After Indonesia's independence, hundreds of thousands of returnees and thousands of veterans come to the Netherlands. During the post-war reconstruction there is little room to dwell on their experiences. The people, the stories and the facts - certainly when it comes to the war that was waged to preserve the Dutch East Indies - are hidden away as much as possible. But the past continues to gnaw.
Hans Goedkoop - himself from a family with roots in the Dutch East Indies - goes in search of the remains of colonial history in a two-part story. He speaks with the first, second and third generations about the reception in the Netherlands, the silence, the humiliations and the bond with a lost country and culture.

Gefeliciteerd met deze afleveringen. Ik ben er echt dankbaar voor en ze zijn heel respectvol gedaan. Helaas is de dualiteit deel van ons bestaan en bestaat vrede nooit overal tegelijk. Toch gek dat het eigen familieverhaal je zo veel meer raakt. Ik denk aan mijn Oma die met mijn moeder van Java naar NL kwam en die mij ook nooit wat over de gebeurtenissen uit haar jeugd heeft verteld en toch zo dicht bij mijn hart is en ik bij het hare. 😢❤

I can feel the pain of those people you interviewed. Life is about choices, unfortunately the parents made the wrong choice but I strongly believe that choice was "influenced," the right word is "tricked" by Dutch government into believing a) they are part of Dutch society and b) in the part of the Moluccans, they will be assisted in establishing their own country. My mother was imprisoned by the Dutch for spying their military movements and my uncle was killed during an ambush by the Dutch army which I won't be surprised if there were KNIL members. It is 2024 now, we need to look forward, as for the people still living in the Netherland I think they still have the options of spending the rest of their lives as retirees in Indonesia or become a citizen of Indonesia.

Why do you change the name of this series? It's called Indische Rekening, not Indische Afrekening.

I did not change anything, reckoning can be used for berekening, afrekening, rekening, oordeel, tijdrekening, rekenschap, samentelling or verantwoording.

Leuk dat de vertaling is inbegrepen, want mijn (Amerikaanse) schoonzoon was geïnteresseerd in de achtergrond van de Indische mensen. Alleen één vertaling was niet inbegrepen en dat was één in een gesprek waarvan “Indische” was vertaald als “Indonesian” , wat weer verwarrend was voor mijn schoonzoon.
