Thanks--and I just knew I had to include Doc Brown in there, as he's what I imagined Doctor Hauzer to look like (not really any art of him in the manual or in game)
I'm not sure, it seems like this channel is just not really popular in the search results/home page recommendations. But regardless, thank you for coming by!
That's the very first thing I thought when I booted up the game--had to mention it somewhere in the video. It's also got a bit of those Inspector Gadget vibes, as someone pointed out to me on Twitter.
what a awesome thing to know, that Alone in the Dark was NOT the first Survival Horror Game. Never heard of Doctor Houzer, so thank you very much for piece of video game trivia ^^
Thanks man...BTW, still looking forward to "that" video of yours! Alone in the Dark is probably the first real "modern" iteration of a survival horror game, but of course, it goes back all the way to the 80s...some say Sweet Home is the first, some say War of the Dead is...but I have no dog in that fight, so I'll let others battle in my stead.
I´m ashamed... haven´t worked on "that" Video for quite some time (maybe 4 weeks) but the weather here in germany was allmost allways pretty nice and the fact that i live in a commune makes it even harder. "Nostromo" by Akira Takiguchi, released in Japan in 1981 by ASCII Corp for PC, and "Haunted House" by James Andeasen, released in America 1982 by and for the Atari 2600. These are the two earliest survival horror games released in their respective countries. Both could use remakes for a new generation of gamers unfamiliar with their survival horror roots.

I'll never understand why people complain about ports and remasters. First of all, it's worth supporting just for the sake of game preservation. Second of all, it's important to keep in mind that they're not aimed at people who have already played the game. Ports and remasters are aimed at people who didn't or couldn't play the game when it first came out. It makes it easier for people to play older games, and isn't that a good thing? Showing kids what actual quality games are like? Not the mindless, easy, shallow, mediocre interactive movies masquerading as video games that we get these days.
Am I the only one who went like *OOOOOOHHH!!!!* in a very high pitched voice on the mention of Riverhillsoft the legendary creators of Overblood 1 and 2 ?
I think you may be the only one here in the comments section, but I'm sure at least a couple of people who watched this share in your enthusiasm of those games. I'm going to try to pick them up the next time I hit up the Book-Off circuit.
Watch out for PAL version of Overblood 2, while it was translated it's glitchy(it can prevent you from progressing at one point) and half PAL optimised, which means that if you play it on an NTSC PSX the sound's gonna go out of sync and cut out during scenes.
I already loved River Hill Soft for their JB Harold games but this is amazing, the usage of audio is so impressive for a game this early in the 3D era, the 3D it self is extremely impressive.
The development of this game is insanely weird. In the dev docs it clearly states how to make a smooth gameplay, and the textures in this game just straight up ignore all suggestions lol. But to be fair, back then rougher gameplay was more forgiven. People seem to forget that before 5th gen gaming, PC gaming was very rough. Many people played doom at 15fps on their dad's PC and enjoyed it. High fps has spoiled people lol
I quite like the look of this. That 3D is genuinely impressive for the 3DO which could move maybe 4 polygons a second on anything that wasn't a racing game. It's a shame Doogie went crazy in older age and murdered his assistants. I do like how you find the genuinely obscure stuff to cover sometimes. I need to get playing Sweet Home again. Played it a while back without a translation patch and man I ended up going in circles. Like that you used some of the music from it towards the end.
Thanks man--yeah, I was genuinely impressed with the look and performance of this game, despite how poorly it should have held up by today's standards. And...we've addressed this Doogie drama elsewhere, so I'll leave it at that. Nice to hear you recognized the Sweet Home music--since I mentioned the game, I figured it would be fitting to use some in the video...that and I had to, because there's only like ten minutes of music from Doctor Hauzer I was able to use.
Haha good idea to put easter eggs! Kept my eyes glued until the end! I think one is that newspaper pic from Doc in Back to the Future 2... :) Also near the end you used the intro song to Alone in the Dark... There's probably others in those black and white pictures but couldn't figure them out. By the way it's pronounced Infogrames as in "kilograms" Great video man! You put in so much work each time it's like unfair! :)
Thanks buddy, and I appreciate the tips on pronunciation...as I mentioned on Twitter, I used to pronounce it the right way, but that gosh darned internet screwed me this time. I included more than five "easter eggs" in this video...half haven't been mentioned yet.
Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) well, besides the ones I have mentioned there's that beetlejuice sounding opening song but I guess that is from the game? And also the stone tablets are possibly from Indiana Jones?
It is pretty interesting--and I didn't realize just how bad the frame rate and how goofy the running animation were until looking over my recorded footage...it's a beautiful trainwreck.
While it's certainly a big influence on Resident Evil, I don't think it's quite accurate to call it a horror game. Much like Alone in the Dark 2, 3 and 4, it's just not scary. It's not even trying to be. It's much more of a mystery adventure, which makes sense given Riverhill's history with the JB Harold series. They would later revisit this style of game with Overblood on the PS1.
Confirmed, this is one of my favorites of yours and it's really great that I was able to help out in a small way in this episode! You are one of the few channels left that put a lot of care into every second that seems to fly by. As far as the game goes, it looks so much like Alone in the Dark. What a shame this wasn't ported to DOS! I would have played the hell out of this for sure. Man, fuck the 3DO. (ok, I secretly love the 3DO. I wanted one so badly back in the day!!!)
Well, I don't know about that whole thing about putting care into every second, but if that's the case, you're in that club, too. Thanks, man, for that and for helping me get the Alone in the Dark footage. Apparently, you need to work on Alone in the Dark videos or something called Time Gate: Knight's Chase...do it. And don't fuck the 3DO, make sweet, tender love to it...unless she likes it rough.
Somewhere, a vibrant and active Doctor Hauzer quiz group is crying. This was a great video until you attempted to spread your anti-CD-I propaganda at the end. It's too bad that you feel the need to piggyback off the greatness of the CD-I to remain relevant. You need to let the CD-I into your heart as your console saviour.
I could hardly believe my ears. Best bad console???? Neither the CD-I or 3DO are bad consoles, they are merely misunderstood by simpleton plebeians. In fact, they are part of the HOLY Quadrinity of 4th gen CD consoles. You know, the CD ROM ROM, the Mega CD, The 3DO, and the CD-i. None can deny the Power and Greatness of the CD-i.
That's hilarious--and I never wanted to hurt the feelings of fellow Doctor Hauzer quiz groupies...my apologies. But I DO NOT apologize for blowing up the CD-i in my video--I put that in there specifically for you, as a symbol of the strength of our friendship...and the strength of the 3DO, the one true best bad gaming console. I love how the seeds have been sown for civil war in your next stream, judging by the responses in this thread...
Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) Again, for someone who claims to hate the CD-I you do bring it up a lot lol. I know you're only acting out because you desire that which you don't have. One day you'll feel the warm embrace of the call in your heart.
It does have a pretty good soundtrack, especially for the era--I did sneak in a few songs from Resident Evil games, Alone in the Dark, and Sweet Home, though...had to, since there's a lack of music in Doctor Hauzer.
I think alone in the dark was the original survival horror game. I actually new about Doctor houser, but I always thought it was more like dragons lair and was heavily inspired by seventh guest as well.
YO! AWESOME! I remember seeing _Overblood_ a couple years ago when GameInformer played through the whole thing and wondering who the hell was this Riversoft and why did Level 5's Akihiro Hino make one of the weirdest and most entertaining survival horror games ever. I looked into them and found out they made _Hauzer_ before those games, and have been fascinated by it ever since, but no one has in-depth footage/coverage of it on UA-cam. This is AWESOME to finally see a video on it like this! Also, a teaser for either War of the Dead or Square's Alien game? Can't wait. I can't believe you can play some of these things; they're so antiquated. But judging by HardcoreGaming101's writeup on War of the Dead at least, it sure has some neat ideas.
Glad you were able to quench your Doc Hauzer thirst, finally! And yes, you saw one of the easter eggs hidden in the video...probably going to have to "git gud" at War of the Dead before I even consider a video on it, but Aliens should be doable. Good write-up on WotD, I remember reading that many years ago after I got the PC-Engine edition of the game, and never imagined I'd own the original on MSX2...but here I am today...
Man, this game really does remind me of Alone in the Dark. Before I even saw your video and just saw the thumbnail I got that vibe. I played A LOT of Alone in the Dark and Alone in the Dark 2 back in the early 90's in DOS. Although, unsurprisingly, I'd never heard of or seen this game until now. It looks... clunky and strange, much like many early 3D games. I have the most trouble going back to games like this for some reason. I honestly feel like early 3D stuff just has a really hard time holding up. Although I'm glad you had a good time playing it! Just not sure I would... But you never know!
You'd be surprised at how well this game flows, despite its 4 FPS gameplay and awkward animations...I honestly didn't even notice in my playthrough. Let's try to get Andrew to do some Alone in the Dark stuff, or from what I just heard in the comments, Time Gate: Knight's Chase...maybe you could collab with him as an old school DOSer.
Yep they definitely lifted from The Last Crusade. Seems like an interesting game even if compared to AITD. 3DO seemed to get a lot of game releases in Japan.
Well I've only ever seen one in person when I visited my sister's family they wanted like 200 bucks for it ;x I wish I could find a working one for 50 bucks xD
Hey Jimmy do you think you'll ever cover any of the Super Robot wars games . Since 99% of them never left Japan due to licensing issues . Because of this the west missed out on most of them . So maybe ya could show them some love :p
Looks interesting. I've heard of the game before and seen some screens, but never much detail on the game. I'll probably give it a try as I have a 3DO. It's another 3D 3DO game that suffers from the machine's gimped CPU. It was about half as fast as it needed to be....
Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) I will. One annoying issue I get with my PAL 3DO is that the game plays in a small square in the middle of the screen, and that's on a CRT TV from back in the day. It does with both import and PAL games, and I can't find any reason why. This only happens on the 3DO too. Every other retro console I own (and I own quite a lot) renders full screen no issue. Anyway lol. I may try the English patched version as the JP original is not available on eBay!
That's...very weird...I wonder what could be causing it? Also, you'll catch no bad vibes from me if you decide to go to the free game store on the internet to play--though I was told recently that someone on etsy is selling English "repros" (ahem, bootlegs) of the game...
Yeah man, you ready to join? If you do, I hear Panasonic will port over Doctor Hauzer to the Vita...and Naxat Soft may just bring all five volumes of Virtual Cameraman to it as well...download only in the States, though.
Good job as usual. So i found a import im sure youll appreciate. Its a crossover game that never got localized. Namco x Capcom for ps2. It has characters you have covered before such as valkyrie gil from tower of druaga and even klonoa. And many more id love to see a video on that. Or another more modern game i could never play Yakuza Kenzan. Sadly i lack the funds to support you. But once i do you're first on my list of People id back to the moon.
Thanks, I appreciate that, and don't worry about the Patreon thing--that's just for people who have the extra means and would like to help the channel grow, no pressure for anyone to pitch in, nor ill-will for those who don't/can't. Thank you, though. And also, thanks for bringing up Namco X Capcom--I actually do have the game, and I wanted to talk about it for many years. Even got the official guide for it...but to be honest, there's a good video on it by the late JewWario that pretty much covers it, so I think I'm going to focus on something else...maybe more of the games of the characters featured in that game. I will make a mention of NXC when I finally finish up those Valkyrie videos...
Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) Alright understandable I just got the game and despite the translation being awful its great. Hope to see more good content from ya cause you never disappoint.
First saw this game previewed in an old EDGE magazine back in the days, very interesting Alone in The Dark clone, the same song looping and repeating after each screen is a real problem. It's amusing to see similarities with the first Resident Evil too, mainly the boulder sequence.
Well...the music changes SOMETIMES...er, like at the end of the game...and hey, the music even cuts out in certain areas...uh, yeah...so it's fine...it's all...just...fine...
Nope, sorry, I can't see any cel-shading in this one. There are pre-baked shadows on characters and models but no real-time surface shading with low-gradient colors in the vein of JSR. The Dreamcast still remains the birthplace of real-time cel-shading until new discoveries are made. I wouldn't mind seeing a cel-shaded remake of Doctor Hauzer, however,
Fear Effect also had painted on shading instead of real time but it doesnt change the fact that game has fantastic presentation even now it still looks stylish and one could mistake it for some themed indie game that came out yesterday.
Right, can't argue with that. I often get the feeling that it's one of those technical areas where people often assume that it must be cel-shaded because it uses cartoony textures on 3D characters. It's too easy for me to get hung up on it, so I'll stop bitching for now.
I know what you mean--I've always considered Wacky Races on DC to be the first cel-shaded game, but I dunno, some of the facial animations kinda sorta have what might be "real-time cel-shading," but probably not...it's something that gets debated, for sure, which is why I made a point to say it "maybe the first," ha ha.
Much like Alone in the Dark, this game just doesn't scream "horror" to me. When I think of Horror, I don't think of bright colors and outfits. I think dark, shadowy areas...but honestly this may just be a product of its time. I doubt shadowing like in RE or SH was anywhere near possible in a game like this, but it's still really impressive and ambitious for its time. This was a nice spotlight on a game I'd never even heard of!
Jesus, even the door transitions?!?!? I would have loved this as a kid.
I know, it's like baby Jared was meant to play this game.
I'm really impressed with Adams facial expressions, his character model looks extremely dated but his facial expressions are great for their time.
One of the newspaper clippings has Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown haha. Great video as always!
I noticed that too! Loved it!
Thanks--and I just knew I had to include Doc Brown in there, as he's what I imagined Doctor Hauzer to look like (not really any art of him in the manual or in game)
How have I not been recommended your channel until now?
I'm not sure, it seems like this channel is just not really popular in the search results/home page recommendations. But regardless, thank you for coming by!
you can tell the tried with the atmosphere!! The hollow noise walking over the floor is a simple touch games still dont use today lol
That's very true, ha ha. AAA devs, take note of the sound design from this small 1994 horror game on a failed gaming system.
That opening music sorta sounds like it's from Beetlejuice.
8minsfromsol yeah, very VERY similar lol
That's the very first thing I thought when I booted up the game--had to mention it somewhere in the video. It's also got a bit of those Inspector Gadget vibes, as someone pointed out to me on Twitter.
BeetleJuice

Very true--if only our Doctor Hauzer quiz group had more members, we might be able to form a cult following behind the game.
12:45 "Nu uh uh, no killing." These old paintings have their comedic value
Someone knows his bible stories. Ha ha, I do love Abraham's expression in the painting, too.
Yet another example of Japan getting something really interesting. Thank you for bringing it attention! I do enjoy seeing games that came out before the juggernaut that is BioHazard.
Thanks buddy--you should give it a try using that special store online where you get to play games for free...
Awesome!!! I wasn't aware of this 3DO game at all! Downloaded the english translation =D

@@ImportGamingFTW quite a few of them are JPN exclusive and they're Text adventure Detective games, I loved the PC-Engine CD game

0:36 I swear, that music sounded like a creepy take on In The Hall of the Mountain King.
I can hear that.

My pet rock.
So hawt.

love your videos man! Some of the best on UA-cam IMO

Do I also have to become a patron to get that last Valkyrie video?
Does anyone have scans of the japanese manual?

"The best bad system out there" i've lost my shit xDDDD

By that logic it's the least worst. 😉

Doc Brown?
Yes sir, you found one of the "easter eggs" I threw into the video!
That protagonist looking like Cipher from Final Fantasy 8
This has got me really interested to play this. Great video
Thank you, I hope you found a chance to play it since commenting!
Alone in the Dark seldom gets its due, so its nice to see people mention it.
It's surprising how little it gets brought up. Most of the time I hear about it, it's usually in association with Resident Evil retrospectives.
Damn, the soundtrack is really good! Sounds more like castlevania than an horror game though, which is fine by me.
It does have a pretty good soundtrack, especially for the era--I did sneak in a few songs from Resident Evil games, Alone in the Dark, and Sweet Home, though...had to, since there's a lack of music in Doctor Hauzer.

One of the games of my childhood!!!!!
The 3do is amazing because it doesn't have any copy protection 😅
Another trailblazing quality of the world's greatest bad video game console.
I've always wanted to try to get into this game, but man.. that framerate. I usually bail out after the first couple of rooms.
Try playing it on the 4DO emulator at 200% speed, it becomes much more playable!
Ha ha, well, that's an interesting way to play.
Man, this game really does remind me of Alone in the Dark. Before I even saw your video and just saw the thumbnail I got that vibe. Another great video! Very interesting game.
Thanks very much!
I love old horror games why can't I ever find a 3DO that doesn't cost my leg for sale :(
Damn, are they really that pricey these days? But to be fair, though, I guess even in Japan, getting a clean, working system is usually $50 or more.
Well I've only ever seen one in person when I visited my sister's family they wanted like 200 bucks for it ;x
I wish I could find a working one for 50 bucks xD
Well, maybe I can help you with that someday.
Great video
Yay I was waiting for your new video😊
Thank you, I hope it was worth the wait.
I hope you'll give it a try, especially as a proud owner of a 3DO, gimped CPU be damned.
Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) Yea it is. I've never experienced anything like it before lol.
I played this long ago at my cousins house fun game sweet upload.
Nice to hear--I never had a chance to play this or the 3DO until very recently.
Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) You'll have alot of fun I recommend the horde, and lucienne quest,
Thanks--I know about The Horde, and it's "on my list," but I've never heard of Lucienne Quest.
You starting a bald head club or what? Good video though. Think it will get a vita port?
Yeah man, you ready to join? If you do, I hear Panasonic will port over Doctor Hauzer to the Vita...and Naxat Soft may just bring all five volumes of Virtual Cameraman to it as well...download only in the States, though.
Play it on 4do and increase the clock speed, it worked a treat with doom
Thanks very much.
Nice video
Cool, thanks.
Hi welcome back
Why, thank you.
Ι remember this getting some very bad reviews in magazines at the time
Looks like an interesting game!
Hmmmmmm...that music doesn't sound at all like the Beetlejuice theme....hmmmmmm....
Oh no, not at all...that lawsuit from Warner Bros. is TOTALLY unjustified...
Nope, sorry, I can't see any cel-shading in this one. There are pre-baked shadows on characters and models but no real-time surface shading with low-gradient colors in the vein of JSR. The Dreamcast still remains the birthplace of real-time cel-shading until new discoveries are made. I wouldn't mind seeing a cel-shaded remake of Doctor Hauzer, however,
It's not Cel Shading for sure, but it is probably the first attempt at that specific type of look in 3D
The birthplace was PSX with Fear Effect followed by Dreamcast with Sonic Shuffle.
This looks neat! Might have to try it out. If not solely for the ripoff Beetlejuice music :P
Good ole doogie hauser
Owned it in the early 2000's, seemed too far backwards it was extremely clunky
do I detect a hint of the friday the 13th cha cha cha
That does indeed look interesting but also terrible. Great video!
Interesting but also terrible...I'll take it!
Whhhaaatttt?
Yup.
the best bad system is fm towns marty
