  • Audi has finalised its deal to buy into Sauber and make the Swiss team its works Formula 1 entry in 2026.
Less than two months after we learned Audi was definitely going to build an engine for the new rules, we now know for sure which team will be running that engine.
There’s plenty to ponder as the first-ever Audi F1 project takes shape, and we’re here to explain how it will work, what key questions still need to be answered - and what the latest is with Volkswagen Group sister brand Porsche as the Audi programme gathers pace.

Don't know about everyone else, but I know I'm not the only one who calls the team Sauber unless I really think about it. I've heard commentators switch between the Alfa Romeo and Sauber names since the hook up. That team will always be Sauber first and foremost, and even if it's not everyone's "first choice" team, any time they do well, I'm pretty sure we're all really happy! Almost as emotional as when Minardi got a point lol.
Not kidding, I could end up in tears 😂. When Vettel won in the Toro Rosso car, not long (in F1 terms) after it had been bought out from Minardi, and still had mostly Minardi mechanics working there, I was sobbing my heart out with joy!

A Porsche-Andretti 11th entry would be nice to have, considering they're already partnered in Formula E, it would make for good branding for that to carry over into F1 too, also with the budget cap, there's a lot of staff that have been made redundant from other teams, so bringing experienced F1 engineers and personal on-board will be achievable, the only real massive expense would be building new facilities or renovation and upgrading of the abandoned Manor facilities

The Audi deal with Sauber was in the making for a long time, no surprises there. Porsche's future without the Red Bull deal doesn't seem so clear, though. Running with Audi engines would be as polemic as running Ferrari or Mercedes engines, but the VW board could make Audi rebrand their engine as VW for neutrality. Another option would be to buy a stake in Alpha Tauri and run with RBPT engines, but how competitive would that be?

If I remember hearing correctly Mateschitz always said AlphaTauri was always for sale for the right price. I would see Porsche buying them more likely than Andretti being on the grid. With the cost cap and new pay deals the 10 other teams don't want to dilute that prize pool further. Bring 2026 would be good to see a closing up the grid just need Williams and Aston Martin to improve a bit more, this deal should sort out Sauber and then any team has the potential of a podium if not a race win.

Aside from having a bit of longevity and having some top drivers come through their lineups before moving on to successful teams, I don’t really understand why people are so fond of Sauber. I don’t really see the team as anything other than filling up the grid, they have 1 race win in like 30 years of operation? I’d rather see Audi take over completely, remove all Sauber affiliation and become a full fledged works operation. Ideally they would’ve invested in their own infrastructure and not had to take a team over, but 3-4 years probably isn’t enough to build facilities and then create a competitive package

Second, its great that they bought an existing team that can't compete even with the cost cap because that will give them the funds necessary to at least try to and have 1 less non competitive team on the grid (Just need to get Haas and Williams fixed)

I am a Swiss guy and hope that the team dose not get dropped like the other times when a german partner was onboard with the team...
But I hope that the team will grow and fight at the front, but as Sauber-Audi under a Swiss-flag... but that is not likely. More likely is that the team runs under the name Audi or better Audi Sauber with opefully a Swissflag.
    Anyway the team remains Sauber.

I’m not sure in what world Alfa Romeo is in the upper midfield; being 6th and with 2.5x less points than the team in the true middle position is… well, the low midfield. If we were to split the field into front runners (RB, Ferrari and Merc), upper midfield (Alpine and McLaren), lower midfield (Alfa and Aston) and backfield (Haas, Alpha and Williams), I think it would be a more accurate way to place Alfa Romeo.
Very nitpicky, but it’s always hard to find problems with Scott’s stuff 👌
