Sorting out a worn headstock on a JCB 526-56. Part 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- A JCB 526-56 has come in for some much needed tlc on the front end.
Because of all the wear in all the joints and pins joining the tilt ram to the headstock it results in a lot of slack back and forth which was causing an issue with the specific job it gets used for.
I took the headstock off to also find the bush had worn the hole and was a lose fit.
The first pin hole was line bored, bore welded up and then line bored back out to size, then the same as done with the bottom hole to allow a new bush to fit tightly.
Hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching.
Kurtis Fridays, Baz Saturdays and Oliver Sundays - bloody brilliant!!
who is baz?

That's my engineering entertainment sorted for a Sunday 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧
Bloody hell that went quick!
S Power should be paying you to demo their machine's versatility. Great to see you have such quality equipment.
S Power gave/loaned it to him. Greg from On Fire Welding got one as well.
Initially I was thinking that’s quite a new machine to be that worn, particularly as it looks well greased. Then I realised that it’s 15 years old so maybe it’s done ok. Thank you for the continued entertainment Oliver, definitely brightens up any dreary Sunday morning ☺️
I'm glad you got the S power. But the homemade boring machine was very ingenious and served you well. It's nice to see you have something that isn't totally destroyed to begin with, with a deadline of it. I need it tomorrow after I haven't greased it for years 😂😂. You do great work, Oliver. Can't wait for next Sunday morning.
The S power looks like it's doing a good job and earning it's money. Thanks for taking us on this weeks work project. Another quality job from you. Brian from South Yorkshire.
Murphy's law: What you need is always in the bottom box.
The bore welding sounded like frying a steak in a thunderstorm.
Coffee and Snowball Engineering, good start to Sunday.
Nice to see you briefly at Emley last Saturday Ollie.
500 subscriber off 50k. Enjoyed watching your quality work get you ever growing subscribers from way back. And admire your humility about your abilities and skills. This week, no rust. Yippee
Dad was impressed. He knows his son can fix everything around the farm. Great for a family run concern. My Dad just reckoned I was a waste of space. So you are doing well young man.
That machine will pay for itself in the first few jobs. Hope it holds up good.
Seems your dad would be vying with mine for who is the greatest tw@ 😔😔😔
Some great videography around 32:00 most creative views. It’s very interesting to hear how you talk us through the issues and how you plan to resolve them. Much success going forward
Agreed, the commentary is excellent!
Another great video for an early Monday am here in NZ❤. Tip for spraying yellows, reds and some blues is to put a base of white primer on first to get better coverage. The pigments in yellows etc have to be super finely ground up to get good coverage, which would make them too expensive.
Great work mate, a pleasure to watch
Love the invention of the vicegrip with the dial indicator, great thinking
was looking at it myself , one thing he could add is some sort of fine tread nut welded to the clamp fitted with a screw across from the dailcaliper to push on the cutter from the bottom to move it in or out once he loosened the setscrew , would make adjusting it eazier and maibe even repeatable if he has to move the cutter back and forth across multiple holes
All those linkages combined made for a very loosey goosey.
Morning, Oliver. It's getting sorted! Looking forward to the next part. Cheers.
Another great job Ollie! That S Power is a great tool extremely quiet and the bore machining and welding is top notch
Nice bit of kit that Ollie gonna save you a truck load of setup time. 👊
Cheers Ollie, looking forward to part two 👍
That S Power works really well Oliver. May take a bit getting used to it but from what you have shown, works great. A bit more setup time than the others but works very well. You seem to know how to set this thing up well. Very nice video. Thanks so much.
Cheers!
On your way to another great job/video! Young lad! Thanks for sharing! 👌👍
Sunday mornings with Ollie. Love it
Thanks for another great video, it's nice to learn with you as you are going along, your commentary is really good for this.
Big fan from the USA and I am so jealous you get the black packouts lol, keep up the amazing work!
Yes we only get the black ones in the UK. I want the red ones!!!!!
I don't know what it is about line boring that I find so fascinating but I could watch it for hours
What a cracking bit of kit that line borer is !!
Welderfaber doing a flyby to check on you 😂 Great work as always !!
What do you mean?
@@snowballengineeringI think they were jokingly referring to another UA-camr “Welderfabber” flying overhead in the helicopter. Another great video always look forward to your content. Well done indeed. Michael Leicester
Again ditto to all the great comments you rightfully deserve Oliver. Again I say great job, great video.. Again I'm always looking forward to your next video project.
Its amazing how quiet that S Power machine is. I think JCB sells those parts with loose pin holes so they can sell more parts.
Wow that Ys kit has a lot of bits and pieces, good you got a storage container so it can be all kept together! That is a crazy complicated joint system that is destined to end up just like it did , worn out ! Nice you can repair it for the owner.
Great video mate. When painting can i suggest using a rolled up tube of paper inserted into your nice new bores to protect the faces from over spray?
Olly: I think you mentioned the customer was using a 2" tow ball mounted on the headstock to move cabins around, if that's all he uses the JCB for, then consider offering the customer a future option, to replace the headstock with a simpler head that uses just the two pins on the mast fitted with a tow ball on the. That way he'd have more control and a lot less moving parts to maintain, and if he ever want to swap back to a standard JCB headstock he could just swap the headstock back. PS Love your work :)
If he’s moving cabins then I am cure he will use pallet forks and a bucket from time to time on the site don’t you think.
@@johnwarwick4105 Possible for sure, but we don't know at this stage, maybe a quick change option to switch?
@@paulhammond7489there no point the machine done 8 and half thousands hours and a doubt the current owners had it from new regular greasing and it’ll probably do another 10k hours trouble free cause moving caravans ain’t gonna be hard on it
Every time I look for something, it's always in the last place I look! So now I look in the last place first! And I still can't find the damn thing!! So I buy it again. Sometimes, the looking isn't worth the effort.
That's definitely a big job, in more ways than one. It's a big machine with a lot of worn parts to fix. Pretty incredible the amount of movement with each pin adding to the overall amount. It would definitely be difficult trying to move a caravan with that much movement.
I bet your Mum made jellies to the nearest thou when you were a lad.! Excellent content there. Thanks for posting.
Nice progress on this job!
Great video of you getting to grips with the S Power.
Would be worth them sending someone out to give you a bit of training on the S Power control box. They are basically getting free advertising from you so would be a good investment for them.
That a shocking amount of slop on them brand new components, but JCB aren't exactly known for their quality these days are they.
May I suggest that you get a roll around table? 2x4 feet to use to put your work tools and bits and pieces on. Thereby not working on the floor and easily moving things around 👍
That s power bit of kit is a great bit of kit your doing well for yourself keep up the good work
Such an excellent video.
Thanks for sharing Oliver.
👏👏👏👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Oliver ive seen when welding smaller bores some people cut the end of the shroud at a slight angle to allow a steeper angle for the tip 👍
Olá amigo trabalho sempre muito interessante!!!Aguardo pela continuação!!!
Boa sorte sempre!!!
The S power sure looks a handy bit of kit
Well done Oliver great work and video !!! good as Kurtis and Karen of CEE Austria but you are missing a “Homeless the dog”😅
Thank God.
Probably good that you don’t work for JCB in the quality control department. Their production costs would go up because of increased quality and then they wouldn’t sell as many replacements
Nice work as always! :-) When the welding tip cannot be tilted enough, it helps putting a "starting" ring at the beginning of the hole. Maybe 10mm thick.
That's a whole lot of wiggle, many regards from NE rural Ohio, USA 🇺🇸.
Great job and video as always.
That bore welder is magic!
Phil
Another p'fect job Oliver, bet part 2 is just as good
Great job I was as disappointed as you with the tolerance of the new parts I would be tempted to send them back.
I do like the new line borer/welder.
🚜👏🤞👍🙏
"JCB Yellow", 50 Shades of Yellow 😂
It's probably a good thing that some of your customers are not good at maintenance. Cause that will help keep you busy and making money. I see that you have almost met it to 50000 subscribers. That's cool, 100,000 shouldn't take long. Yeah🎉
Spah ohn again, Ollie! Better than new
How much slack?
Yes!
C&C Equipments have gotten a Mauco line borer with a smaller diameter welding attachment with different pistol bends. You should see if you can use it on your S Power unit
Great Job, well done; ....... but oh dear Oli', all these expensive new toys, ..... and still haven't treated your poor old eyes to new Welding mask lenses. Your eyes are what made it possible for you to do all of these orders/task's. Speaking as a retired 'Coded Welder' with Cataracts, .... HELP and PROTECT them!!! 🤔 👍
Black and red Milwaukee boxes? That's a first for me.
With how tight you bored those, I'd say it will be another 87k hours before you have to do that again. Nice work.
If you use white paint first the yellow will cover better and look much nicer also
Nice, always wanted a line borer. Oliver you could put the Vernier on the tool and bar as the bar is a known dimension plus the amount sticking out of the tip tool. It will put you in the ball park.
Another 2 part belter to look forward too👍🏻
about 16:50: I got an idea for a shop made tool: a mobile mounting table with shelves. So you don't have to assemble things on the floor (my credo: do not labour needlessly) 😄
As he gets older he won't do without it!
Looking forward to part two when you post it.
Yellow paint needs a white primer under it to get decent coverage.
Nice vid sor.. Good work on the jcb to.. that line borer does the job... stay safe 🏴
Watching u do what u do is like watching Mike Tyson box in is day amazing😃👍
great work again as always Oliver
That pack out is good gear. It's waterproof but be careful if you open lid on bottom trolley box and it's got water on top because it pisses into the box.
great show. thanks for your time. see you next week.
Nice organization for your line boring kit
Nice job! Looks like you could do with some more trollies to work your kit from ... Save your knees and back
paulwithers9194. Very good advice, Oliver will eventually get around to your suggestion as he gets older and joints start aching and losing their flexibility .
One thing I did notice is you never want to reach your finger into a socket on an impact gun to get a nut out. My uncle did that once and his finger accidentally hit the trigger and he screwed a 3/4” nut onto it. They had to use a wrench to unscrew it off his finger and he had thread imprints on it for almost a year. 😂
I’ve seen photos of this 🤢 i always make sure i haven’t clicked it over to tighten first
@@snowballengineering good. Wouldn’t want you to have to miss a video because your nuts are screwed to your finger. 😂
Watching Olley on a Sunday is like having my Roast, puts me in a good mood for the week. Are we going to see your home made boring machine in action or is it like some of my older tools, stuck at the back of a shelf? 👍
Yes. I still use it depending on the job. Sometimes the one I made is more suitable
Yay another Oliver instalment.
It looks like some up&down movement of the hydraulic ram here 2:50 . You didn't mention the upper hole of the ram. Great work as always. Like your video editing. Admire your work from home situation. Greetings from Germany.
you could make a cart on wheels for control box of s power so you can move it easily and not leave it on the floor
That's a great looking job 👌 well done so far
Good stuff...good as new
Man that line boring machine is so quiet!
I wonder if that flat spot on the driver head is for a grease zerk drill point so you can pump a shot of grease in the screw for lubrication
Great job...excellent content!
Keep em coming!!!!
Nice!!! better than new..!!
Oliver, I’m wondering if you’ve considered building a service truck and going to some of your customers?
I’m not keen on onsite work. Prefer to be in my workshop where I have everything I need
You should make an updated workshop tour
Hi Ollie, great vid as usual, just wondering if that headstock was greased on a regular basis or just after it got slack? Anywho! I am right in thinking that all men "HAVE " to watch a passing helicopter until it's out of sight!!!!😅
I think it’s probably had a harder life in its previous job.
@snowballengineering I'm thinking you're right. Even at 8K plus hours I'm thinking that may not be the best use of that JCB. Great job fixing it!
I do enjoy your videos. Maybe you should invest in some letter/number punches as back in the 1970/80s I used letter/number/centre punches to mark and make sure I re-assembled Royal Mail sorting machines correctly after one massive screw up which meant another 90 minutes to take apart and put back together correctly. Never made that mistake again. ;-)
Grease is cost effective.metal can be very dear.
Being able to get those new links made the job not so big and a lot easier, but the tolerance on them was not what you would expect, way too loose.
Good work, entertaing and informative video as always.
With those wish bones that you brought two new ones for, with regards to the old ones could you have boarded them out and fitted them with 6 new bush’s.??? I brought a brand new digger and it had more play in the bush’s than my old one with 10,000hrs on it. The new bush’s they sent to replace them were worse than the ones in it.
Would you not make your own pins and bushings
Doing a great job there 👍👍👍👍👍
My Sunday is complete!
Getting a bit posh with the JCB yellow not the trusty red oxide! Very interesting to see the bore welding Thanks
Oliver! Thanks for the interesting video. Great job. It's nice that the number of subscribers is growing. There are now many more than WELDERFABBER, although there is a whole team working there.
the end section of the bore welder tube should have the plastic bush in or it cuts the cable sheath also change the motor mounting bolts to studs it makes it a lot easier to mount try an get a ceramic spatter spray for the nozzle
That's a pretty complicated setup with the line boring machine. Just as well that you're a skilled operator and know how to use it.
You sure get a good workout with some of the jobs that come in. But you should swap arms when using that hollow jack, otherwise you'll end up with one arm bigger than the other!
No chatter either. Nice!
How long do the cutters last on a job like this. I’ve done lathe work but never a line boring job. I enjoy your videos.
They last a while if you treat them right. But also depends on what you’re cutting through
You know that it’s easier to just watch user video’s or read manufacturers manuals makes everything simpler 😂😂😂😂
Time to get nitrogen to freeze the bushes for easy installation? 😊
Unfortunately I don’t have access to nitrogen
