I was in St. Joseph’s orphanage in Burlington, Vt I was physically abused leaving me with facial disfigured. I am told an elderly nun used to pickup babies by the feet and hit them repeatedly. They were cruel beyond measure, do not assume that abuse did not start early and leave emotional and physical scars. The Catholic Church should be held accountable for what they knew about and encouraged by refusing to change. Cheaper to let it happen!!

My blood ran cold when I saw this. My late husband was born in Thurles workhouse in 1947 and was then incarcerated in St Joseph’s from 1949 to 1958 when he was sent to the Industrial school run by the Brothers at Clonmel. I can’t begin to describe some behavior, it’s just too much. Kids with Oppositional Defiance Disorder-will throw something in your face just for asking them the day or date, or asking them to pick up their pencil! People forget that outside in the schools there was all kinds of abuse physical and sexual. Nuns and Christian brother's and lay teacher's. I know I was one of the victims of physical abuse in state schools. 😢😠Eileen Kennedy was a children's court judge back then in the 70s and she sent plenty of children to reform schools, it's strange how most of the abuse was perpetrated by people from outside of Dublin.

Scotland was no different. They sent these Irish nuns to Scotland to the homes there. Being battered with wooden coat hangers, belts - anything that came to hand. And she would come towards you with her fists clenched and you knew you were for it. Still in therapy at 73.
Lots of bad stuff went on in theses homes., I know very well because I lived in 2 children s homes. One in waterford and the other in wexford. Why don't rte make more programmes on all the children s homes in lreland not just Dublin and killkenny. Lots more stories to come out.
The final investigations were blocked at every step, the person in charge of investigating resigned as a protest. The person taking over was met with the same walls of silence. Eventually 120 mil was agreed to be paid by the Christian brothers in reparations, the Irish tax payers paid the additional 900 million. Most people abused haven't been paid or had a fair hearing in court because there were so many. A large number committed suicide or lead to self destructive ends without proper mental health care. A lot of the abusers were not given jail time or even named, that was part of the stipulations of the reparations. They were never punished, evidence was destroyed or "lost". The government grants meant to pay for little kids food was sent directly to the Vatican. So all food and clothes were produced on site at Althone industrial school by the boys themselves in labour camps, with most being sold off for profit leaving them malnourished. The education they were given was purposely limited to lower grades. They were neglected with a lot dying. 1 shower a week in cold with a wet towel to dry on while being beaten. Absolutely savage beatings disfigurments and humiliations constantly for no reason, a lot of whippings snd beatings performed publicly while they were naked. All letters out censored and any complaints met with more beatings. Rape and molestation on an enormous scale, they also encouraged bullying by kids. There were multiple suicides within the facilities and actual murders too. The Christian brothers would move priests to other facilities when investigations got close to them. Constant denials of seeing anything. A lot of these kids were straight up orphans... sheer horror for an entire childhood and essentially unpunished. The kids were dehumanized and given a number. Were basically concentration camps to sexually, mentally and physically abuse children, thousands died in there. Again, most of the abusers are protected and unnamed, didn't serve a day in prison and were still paid a pension.

General practitioners who visited orphanages and mother & baby homes never seem to have noted anything amiss: it can't just be the blinding effect of religion, since prison and police doctors never see anything either. Army and asylum doctors share their blindness. Social Workers did not have to undress the children. They would have noticed a change in mood and demeanour, but since the philosophy of care used to include breaking the child's will, which the Sisters were good at, that would have seemed all right too.
Industrial schools had many activities all wrong in these schools education should’ve been the first order of business reading and writing along with arithmetic those three subjects should’ve been worked with. For the older kids there are real life skills should’ve been taught if the young men were to have gotten out they would have skills that helped them land jobs in their respective trades.

it is absurd for rational minds to BELIEVE catholic priests and nuns are celibate . I have never believed it. I was raised catholic and attended convent from the age of three to half way through the third grade. I was not thriving; would not eat, was fearful of my own shadow, had nightmares regularly, stuttered, all the symtoms of child abuse , in my case, I have no memory of sexual abuse but I have come to think that even that might be apossibility....but because of an incident that happened on the playground, me and my sister were yanked out of third grade half way through and the family has never looked back. I have only memories of nuns asking the class to pray for my soul when I asked a question in class. I thought it was a sin to ask a question...Then an incident happened when my sister and I were on the playground and she attempted to jump onto the merry-go-round while it was moving and gashed her leg I saw it happen. The nuns lied to our parents and said we presented at the school with my sister already hurt. That night I kept waking up having nightmares about God striking me dead for telling the lie the nuns claimed we had told about the incident.....I thought God would believe the nuns. This was the straw that broke the camel's back because I still thank God that our parents believed us instead of them. That sleepless night for us all is what convinced our parents that we were the ones telling the truth. ....We never had to go back there again...I have known since then, that the catholic church is evil. Today, the rest of the world is finally getting to know it for what it has become since evil forces took it over and corrupted the high echelons that run and control it.

This was my childhood between 1966-1976. This was only the tip of the iceberg.
People forget that outside in the schools there was all kinds of abuse physical and sexual. Nuns and Christian brother's and lay teacher's. I know I was one of the victims of physical abuse in state schools. 😢😠Eileen Kennedy was a children's court judge back then in the 70s and she sent plenty of children to reform schools, it's strange how most of the abuse was perpetrated by people from outside of Dublin.
These poor people what they've been through is horrific. This sadly is a worldwide problem. Ireland, UK, America on and on and the church knew it was happening and protected them, just moving them on to another area to abuse more children.
Scotland was no different. They sent these Irish nuns to Scotland to the homes there. Being battered with wooden coat hangers, belts - anything that came to hand. And she would come towards you with her fists clenched and you knew you were for it. Still in therapy at 73.

The final investigations were blocked at every step, the person in charge of investigating resigned as a protest. The person taking over was met with the same walls of silence. Eventually 120 mil was agreed to be paid by the Christian brothers in reparations, the Irish tax payers paid the additional 900 million. Most people abused haven't been paid or had a fair hearing in court because there were so many. A large number committed suicide or lead to self destructive ends without proper mental health care.
A lot of the abusers were not given jail time or even named, that was part of the stipulations of the reparations. They were never punished, evidence was destroyed or "lost".
The government grants meant to pay for little kids food was sent directly to the Vatican. So all food and clothes were produced on site at Althone industrial school by the boys themselves in labour camps, with most being sold off for profit leaving them malnourished. The education they were given was purposely limited to lower grades. They were neglected with a lot dying. 1 shower a week in cold with a wet towel to dry on while being beaten.
Absolutely savage beatings disfigurments and humiliations constantly for no reason, a lot of whippings snd beatings performed publicly while they were naked. All letters out censored and any complaints met with more beatings. Rape and molestation on an enormous scale, they also encouraged bullying by kids. There were multiple suicides within the facilities and actual murders too. The Christian brothers would move priests to other facilities when investigations got close to them. Constant denials of seeing anything.
A lot of these kids were straight up orphans... sheer horror for an entire childhood and essentially unpunished. The kids were dehumanized and given a number. Were basically concentration camps to sexually, mentally and physically abuse children, thousands died in there.
Again, most of the abusers are protected and unnamed, didn't serve a day in prison and were still paid a pension.
That is one sick organisation.
I hope these perpetrators of these crimes against kids,are getting abused in jail. Bastards.

Social Workers did not have to undress the children. They would have noticed a change in mood and demeanour, but since the philosophy of care used to include breaking the child's will, which the Sisters were good at, that would have seemed all right too.

Industrial schools had many activities all wrong in these schools education should’ve been the first order of business reading and writing along with arithmetic those three subjects should’ve been worked with. For the older kids there are real life skills should’ve been taught if the young men were to have gotten out they would have skills that helped them land jobs in their respective trades.

it is absurd for rational minds to BELIEVE catholic priests and nuns are celibate . I have never believed it. I was raised catholic and attended convent from the age of three to half way through the third grade. I was not thriving; would not eat, was fearful of my own shadow, had nightmares regularly, stuttered, all the symtoms of child abuse , in my case, I have no memory of sexual abuse but I have come to think that even that might be apossibility....but because of an incident that happened on the playground, me and my sister were yanked out of third grade half way through and the family has never looked back. I have only memories of nuns asking the class to pray for my soul when I asked a question in class. I thought it was a sin to ask a question...Then an incident happened when my sister and I were on the playground and she attempted to jump onto the merry-go-round while it was moving and gashed her leg I saw it happen. The nuns lied to our parents and said we presented at the school with my sister already hurt. That night I kept waking up having nightmares about God striking me dead for telling the lie the nuns claimed we had told about the incident.....I thought God would believe the nuns. This was the straw that broke the camel's back because I still thank God that our parents believed us instead of them. That sleepless night for us all is what convinced our parents that we were the ones telling the truth. ....We never had to go back there again...I have known since then, that the catholic church is evil. Today, the rest of the world is finally getting to know it for what it has become since evil forces took it over and corrupted the high echelons that run and control it.

I got off lightly I was only raped by a teacher repeatedly when I was 13-14 it pretty much set me on a path of self destruction that continues to this day I am 68.
