Amsterdam (Swedish Version) - Lill-Babs
From the cassette "Lektyr Schyssta Låtar 8", Mariann LEK 208, Sweden, 1980
Extremely rare Swedish cover of the Dutch entry to Eurovision Song Contest 1980, "Amsterdam" originally performed by Maggie MacNeal and written by Wilhelm Alberts, Sjoukje Smit, Frans Smit & Robert Wervey. No information on who wrote the Swedish lyrics. Maggie from The Netherlands finished 5th in the final, held in Haag, The Netherlands.
Lill-Babs version is only released on this cassette, issued by the Swedish erotic/men's magazine Lektyr, These compilation cassettes, produced by Mariann Records with a mix of "not original artists" and others were very popular and were only sold where these kind of magazines were available, mostly at gas stations etc. The previous year Lill-Babs had had a huge success with a Swedish cover of "Colorado", the Dutch entry from 1979. Why her rendition of "Amsterdam" never was released on record remains a mystery.
National treasure Lill-Babs (Barbro Svensson) needs no further introduction. One of Swedens most beloved artists of all time. Her career spanned over 6 decades of a neverending stream of shows, tours, recordings, acting, presenting and just being Lill-Babs/Barbro. She passed away 2018 just a few weeks after turning 80, being active to the very end.
