Media Regulation: Crash Course Government and Politics #45
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 січ 2016
- Today we wrap up our discussion of the media by talking about how the government interacts with and influences the content we see. Now it may be easy to assume that because we live in a free-market capitalist society, the only real regulation of the media is determined by the consumers, but this isn’t necessarily true. The government controls a number of factors including the potential for lawsuits, spectrum licensing, FCC fines, and has even tried to pass a bit of legislation. So we’ll talk about how all of these factors influence the media and end with a discussion of a pretty hotly debated topic these days - net neutrality.

My favorite part is how unbiased they are.
The biggest restriction to free speech on TV is not the government, but industries who threaten to withdraw their advertisements from a channel if the channel airs points of view they find unfavorable.
+Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky Can you find me an example, please?
+conradthe2 a while back on the BBC, Top Gear gave a bad review to a fancy Italian sports car, so the company threatened to pull their advertising off that channel... forgetting that the BBC is public funded and has no advertising
That's in Britain. Thanks! Have you got an American example?
+Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky Follow the money
+conradthe2, the animal agriculture industry routinely prevents news broadcasters from airing information about the factory farming conditions under which the majority of farm animals are raised in the United States, where animals are packed together as tightly as possible to save on operating costs. There was one case where a TV station wasn't even planning on discussing on how the animals are treated, but just wanted to invite a vegan chef on to a cooking show, but then they had to disinvite her because the dairy industry threatened to pull all their advertisements from the channel.
nudity on radio is horrible
I feel like radio porn is the best, and because you have a different political view from me, WE MUST FIGHT TO THE DEATH!!!!
+I really hate making up names for this kind of stuff Well they always say the fastest solution is the best one. Remember kids, violence is not the solution. It's the question! AND THE ANSWER IS YES!!!
Really? I can't go back to regular port that radio shit Getz me rock hard
+J B They mean tv signals.
Not to bad on two-way radio
I’d really love to see a 2022 version of this video, in consideration of today’s political climate.
Dear, John Green
Thanks a million for Saving me in my finals. I binged watched your vids and it saved my grade in international studies.
From, Seth
Conserva
Maybe say this on a john green video? lmao
PBS is monopolizing on educational YT-channels
But they are all pretty unbiased and still very educational
_[This comment has been removed by PBS]_
+gnhtd1 _[This comment is pending approval by PBS]_
[PBS does not give a shit about this comment]
+gnhtd1 As long as they keep on supporting all the awesome educational channels they do, I don't really mind :)
I need to watch these videos on 0.75 speed just to take it all in.
Thanks for explaining net neutrality. I always understood what it meant, but now I see why it's important.
+Figaro Fog It's just a bait to restrict what people can or can't publish on internet. They've already approved it in Brazil and, often, judges use the internet neutrality law to censor content. Of course that regulators will not say "we want to be the ones to tell you what you are allowed to speak". They will always present bills to increase their power as if it was the people's interest.
So Reagan is to blame for Fox New's and MSNBC's obnoxious polarity?
Thank you Crash Course for laying knowledge bombs on me. Your series are a hallmark of entertaining and responsible education!
my first job was news paper delivery on my mountain bike when i was a kid, awe those were the days... then they fired the whole staff and brought in guys with trucks to deliver all the papers instead of the kids :(
I am a teacher who will be focusing on the Election process this school year, and your little quick flicks are an easy way to explain it. Thanks for making them.
Jennifer Dearman WOW, how did that go?
Love the crash course videos! You do such a good job!
I sat through 6 grammarly ads while watching a playlist of your guys' videos.
sounds like an incentive to pay for Premium.
Random thought: Crash Course should make a series or even just a miniseries on Greek mythology and/or other ancient polytheistic beliefs. Anyone agree?
There is crash course mythology
Media companies are shooting themselves in the foot by merging and demolishing their diversity of perspective. The internet will always be a place where large media conglomerates and people in their bedrooms are presented on the same playing field, and the new and fresh perspective will always win.
+Isaac Davis The internet does still get censored though.
Gabriel Rangel That's true but as a whole there is a lot less censorship on the web imo.
The internet has a tendency to form "bubbles" around people sharing the same ideas and ideologies. New ideas very rarely enter those circles. Radical ideas on the other side that would not survive in public, can get more and more radical when people all over the country connect and share their ideologies without outside influence.
Off-course, that is not censorship, but very off from an idealized world, where different people/groups share an open and fair discussion in an open place.
Having access to all sides of a debate is a great start and thing - but having access does automatically result in (self-) confrontation with those opposing views.
sarowie ***** The internet favours confirmation bias, most social medias platforms are built this way. It takes somewhat of an effort to go and try challenging your preconceived notions or dogmas.
So, those circles are basically the modern equivalent of a cult.
Trying to find something on when news transitioned from public service requirement for FCC to entertainment
It is not that having access to information shall make us smart but hearing a lot of points of view is better than just hearing one.
How many episodes is this series going to have ?
I guess it's close to the end ...
Esse canal é simplesmente, TOP!!
I wish there was less discussion at all levels about making sure "opposing viewpoints" get equal time.
What's really needed is more emphasis on/attention to media broadcasting *objective truth*
Every time I hear the acronym FCC the music from Family Guy about FCC always comes to my mind.
So, what would an example of media self regulation be?
NICE
Clap Clap Clap, beautiful, smart and funny.
Good job Crash Course.
All news nowadays are basically journalism, they present opinions on facts rather than the facts themselves.
+Thinker technically that"s "Yellow"-Journalism
Could we rename this series to say..."Crash Course 'US' Government and Politics"?
Current title kinda suggest it's generic, sorry for pricklyness ^^
this vid helped me a lot thx
do you have a coverage in the Russo-Japanese war?
I'd thought mortal combat and the esrb and the quiz show scandal would be mentioned.
I like Right and Left Craig!
Craig, I've got the same mug as you bud!
I hope crash course does a series on AP physics one day
Dude reminds me of the little boy from The Middle
is episode 46 the last one
I enjoy it
For those of you who support more regulation everywhere, from health care to free speech to fantasy football, let the internet be an example of how we don't need heavy government regulation for things work out. More regulation of the internet would have killed millions of jobs and shattered our quality of life. It was good that free marketeers prevailed over big government.
+Naveen Yeah, the free market will fix it! That's why Americans have 1/2 the Internet speed of other countries with twice the costs!
...wait.
+No-Stalgia Goggles You have a complete misunderstanding of why American speeds are currently below other countries then. America built their internet infrastructure off the back of the old telephone wires that cris-crossed the country, while other countries didn't even start building their infrastructure until much of the technology was already advanced. So now companies in America have to play catch up with our infrastructure. It's happening, but not at the speed that you want. That's not the fault of the free market, but rather the shear scope of bringing such an infrastructure to a country the size of America.
+No-Stalgia Goggles thanks for doing the job
+Kenny Zhang I'll ignore the grammar (or does Comcast really dictate where you can live?)
To state that Comcast has the monopoly, completely ignores the satellite ISPs or DSN from the local telephone company. Granted that satellite tends to be more costly and DSN is snail paced. That leaves Comcast as the best bang for the buck. So then the question becomes, are you paying substantially more for Comcast than other people living in larger cities that have more choices for cable internet? I would seriously doubt it. I will admit that I only have my own anecdotal experience to go by, but when I was living in OKC, I actually paid slightly more for my cable internet than I currently do here in rural Kansas. In Oklahoma, I had a choice of 3-4 cable providers here I only have the one.
I love watching Crash Course but what happened to John Green ?! 🙄
Can someone summarize what this video is saying please
i thought this was gonna be john and now im sad but this dude seems nice
Why you hating on netflix ? They get forced to PAY for the same as everyone else in a lot of place!
"And the Right Of Rebuttal which ensures that a political candidate will have the opportunity to respond to a political attack if it gets aired."
Given how common political attack ads are, doesn't that mean it could theoretically be possible to rely entirely on your opponent's guaranteed attack ads to give you free ad time instead of raising campaign money for advertising? Have any candidates ever tried this, I wonder?
Why didn't you mention the patriot act?
2:03 unless even one copy of that medium is sold in the UK, then you can sue them 'til your heart's content.
I love all the freedom we get in the USA.
Can someone please explain what "prior restraint" means?
lmgtfy.com/?q=prior+restraint
George Clooney looks more like Burt Reynolds on Crash Course.
Could you do a video on the Broadcasting Board of Governors? RT did a news report comparing their budget versus the BBG's. If RT is a propaganda arm of Russia, is the BBG with all its news and entertainment channels the US's propaganda arm?
world record for most times punching an eagle should go to Craig.
Government has not enforced many of the law for long time.
oh wait, your name is craig? I thought it was greg!
hahaha thats awesome
what happened to John Green
but why is it only for united states
This is exactly why having the choice to be anonymous or to be 'anon' online is a big deal.
hot damn is this relevant today
nice, craig
The highest affirmation of what someone is transcends level 7 to level 8 as a point to reach. The definition of a man being one, for instance. 7 transmutes being like sporting at the end of competitive reality, which, personally can have a natural wild sinfulness as not being beautiful.
is he from a pair of triplets? i biggening to think thats not photoshopped.
you learn something new everyday dont we?
A video about media regulation that doesn't mention campaign finance laws? Campaign finance laws are the biggest restriction on political speech in the US today.
The video is informative but would be much more effective if he spoke more slowly! It is difficult to absorb the content.
What? People still watched the IP law series, even after Stan opened it with (paraphrasing) "You Linux nerds deal with intellectual property too, you just don't think you do?"
lawl media.
Whoever thinks that we live in a free market capitalist society is in desperate need of economic education.
why no crashcourse maths?

Net Neutrality needs to learn the meaning of DFTBA...the FCC for that matter needs to as well.
darling, fetch the battle axe!
+SpeakShibboleth lol
Hard to keep up. He talks so fast.
Hi
WAASSSAP
Reagan was right to abolish the "fairness doctrine." There's nothing fair at all about forcing broadcasters to air what the government thinks is the appropriate content. They should be free to show what they want.
+Naveen It was not what the government thinks it's right. Craig was kind of biased right there. The fairness is when you air a program criticizing, I don't know, the Baltimore riots and you have to air another defending it. Yes, that would be a good thing (of course, i don't think it would work because of politicians, but it's a good idea)
***** now I understand, and you are right. I wish we could have a true free and fair media, but all solutions I see or think have a backlash. It's so easy to censor the media, but so hard to make it right... Subsides wouldn't work, nor the fairness doctrine. This makes me sad
and thank you for giving a good argumnt to the issue, you actualy are right
+Naveen
From what he said in the video, it was _not_ about forcing broadcasters to air what the government thinks is appropriate but instead to actually stop the broadcasters to _only_ air what _they_ think is appropriate. It's fair in the sense that both sides of a political debate are adequately covered and not one more than the other.
Of course, that has more or less obvious flaws but the point is that it is not in any way connected to what the government would like you to broadcast. In fact, it could easily force a broadcaster to show content that both the government and the broadcaster unanimously wouldn't want to show.
*Edit*: Fixed grammar
***** Unfortunately he is right. And it's not for despise for the truth, but because self-interest comes before public interest in this individualist economy
Diana, the Inorganic Vegan Isn't there a "right to answer in the US"? If you have a false acusation about you or a criticism, in Brazil you can demand in justice that your answer is aired at the same time of the day. It happened once on the biggest channel here, and the one who got the right to answer was one of the biggest critics of the network, it was pretty awesome
I wonder if it would be a good idea to pu an upper age limit on being a politician. Like, let's say ,over 40 years, you'd no longer be allowed to run for any office. This would guarantee that fresh viewpoints and way of thinkng is introduced in to the political life more often.
***** LOL :D
***** Well, you implied a republican senator's existence is in some way benefical, so I thought you were joking.
He did call my country's prime miniter a neo-fascist dictator, so credit where it's due, though.
***** Well, to be honest, I don't feel home in Hungary, but now... nor would I in the West. Instead of co-operating regarding the whole refugee situation, we broke apart to a hundred pieces, begining with Ass-hat's like Orbán. If we co-operated, the refugee situation wouldn't be a third as big of a problem as it became. And if the EU didn't act like fucking pushovers, both to loud mouthed shitty member states like Hungary, nor with the part of the refugees who turn criminals, of course.
I guess the place i call home is where my boyfriend is near me...
+1234kalmar for your country, that might be true. On the other hand: I don´t like 20 year old politic students with a curriculum vita that under job experiences can be summed up to "handing out pamphlets for a charity" running for office. Especially in offices/functions like science/research/medical I would like to see people with relevant experience in that field. Given that those fields have a long learning/study time and those offices needing a lot of experience, setting an upper age limit would not be a good idea.
Maybe a different idea: What about a limit on how long a politician can serve?
If a politician can only serve two voting periods in a high political office, it would pull up new people into office every so often, without forcing people to start the political career with 20 and then to already end it with 40 being left with no further career options.
sarowie I like your idea a lot! And maybe make it mandatory to have a degree on the field you are a minister of. Like, If you want to be a minister of education, you have to have a Teacher's diploma, Health and welare ministers should have a doctorate and/or at least 5 years experience in leading position in a hospital, and so on.
NO IT"S STILL NOT JOHN GREEN! NOOOOOOOOOOOOo

Review
under 301!!!
almost under 301 :(
Regulate this!
Game of Thrones isn't basic cable. That's paid subscription service. Special. That's why HBO is basically soft core porn half the time when they do a show: subscription service means basically no restrictions.
Basic cable is basic. No paid services included - unless your on a non-basic package.
Seriously, Crash Course, you guys can't figure out how cable works? This is such a disappointing mix up. Comedy Central would've been a valid example.
CNN should watch this
screw off mate
lol i have that same shirt.
Net neatrulity is pointless
CRAIG!
Never been the early.
first
Oh Craig, you hot mess
News media shouldn't have freedom of the press/freedom of speech when reporting on news and must always only report from a source unless they explicitly say they are editorializing and what they say is not necessarily true nor to be considered as true
They cannot be, unless they are filming it as it's happening, then the happening itself is the original source and on film
***** Could you give me an example for when the NYT has been the original source for a news story? I'm not sure how that would be possible, but I'd like to see it
Unless the event happens inside a NYT office, they have to get it from someone else, right?
***** Then they should state that it's from an anonymous source and cannot be verified, that's fine
YES! thank you government for keeping me safe I will surrender everything you deem problematic in the bill of rights
why does he punch the eagle?
You must be new
+Sarah Johnson I for one are here for quite a few episodes and I don´t know why he punches the eagle. Sure - he does it every video, so it has become a tradition. But: I still don´t know, but I am interested in why and how it started. So, the question is actually very interesting and I would like to know the answer too.
+Sarah Johnson Yeah, I've actually seen a bunch of these, but still no clue what's up with the eagle.
+JMan ditto (#feelthebern!)
I don't like it, even if it is a meme...
heyy
+o2brhubarb first

Your graphical content on net neutrality was terrible and misleading as to how that works.
I love the show, but that was a rare failure. Yet, a very important one.
I really don’t see how any of this is constitutional
CENSORSHIP
3:37 1997? Ronald Reagan was President in 1997? Really? Take down this video and reupload it without this error.
+d 1987*
What does he keep punching the eagle it doesn't add anything to the show
I"M GONNA SUE YOU CRAIG
Am I the only one that like censorship of offensive content and think there's not enough?
Felicia Ingram What you may find offensive might be different to what some other person finds offensive, therefore there wouldn't be an end to censorship, and it would just become government suppression of free press and media
All your base are belong to cats.

Then Don't Watch???
