Darwyn Cooke was a personal hero of mine, and like the person who wrote in, DC New Frontier is probably my favorite DC property of all time. It's the only story I've ever read that stirred a feeling of patriotism and love for what America is and should be. Rest in Peace to a true legend of the industry, and in my opinion, simply the best.
I think the Geoff Johns era proved that multiple Green Lanterns can work. Two Green Lanterns per sector seems very fair, with two of Earth's GLs being relegated to Earth's sector of the universe while the other two fly around the universe. Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, and Jessica Cruz can all exist in the same universe in my opinion, and they consistently have. They just need to be spread out a bit, and I would remove Simon Baz as he's not particularly popular and hasn't appeared in YEARS anyway. As for the "Rainbow Corps", that's in reference to there being seven different corps, but most of them are fairly inconsequential due to their size and/or power.
Chuck, I had a question for you but now I can't remember it! Gettin' old sucks! Maybe 45 minutes of the latest Chuck-O-Rama will kick the mule back on track. Have a good one!
I always thought that Chuck Dixon and Westlake had a similar flavor in their attention to logistics and specificities of process described in their writing. Also, the don’t write anything that’s boring 😂
I love the Sharpe's movies. (Where Sean Bean got is start.) Hakeswill did have some issues in his past that shaped him, but not enough to forgive him. And Pete Postlethwaite was perfect for the role. He also played a completely opposite type in Solomon Kane.
the rainbow corps are basically different colored lanterns for different emotions: blue for hope violet for love red for rage green for will, indigo for compassion orange for avarice and yellow for fear. they later added black for death and white for life.
Still subscribed. I equate Henry Silva to Robert Knepper, eg. his character of T-Bag from Prison Break. The graphic novel form of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road is going to be available in English in September, originally in French. Great moody artwork by Manu Larcenet. I understand that it got the blessings of Mr. McCarthy himself. (R.I.P. Mr. McCarthy)
I have always said, the dcu is to survive they need to do final frontier. Have all the heroes be in time period. Itd be a totally different feel to mcu, and we can get passed the gross grim dark that they keep trying to force on DC.
@laverdadescatolica5 exactly! You can do Batman beyond as close to blade runner as you can. Green lantern and Adam strange could be high flying buck Rodgers adventures. The question could be a straight up noir. It literally writes itself
Just picked up some of your Batman recently (great stuff btw) and was planning on getting your Nightwing and wanted to know if DC is giving you your proper pay on that stuff or if I should… um… “third party it”?
I started with The Hunter. It's fantastic! There is a Lee Marvin adaptation called Point Blank and a newer Mel Gibson adaptation called Payback. Payback has multiple versions but I believe the Durector's cut is better, but I can't quite remember.
Mr Dixon,I'd like to hear your opinion on the success of the-RIPPERVERSE-and all the comics being sold through Eric July's web-site.He's said his comics have sold 150,000 comics in 2 years.
Thankfully most of Westlake's books are on kindle now, so you can actually read them. Trying to get them in print is extremely difficult and costly. I did not like Lonesome Dove nearly as much as so many seem to, because it was a deconstruction of the old west, a cynical attack on all the themes and concepts of the things people love about the western.
I've never understood how we moved from the more traditional understanding of a multiverse to Spiderverse nonsense. If Spider-Man can be anyone then who cares about Spider-Man?
on spider-man...bah...every era has it own. I've no problem heaping praise on Dikto era spidey, and did since I first got to read it (early 80's)...but it's hilarious how much people seem to favour XYZ & piss on ABC with spidey. NOPE. Indeed Ditko & Lee made the greatest rogues gallery, but the Lee/Romita era started strong with Rhino, Shocker, Kingpin. Lesser villains were solid in both eras too. I think it's an unfair thing to compare, as NO-ONE IN COMIC BOOKS EVER DID AS GOOD for villains as Lee/Ditko in the same span of time. No where, no genre, no time, never. So...Romita/Lee run is not as great re: villains? neither is any other run anywhere, any time, any characters. Also problematic: when u admit not reading them & then passing judgement. Appreciate the loyalty &/or principal as sentiments, but it's a fail in practice
You beat me to it. The Lee, Romita, and Kane era was the most important era. It defined the real Spider-Man. I'm tired of the overrating of Ditko Spider-Man. It's fun but primitive. He wanted Spider-Man to be purple and orange. (Ditko Dr. Strange is cool though.) Many of the Ditko villains aren't very cool and less cool than the three you mentioned. Killing off Osborn and Gwen was a huge mistake. I wrote more in my main comment.
Killing off Osborn and Gwen was a huge mistake. They showed Osborn could be a cool villain when they brought him back, and Gwen was far superior to MJ. Lee and Romita created Kingpin, Rhino, and Shocker who are cool, and Vulture, Electro, Chameleon, Lizard, and Scorpion aren't very cool. The overrating of the Ditko/mostly high school era harmed Spider-Man through the movies etc. The Lee, Romita, and Kane era made Spider-Man cool. This is the real Spider-Man, my Spider-Man. Much of the genre deconstruction came from Stan. It was in many of the Marvel books, including FF, Spider-Man, Hulk, DD, and X-Men. Lee's 80s Silver Surfer story (Parable) and Ravage series shows he had this sensibility.
I think the only interesting Green Lantern arc in my lifetime was Marz making Kyle Raynor THE GL and deleting the rest of the Corps and replacing Hal with a more interesting character that didn't have decades of bad stories.
well, they made Hal a full on failure & mega villain when i was in my late teens. HE IS THE FAILED LANTERN. There is no coming back from it, retcon parallax or whatever all u like. LOL at Chuck, there is indeed a rainbow of lanterns now, and the character probably only exists still due them & their author Geoff Johns. Green lanternis not my cup of tea & never was, the character, but i can appreciate it/respect it. John Stewart made a solid impression via the animated universe. I eventually was ok with Raynor in JL comics.

Darwyn got taken from us way too soon. Fuck cancer.
Just wanted to say I completely agree with your take on Ditko, and his influence on Spidey. Thanks, Chuck!
The Lee, Romita, and Kane era was much better and more important.
I get so much out of these Q&A videos. Thanks, Chuck.
Glad you like them!
Captain Potato-Salad, when?😆😅🤣😂
This was literally the best 2-minute encapsulation of Spider-Man in those transition years that I've ever seen on UA-cam
The Lee, Romita, and Kane years were the defining years.
Thanks for another great video
Thanks for watching!

baz comes off very much as a self insert for johns himself
The In-Laws “Serpentine! Serpentine!”
Thank you for appreciating Crichton’s adaptation of his own book as much as I do. Great Train Robbery is all kinds of amazing in both formats.
Lawdog was excellent.
I’m patiently waiting for some type of trade ( since I lost the issues years ago ).
Chuck, I had a question for you but now I can't remember it! Gettin' old sucks! Maybe 45 minutes of the latest Chuck-O-Rama will kick the mule back on track. Have a good one!
Gats and Gittens!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chuck Dixon issues of Guy Gardener
Were amazing.

THAT is high praise indeed!

I have that pre-ordered!
@@Dixonverse Almost there.
thanks for the movie recommendations
You don’t remember the name of the oldest Cunningham child? 🤣🤣
It was Chuck.
Did you have to Google it?
No.
Joe Sinnott had a long run drawing stories for Treasure Chest.
Now I NEED to find some!!!
In fact, Joe was getting paid more by Treasure Chest than inking at Marvel and that’s why he inked FF 5 and didn’t come back for years.
I had no idea! Just picked some up on Ebay. Thanks for the knowledge!
Obadiah Hakeswell is my favorite villain.

@laverdadescatolica5 I agree with that.
Glad to see, as indicated from the video being uploaded on schedule, that you've been unaffected by tropical storm Debbie.
Hey Chuck! Voyage comics is reprinting collected volumes of Treasure Chest, fwiw, I don't know about relative price on old copies vs the collections.
Just picked up some of your Batman recently (great stuff btw) and was planning on getting your Nightwing and wanted to know if DC is giving you your proper pay on that stuff or if I should… um… “third party it”?
I receive royalties from all that. Thanks for the consideration!
Chuck, here's a question for you: If I've never read a Parker novel, which one should I read first?
I started with The Hunter. It's fantastic! There is a Lee Marvin adaptation called Point Blank and a newer Mel Gibson adaptation called Payback. Payback has multiple versions but I believe the Durector's cut is better, but I can't quite remember.
Do NOT read Butcher's Moon first. Save that ne till you've met all the recurring characters.

what was gold about the Looter?
I've never understood how we moved from the more traditional understanding of a multiverse to Spiderverse nonsense. If Spider-Man can be anyone then who cares about Spider-Man?
Hal is hated because he's a right wing hero. This goes back to Hard Traveling Heroes . So much for diversity of thought
They continued to damage him after Crisis.

I would argue Superman originally was kind of a deconstructionist, or at least genre bending, character.
I think the only interesting Green Lantern arc in my lifetime was Marz making Kyle Raynor THE GL and deleting the rest of the Corps and replacing Hal with a more interesting character that didn't have decades of bad stories.
