    I'm being educated and trained by the readers of my parish in the art and duty of being a reader. One of them is quite old and sick, and he keeps teasing I'm to replace him, but I feel unworthy of filling his huge shoes. Please pray for me!

    Good explanation of the post of a reader, the history is long and complicated (a study of the early history of Minor Orders is being written, probably two or three years before publication).
    Readers read everything in the Early Church (including the Gospel) as not all the senior clergy were literate, they also looked after the books and performed any task requiring literacy in the Church as the bishop asked them

    You make me want to be a reader, thank you for telling us about this! I am considering going to an Orthodox seminary for theology or history or something if I don't become clergy, I don't know at all, I just know so far American/western colleges just make me sick now.

    I’m sure I’m not the only catholic that has horror stories on the Mass reader. From my own experience in San Francisco, Sacramento and the mom’s church in Newport Beach, the readers are generally 75% women or girl teens (to balance out the church’s sexiest’s position that only men can be priests). The position is used less as part of the mass and more as showing diversity with the reader as blind, disabled, very young or teen or very elderly or person of color. The readers are amazingly awful as if picked up the book last minute, stumbling over the words, mispronunciations, poor reading skills. Or, the reader reads very slowly thinking slow is devout (but losing continuity). Or, the reader is overly dramatic as if in a performance. At worse, the reader is flippant and sarcastic in the reading because text violates one’s space....oh the trials of being Catholic.

    • @richardjohnson5588
      @richardjohnson5588 3 роки тому

      Hey chief
      Not the man, plus its been a year but here's my five cents
      The intercessory prayer to the Mother of Our God differs in kind from say asking your mom to pray for you, or asking your departed grandma to pray for you (as since Christ destroyed death and not a single soul remains in the grave, she is very much alive, just not in body), or asking a saint to pray for you (same as grandma but you're hoping for a bit more pull and assurance, on account of a saint being by definition someone we're certain made it to the throne of God).
      This difference of a kind comes from the custom of the kings of Judah, of whom the Christ Jesus is the fulfillment and chief, to place their mothers at their right hand as their prime advisor and aid. She has His ear as the Queen-Mother of all creation, hence we hymn her as the highest of all creatures (more honorable than the cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim etc). Basically, she's the prime minister in that monarchy.
      Secondly, she is His mom. If she can have mercy on us, his crucifiers, we can be sure we are forgiven. God suffers injustices unto himself, but He will right the wrongs done to his servants - of mortal souls no-one has a better case to condemn us than her.
      Thirdly there is a ton of theological implications of her being pregnant with and giving birth to God, as Paradise/Heaven is defined simply as the presence of God's dwelling. Garden of Eden, the burning bush and the ground around it that Moses must go barefoot on, mount Sinai, the tabernacle, the temple, even the heart of a man immersed in earnest prayer - are heaven by the presence of God. And so was she, and on go the treatises that I'm not smart enough to read.
      Fourth point is similar with its theological implications that are too smart for me, but this time it's about the Word of God taking on flesh and human nature from her and by her means. The humanity of Christ the God-man is due to her and that's also important enough to write books about. I don't get it so I just pray.

    I wish the order of reader still existed in the Catholic Church. It used to, as one of the minor orders leading up to the priesthood, though I believe there were also permanent readers. But now, the readings at mass, aside from the Gospel, are very casual & informal.
    While there are some designated readers (I think they call them lectors now), they're not tonsured to my knowledge & basically anyone (including women, which was never the case before) can read the readings at any time. I've even been conscripted shortly before mass begins to do a reading on occasion. I would like to be an "ordained" reader, if that still existed, to have that more official, formal role I could offer to the Church. I think it's about the only clerical order I could manage. But, alas...
    Edit: Though, come to think of it, I think I'd have to take a vow of chastity... 😅

    Interesting that you as a Reader read old testament aka Tanakh JEWISH SCRIPTURE as well I would be intrested in what specific old testament readings those are. Jonah is an amazing book that Jews read evry YOM KIPPUR day of atonement for 2 reasons a The story of Jonah teaches us how no one is beyond the reach of G‑d's hand. Just as Jonah's endeavor to escape G‑d's providence was unsuccessful, so, too, we are incapable of eluding divine justice for transgressions we may have committed.
    b) On a more uplifting note: G‑d spared the people of Nineveh although He had already decreed that they would be destroyed because of their evil ways. This teaches us that no matter our past behavior, G‑d's benevolence, and mercy awaits us if we only repent full-heartedly.
    Interesting that the post of the reader was originally for those that were illiterate as the Job of Jewish Chazon or Cantor was to do a repittiton of the main 3 times a day prayer and the congreagation reponds Amen, and Blessed be his Blessed name. 15 old testament readings for pascha wow. That was amazing you read 200 pages of the Tanakh old-testament straight that's amazing.

      Readers and singers may marry under canon law, so may Subdeacon if they are engaged before they are elevated to the position. There were serious arguments over this in the Church Councils.

      seronymus I don’t know if Jewish prayers would be of much comfort to you, but I can give you some advice. First, take a deep breath, I would suggest a method called square breathing: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, repeat. Also try grounding yourself in the physical world, that’s one of the best ways to remind yourself that your paranoia is just in your head. Since your (presumably) an Orthodox Christian try grounding with an icon. Look at an icon and describe who is it of. What is their story? What are they wearing? What’s the purpose of their iconography? How does the icon feel in your hands? Etc. You can also do this with anything in your environment, even yourself (focusing on the feeling of your feet on the floor is very popular). I hope that helps and I’ll still pray for you if you want.

    • @seronymus
      @seronymus 5 років тому +1

      @Dylan Chouinard You are a jew? I'm honestly flattered, thank you for your advice and I will do that, any prayers are helpful but I'm just mystified right now. If you don't mind me asking, well I'm not sure precisely how to word this but I ask innocently - what brought you here? And, why don't you hate Christians especially Orthodox given the history of your ancestors? And please excuse me a thousand times for this question too, but it has been driving me mad and all I desire is real feedback - what do you think about your people having been so involved in movements like communist revolutions and today being.... I'm sure you already know the conspiracy theories. Please know that I love everyone and try and fail to imitate Christ, and I love you and thank you for your kindness. I apologize again, I just want your perspective and story on, you know what I mean. I know I'm on a tangent but this is rare chance for me given the circumstances. And sincere thanks again for the breathing, it helps. I will pray for you too!

    Today, on the Feast of Saints Peter & Paul, I was ordained a Reader under the Autonomous Orthodox Metropolia of North and South America and the British Isles. Today we are known predominantly as a Western Rite diocese under ISTOC, the largest of the two major international Old Calendarist unions with over 250,000 faithful. ISTOC (International Synaxis of True Orthodox Churches) is comprised of five synods of bishops from around the world, who all meet as equal and autonomous members of the union. Please pray that God will give me speech as He did for His slow tongued servant Blessed Moses.
