Thanks for this, very useful! I was considering cutting after the splitting of the main cable in two parts, just before the connector, and plugging the red and black into a male cigarette lighter socket.
Great I have been trying to find which wires were the power supply and earth for ages, now i can i get on and do the same mod but to my GS1200. which unusually doesnt have have a power socket !
Nice job there lad. Like how you included all the bits that went wrong and the re thinks along the way. Also 4.25 ""all you do is take it out...squidge it in yer fingers and stick it in" that's a whole other How To video there man 😂😂😂
Possibly yeah, but not necessarily for that reason - the BMW satnav units have a load of data they take from the bike like speed, lean angle etc. - so it's most likely that.
Sup. Does your cradle have backlit buttons? That's what the purple might be for. It could be an illumination feed that tells the device that you're on headlights and either lights up the cradle or maybe switches dark mode on the maps? It works that way in cars at least, but I'm a relative bike n0000b!
Bit of an epic bodge but a satisfying result in the end . A less patient man would have said f¥€k it , and gone to Argos and walked out £300 quid lighter with a Garmin . Good effort.
Thinking of doing the same thing. When you powered it up it showed it just charging, do you have to press on of the buttons on the cradle to get it to go into the main screen ?
Thanks for that, but not having used this Garmin Cradle before. I presume that you press one of the buttons on the side to turn it on or is it a case of taking the Sat Nav off the cradle and using the button on the back ?

You are most welcome
Thanks for this, I need to do something similar but was scared to snip the plugs off in case it bricked the thing !

Need a saxophone intro for that bit.
@@Grumpybikewizard 🤣🤣🤣
Just guessing: is the purple wire to detect that you are moving and if that is the case it won't let you operate the satnav unit?
Possibly yeah, but not necessarily for that reason - the BMW satnav units have a load of data they take from the bike like speed, lean angle etc. - so it's most likely that.

Could be any number of things I don't give a toss about, yeah :-)

Nope, that's the charging screen, you then have to turn it on :-)

Where do we find the cradle? Amazon?
It's the BMW OEM cradle.
Instead to connecting a cigarette lighter adapter is it possible to connect a usb plug to connect to the bike? Same wiring? Thanks again
Why the non stop swearing? Spoils an informative video.
Wasnt raised right, clearly.
