  • In this weeks Edinburgh Vlog we take a quick look at what hotels there are alone Princes Street, and what could be better than staying in a hotel room over looking the castle.
We take a quick look at The Balmoral, Motel 1, Hotel Indigo, The old Waverly Hotel, Mercure, Premier Inn, Easy Hotel and of course the Caledonian Waldorf Astoria. We also have a quick glance at prices which of course are subject to change.

First off - Thank you for all your vids! Booked already into The Grassmarket Hotel this 3rd trip (this coming May!!) Truly my favorite area! That said, I can always use a list of new ideas for the following trip ~ I adore your city

You missed the travel lodge right opp waverley bridge think its above top shop. The entrance is around the back in a side street. We stayed in a family room on the top floor the views over to the old town and castle were unreal

I stayed at the Hub by Premier off of Rose Street on my last trip. It was around £40-50 per night mid week. Not a lot of floor space, but really well designed. Highly recommended if you are traveling by yourself.

Just come back from a stay at the Balmoral. Was lucky enough to stay for 3 nights in a Grand Suite and one in the Bowes-Lyon suite. Truly deserves the praise it gets, brilliant hotel. Perfect position for getting to all the great whisky shops on the Royal Mile. :)

I will always be grateful to you for your videos, back in 2019 you did a video on cockburn street and you pointed at a backpackers (had no idea it was there), at the time we were booked in a place on Grove street because that is what I could get at festival time. So we swapped from Grove st and booked on your recommendation at the backpackers and it help my mum so much because every time she needed to rest we could go back to the place and rest and we still were in the center of everything . If we had been in Grove ST we would have found it hard going back and forth all the time as my mum needed to rest a lot. We are going back to Edinburgh next year and mum wants to stay on Princes street this time so this video has helped a lot.

We stayed at the Mercure in 2011 - called something else then. We traveled with Globus Tours so we had no trouble with busses. It was clean and affordable. Loved Scotland and hope to come back again. Thanks for your videos

Stayed at the Old Waverly - had a room overlooking Scot Monument - was very nice and views were great. Hard to get a pick up and drop off in front because of the bus stops. Nice bar with good food.

6:47 right there, just 1 building up St Andrews Street is a Travelodge. That's where we stayed (by this pint in the trip we just needed something we knew and was in about the right spot). It was fine. Clean, comfortable, well priced. The only weird thing about it was that the entrance is on Meuse Lane, so it's what I would refer to as a back alley. But close to Waverley and everything.
On my next trip I need to figure out whether we stay at the Grassmarket (totally missed that area last trip), on the Royal Mile, or at the bottom of Cockburn (thanks Tony for pointing out that street to me)

Last time I was in Edinburgh (about 4 years ago) I stayed at Motel 1. It was modern, clean and comfortable with an excellent breakfast and I would stay there again. Not good for parking, but very handy for Waverley Station just across the road, and very central for visiting Edinburgh.

But I usually stay in The Frederick St Hotel. 2 minutes walk from Princes St. Price for March 14-19th £169!
(It's even cheaper than the Cockburn St Back-packers. £235?).
It's a super Hotel. Highly recommend it.

I don't stay on Princes St. when I'm there, but closer to the outskirts to both save money and have larger rooms. Because you have buses going all day and night, you can book a room 2 or 3 miles out and it's about 1/2 the cost usually and you don't have to share bathrooms. Breakfast is usually part of the package and you can literally be at in City Centre in 5-10 minutes. BUT...that being said, yes, Princes Street is centerally located, great views, loads of buses and of course, you're already in E.C.C.

Go do a hotel guide on Geoge St. next. I stayed at the Tigerlilly once, very funky...almost too funky! We had a great stay though. I once stayed in a small attic apartment on Rose St. The building started life as a biscuit factory, then a "house of somewhat questionable repute", then short-term rentals. Maybe a video titled, "I can't believe what this used to be"! I still want to see a, "Tony rides a bicycle through Edinburgh" video! Come on Clan Broonford, everybody post a comment...."Tony riding a bicycle through Edinburgh"!!!!!

Where would I need to go ?

In Canada, I would need to go to a gov.
    controlled Liguor store .
In the USA, a private liquor store .
What is the case in Scotland ?

Shame about the pavements! If you're coming from abroad make sure you have good insurance because you might end up in hospital. This is Edinburgh's "prime" street but it's not safe to walk along with all the jutting out paving stones. Anyway maybe the new St James Quarter will be the final nail in the coffin for Princes Street as far as shopping is concerned.
