Baking Coconut Cake On The Beach In The NEW Firebox Ultra Cook Kit!

  • Awesome Camp Oven System! Baking While Camping Just Became A Piece Of Cake!
I wanted to try baking a cake in the new Firebox Ultra Cook Kit using salt as thermal mass (between the layered pans) so I bought a yellow cake mix at the beginning of our Hawaii trip. After tasting some locally made coconut we realized how easy it would be to convert yellow cake mix Into a decadent rich coconut cake. I replaced the water with coconut milk and added a couple handfuls of shredded coconut. Tasted Great!
Adding the salt as thermal mass worked even better than I expected. It tempers the heat as well as regulating heat fluctuations. I was using charcoal, which provides an even low heat, but I think a small flame could also be used without high risk of burning the bottom of whatever it is that you're baking. I think this is the simplest and most foolproof baking methods I've tried. In this video I was using the eight inch Kit with the optional Shallow Camp Plate. The optional cutting board is also shown, but not used.

What I enjoy about this channel is that the videos are simple. I usually don't enjoy vlogs, but here it's like; minimalist, chill, innocent family time outdoors. No flashy music/editing, ultra lavish showboating, etc... Keep up the great work!
Edit: And you get to learn a few culinary things lol

Brother, you need to create a special lid for baking using top fire source heat. One that creates distance between top fire source (coals) and top lid. It should also not allow any ash to get into the food. Lastly, it will need a handle to remove. Great videos and good luck!

You forgot the cream cheese icing 🔥
The salt was an interesting addition. I’ve tried lots of things as a heat brake, ceramic pie weights work but I think the easiest is just an air space. I sometimes use the top of a large can with the pot support crossbars for a Trangia Stove.

    • @fireboxstove

It has to be said that Steve in an absolute expert at using the cook kit.anyone buying his stuff should not be put off if their attempts do not come off as good as Steve’s at first.when Dutch oven style cooking like Steve is in this video you need to get a bit of experience so you know when to manage the heat.he makes it look easy and at first it is not 😂as I found out.I’m 36 now and 13 years ago I’d of binned my kit because I would not have had the patience to master it.

Where's the butter? I read below you had the coffee off set. That sure looked good, nice job.

Looks great! Thanks for sharing. I’m trying this on my FireBox set up this weekend but I think I may try the cowboy plate on top to give the cake a bit more top space ? Thanks again for your recipe. 👍🏻

Always wondered why you never seem to bring along bread to your fishing trips? It seems like a practical choice. It’s filling, light and lasts awhile. Is it personal choice or is there another reason you don’t bring bread?

Sometimes I do bring bread, just depends on the trip and how much I am packing. Thanks!

Wouldn't you waste less if you sealed the bag and slit a bottom corner, being able to easily squeeze all of it out cleaner?

I did have a look but not all 175 comments so may have been asked. On the salt thermal mass why not use sand or dirt its all around so don't need to carry something extra

I'm sure that would be a possibility but for me I would rather opt for the salt since I know what's in it and that it's food safe being that I'm putting it in my trusty fry pan. Otherwise I would want to be careful to wash my pan well after the project was finished. Thanks 😊

How about digging up some clams and ousters? Now that is one I would like to see.

@@fireboxstove Future family roadtrip/video? Maybe you can take a trip to the West Coast and hit up Seattle, Oregon, or California coastline? That would be a nice video and good family trip. Not sure where you are from but you seem like you have that California or West Coast vibe to you.

It seems that the plate was too shallow and touched the top of the cake. Perhaps two pie tins and the pizza stone on the fry pan under the lower tin?

I know we didn't see it here, but can you please let me know the name or model, etc of the coffee press or set-up you use? New subscriber and I'd greatly appreciate it. My new addiction is your videos! Keep up the great work.

Hey awesome vidz dude! I've been wanting to get one of these and use it at the beach. Are these allowed on public beaches day and night or only in secluded areas?

I think so. It didn't seem different. I think it is possible to burn the salt but it didn't seem burnt.
