with the result. It's really a pain in the ass. And expensive. Smaller local x-rays are much easier and cheaper, but it's still a pain in the ass.
Japanese dentistry seems so different compare to my local one. Really weird that they blindfold patients because of the light, like they don't have those yellow colored "sun glasses"...

When I get x-rays of mine I just lay on the dentist chair and bite on a plastic thing. Then they put a tube thing up to my mouth and take a picture of whatever. Repeat for the other side. Maybe it's not outdated but just different or whatever but it seems very unnecessary? It sounds weirdly more high tech but I don't see the point of it. Any dentists or such who have any knowledge about it?

El Escolta i live in the US and they do x rays but they do it while you’re laying down and have you bite down on something while wearing a heavy apron

Yurgen Grimwood I’m not a dentist but i think that spinning around thing allows them to get x rays from all angles.
The spinning X-ray is normally done years apart while the sit in a chair and bite X-ray is more frequent.
