  • www.leosaysays.com - The Annesley Old church was built in the 12th/13th Century by the Annesley family, replacing an old Norman church. It is very close to the old Annesley Hall, which as recently as 1997 was destroyed by fire.
The Church and site are mentioned in the works of great writers Lord Byron and D. H. Lawrence. It was important to the aristocracy of the local area, including the Annesley, Chaworth, Musters and Manners families.
In relatively recent years the site has been recognised as an Ancient Monument by English Heritage, and put on the Heritage at Risk register.

Who owns Annesley Hall now? Is it still the council, as I heard a rumor it was sold on?

I am not sure. Though when I visited they were doing up part of the hall, so perhaps it has changed hands? (though they could just have been reinforcing the window barriers).
