This is actually very helpful. I've seen so many blogs that heavily look down upon cat/rat households. It's hard because I love both of my animals, and coexistence may not be the easiest--but a little work can make anything possible. You got a new sub from me =)
It is definitely possible. The most important thing that we learnt is to have the right cage for the rats. As long as that is secure and safe there is nothing the cats can do to the rats.
We just adopted 5 female rats a few weeks ago and we also have a Siamese cat named MOMO!! She loves to watch them from a 2-4 foot distance and has never gotten close to the cage. I always do outside time with them without Momo just in case though
I used to take the train home late at night and my station had a big rat population. I've always found rats fascinating - city rats. I get a thrill of disgust, but nonetheless, love to watch them. In one apartment I lived in I had rats in my stove! Another place a rat ran across kitchen the floor. Oddly enough both places were quite clean. Rats are ok a a distance, away from where you live. Cheers! A Chicago tale!
Yes!! I've wanted rats all my life but my mom was one of those people thinking they are a pest... Until I moved out and got my boys. Now she always insists on giving them treats when she visits 😂
When I was younger I had a cat and a few different hampsters, I wanted rats but Dad said no, my cat egnored my hampster 99% of the time. Except one I had who escaped her Tank. My cat cat started hunting down mice, rats and voles (looks like a hampster but in gray and native to north america) he would bring every single one of them alive to me. It got to the point we kept leather gloves and a plastic bin to bring his catches back to freedom outside. I still have no clue how he never got rat bites.
We've never had any problems keeping rats and cats. The rats are kept in a very stable and safe cage and we don't let the two interact for safety. Our cats aren't really interested in our rats but it will depend on your cats personality.
I don't see why not. Ours are living perfectly together, we are actually planning on upgrading the aquarium even. The cats drink from the water but that's about it.
My cats were fine with my fish, but you have to make sure you supervise the cats when they are around the fish tank (make sure the fish tank is in a different room when you leave the house
i’m so lucky that my cat justin was raised with rats. they play together and eat together sometimes. they love the same treats etc and cuddle together.
Our cats are actually really good with the rats. They really just ignore them 😅 but it's different in every household I guess so people must be cautious.
If they grow up together I'm sure they can. We don't let the cats be alone with the rats because it's too much risk. Although they don't look like they want to hunt the rats it's not a chance we take. Rather safe than sorry.
We do! They get salads, eggs and other things we eat (if it's rat safe) as well. The dry mix is their 'official' diet but I'd say they get fresh probably 4-5 times a week as well. Dry mix during the day and fresh at night.
It's actually just a toddler pen we got for my brother's twins when they were little. The rats do fit through it though so they can't be left unsupervised 😂
Are your cats outdoor or indoor? I really want to get two or more rats but I have four cats and two of them are outdoor and they bring home lots of ded mice and voles and birds. I'm worried the cats will eat the rats...
Thanks for the video. I have 5 rats and am about to adopt a cat in a few days. I'm not sure how she will react. I'm gonna watch closely >.>!!! I have a double critter nation. I might put up a carboard barrier around the bottom part of the cage just to be extra safe lol
We've been very lucky that our cat's don't seem that interested but it will always depend on the individual. Just make sure that the rats are always safe and don't let them interact unsupervised. Hope all goes well! Crossing fingers for you!
Generally it is advised to have them behind closed doors but we found that none of our cats are particularly interested in the rats so we can let them be in the room. Our cage is sturdy, off the ground and we always triple check its locked correctly first though.
We had a big avian cage with lots of levels, bridges, baskets and so on. We recently lost a few of our old men so we just downgraded to a smaller set up.
The neighborhood cats I befriended became friends of my rats by proxy. It was awkward at first... the cats wondering if the rats were weirds cats and vice versa. Then they hung out in sunbeams together. 😂
Wait till someday she wakes up and feel like mosquitos biting her but see nothing because of rodent mites almost impossible to get rid of she will regret keeping rats for the rest of her life.

Congratulations on your new babies! Rats are so much fun to have ❤️ and what a coincidence that you also have a Momo! I can't believe it! 😊
Always best to have a cage with horizontal bars.
why?
@@barrybbensonnnn easier for them to climb the cage. Think of a ladder 🪜 and the horizontal treads.

They are very interesting and make great pets actually.
I had to drive Lower Wacker Drive at night time going home and I remember the rats down near the river being very large.
@@jilledmondson6894 Lots of restaurant dumpsters and homeless encampments to get food from.
I love rats, much misunderstood animals.

@@MomoSiamese surprising how people change their minds!

Can cats and fish aquarium be kept in one house

Those hooks at 03:55 are not dangerous to rats ?
We never had any issues but our boys were always really laid back and easy to care for, so we never needed to worry too much.
My Tisha was really good with momma rat and babies. She would even babysit.
Can cats be friendly with small animals
If they grow up together I'm sure they can. We don't let the cats be alone with the rats because it's too much risk. Although they don't look like they want to hunt the rats it's not a chance we take. Rather safe than sorry.
is there a reason you dont offer your omnivore rats some fresh green vegetables ?
We do! They get salads, eggs and other things we eat (if it's rat safe) as well. The dry mix is their 'official' diet but I'd say they get fresh probably 4-5 times a week as well. Dry mix during the day and fresh at night.
Do you have a link or the recipe for your rat food mix ?
Hi Ariel, here is a link to the dry mix.

Our cats are outdoor cats. They do bring the odd bird or mouse but we have never had health issues or concerns.

What is your situation with Momo and the rats when you are not home? Is the rat cage kept behind a closed door or is Momo allowed to be in the room?
Generally it is advised to have them behind closed doors but we found that none of our cats are particularly interested in the rats so we can let them be in the room. Our cage is sturdy, off the ground and we always triple check its locked correctly first though.
Rats are adorable :)))
what's your cage set up?
We had a big avian cage with lots of levels, bridges, baskets and so on. We recently lost a few of our old men so we just downgraded to a smaller set up.

It's amazing how well they can get along even though rats should be seen as prey! We never had any problems.
Главное не забыть закрыть клетку))))🐈🐁
Fuckin adorable
You keep yourselves very busy with all your pets hey 😉
It would be very boring around here without them
My cat is so well disciplined I can put my rats on her face and she leaves them alone. She doesn't like it though.
Same!
Wait hold up you keep rats like rats rats rats those rats that you find in the roof
Haha, no they are bred to be pets. They are't just wild rats like the ones you find in the roof.
@@MomoSiamese Oh ok.

The rats all come from reputable breeders, they do not have mites or any diseases.
I had rats for years. I know others that had rats as well. No problems. Never even heard of "rodent mites"
What an ignorant comment ...
