Brad, your thoughts on Collateral Beauty match mine almost exactly. I wasn't expecting much from the film, but the concept of being visited by embodiments of Love, Time, and Death was interesting in magical realist way. I had the fact that these people were actors spoiled for me by a review, but even that didn't prepare me for how mean-spirited and terrible this film is. And the twists at the end were absolutely ridiculous. I was in a somewhat full theater and the fact that people were actually moved by this...thing drove me absolutely bonkers. I usually stay for the credits out of respect for those who put their time and effort into the film, but I almost stormed out of the theater right when the credits started. Suicide Squad made me feel bewildered and frustrated; Collateral Beauty legitimately pissed me off.
MasterBerry Except for one problem: Gone With The Wind is not a story about the civil war. It is a romantic drama that happens to take place around the time to the civil war. The war going on is only a part of the plot. And it's still a great movie.
Love the Snob, but it's always good to see the man behind the mask. And learn that many of the Snob's opinions are how Brad feels about movies just turned up to 13.
Snyder and Co. simply don't GET Superman. They don't. They don't see the appeal of the character, their understanding of Batman seems based on fucking channel surfing by the tv-show in the 90's and good lord the rushing of the justice leagues introduction was horrible. Had I worked at Warner Bros. I would've looked at Man of Steel and Dark Knight Rises, Cut my losses, fired the fuck out of Snyder, Nolan and Goyer. THEN I would've waited a couple years for the right writer and the right director before giving Superman another shot.
Ankford I disagree. superman is more than just the boy scout image that most think he is. in the comics, he has an inferiority complex. always worrying about what's the best way to take a situation. worried about being seen as some kind of god. personally, I think they captured that very well. as for Batman, were we watching the same movie? they got him just right, from his paranoia to his guilt over the death of Jason Todd. during that time in the comics, his methods were getting more and more brutal because he was clouded by vengence, and I think they translated that very well. but, that's jus me.
For the record, Im one of the people who likes all you guys (even Dave). I always look forward to your reviews. Can't wait to see all the midnight screening reviews for this year.
So, when Brad said he could make fun of movies like Norm of the North and Nine Lives, yet had a hard time sitting through his #10, who else thought he was going to put Ratchet and Clank at #10? Because I remember he and Dave really tore into that movie when they saw it. I personally thought it was just okay, but that movie got pulverized by critics.
Who knows. Heck, I was surprised Dave put Central Intelligence and Lobster on the list (especially Lobster, that was #4 on my BEST Of list) over that one, because he didn't really care for it at all either.
You guys are the realest reviewers ever. I love your casual/relaxing review atmosphere and the tangents on life you guys go on. Its a great de-stresser after college/work. Thanks a bunch for everything and keep up the awesome reviews. You guys help me a lot with my depression and anxiety problems. I appreciate it. Also, its really cool that you watch Double Toasted as well. That'd be awesome if you guys collaborated on any future reviews.
the Lobster was actually probably one of my favorite films I saw this year, I thought it was really funny and fun for most of the movie, but its type of weird really jives with me and boy golly do I get why someone wouldn't enjoy it as much as I did.
1:09 would you say Gone With the Wind qualifies? Granted I haven't seen the entire movie, so the movie could've been more of a neutral look at the southern reaction to the civil war. But it still covered the southern perception with a tragic lense, and from what I remembered the folks of the south were the intended sympathetic protagonists that endure the effects of the civil war. In particular I remember a southern town filled with injured patients, the main woman yelling "Oh dem terrible Yankees!", and a bunch of happy slaves reassuring her with some like "Now don't you worry miss sally [or whatever the fuck her name was], we'll get dem Yankees for ya".
All right, I've got a comment about Sarah! I like her! And Dave! What? Expected me to be an asshole? Naw, I like you guys. And hey, anybody who joined me in not liking Passengers and summed up Collateral Beauty so I didn't have to see it to know it is shit? Deserves respect in my book.
love the midnight reviews and the yearly round up. Look forward to it every year. i dont leave comments usually, but had to after the end. Dave is great, don't know why people wouldn't like you. you guys are funny and entertaining. Thanks for sharing!
Speaking of spoilers, I watch these videos in a particular way. If I want to see a movie, I wait till after I've seen it to see how your opinions line up with mine. If I'm not sure, I'll watch the first few minutes, and only continue if I decide I don't want to to, or decide that I don't care about spoilers. Like, OK I'll see it, it looks better than I thought, but I font really scare about it. If I have no intention of ever watching it, I just watch the whole review without a second thought.
That's what I do with them and Redlettermedia's Half in the Bag. Unless the movie is complete crap (according to Rotten tomatoes or something), I hold off on reviews if I know I'll see it eventually or at least on spoilers even if I have no interest in it.
*Sees this video in subscription box* Now to see where 'Batman v. Superman' is ranked on Dave's list. NOTE: Please don't spoil the ranking in the comments. I want to see the video and find out for myself
1:06:44 Fun fact, the leader of the original "study" wasn't trying to say vaccines in general were bad / cause autism. He was trying to say the MMR vaccine was too much at once, to try and get his own multi-vaccine version of it a toehold in the market. Then he dug in his heels when people called him on his bullshit.
The Outlaw Josey Wales is a movie where Clint Eastwood plays a confederate soldier who is the hero, and he's pursued by Union red legs. that's the closest I can get.
I 100% agree with both of you that Hillary's America was the worst movie to come out of 2016. This is the most harmful piece of propaganda disguised as a documentary since Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. The only difference being that Expelled wasn't aimed at influencing an election entirely so that one very specific group of people would suffer. PS. You realize that because you put Batman v Superman on your lists, you are obligated to put one of the Marvel movies on this list, or else you are specifically anti-DC and will be boycotted by little bitches on Twitter right?
Outlaw of Josey Wales personal favorite is about a confederate survivor who is hunted for $5,000 by backstabbing Union general, he is the badass Clint Eastwood we all love with the best lines with a backstory that question the ethics of both sides
also Clint's group of soldiers surrendered peacefully only to be put on a line and got shot down. Little to no humanity to the north, but obviously there is a lot more than that, nor is it saying how the north is the devil but history is decided by the winners and the people in the war aren't polarized as the North are not all heroes while the south are not all monsters
I had this on in the background while I was working, and then I heard you guys talking about a 'Christopher Lamb-bear'... and then I realised, you're talking about Christopher Lambert, pronounced Lamb-Bert... Weird.
I liked BVS, but I get it. It stated fantastically and then it got gradually worse. The Batman scenes were the best, the ending was just terrible. Lex is like "Superman is a threat to humanity, so I'll create an even bigger threat that can't be reasoned with." That's the crap part of BVS, not freakin Martha.
Ann Nee It was, but it was dumb in execution. It was actually the first time I realized that indeed they have the same name. They could have done it differently, but the movie still should have been strictly about Batman versus Superman and just that.
I think that the idea of MARTHA was that it was the first time superman was humanised to bruce, and that he was seeing someone in his position all those years ago and he has an opportunity to stop it. But yeah, like you said, the execution was awful.
Statyk Elektricity I've heard this reason so many times but it doesn't seem right. Batman knows Superman saved people after man of steel, knew his alias, therefore knew he had salt of the earth parents. He even asks "Did your parents tell you you're special". Does a mother who's called Martha make you more human than all that?
Anthony Sanchez Really? They hypocritically criticize Hillary v.s. America as being propaganda but don't even point out that practically all mainstream media and Hollywood is heavily slanted to the left, yes even a large percentage Fox News ran by left-leaning Murdoch. The only true independent/conservative media anymore is available via radio/podcasts.
Slanted doesn't automatically mean bad. There's plenty of movies I've recommended that are made by conservative filmmakers. A good movie can still be a good movie even if there's still politics involved. And I'm hard pressed to think of a left leaning Hollywood film that equates consensual sex between conservatives with slave rape, which is something Hillary's America did. I'm aware that I'm saying this knowing full well you didn't actually listen to what we said, especially the part where we say propaganda doesn't automatically mean bad.
The worst movie I saw in 2016 was "Norm of the North" with Rob Schinder. "Nine Lives" with Kevin Spacey was pretty decent. It reminded me of "Jack Frost" (1998) with Micheal Keaton and the Tim Allen's Remake of "The Shaggy Dog" (2006).
Kayla Blair Colgan I did a search on Google and it said "Do you mean Rob Schneider?" but I didn't click on it because I thought who the hell would go to see a Rob Schneider movie? :)
The references to Norm of the North remind me of the Cursed Atuk Script, which had the same plot line word for word: Fish out of water, love interest, greedy manipulative real estate developer, almost the same movie. Rob Schneider had to change a few details in order to avoid the curse. Kinda reminds me of UA-cam’s algorithm nowadays.
Bats vs Sups ....All Warner had to do was just adapt the comic "Worlds Finest" into live action & Instant franchise starter....But No, we get Zack Snyders gloomy garbage instead.
It's because Warner Bros. were more concerned with using this as a setup for Justice League than telling a single, coherent story, because they were painfully aware that they were nearly a decade behind Marvel and needed to get to their big team-up movie as quickly as possible if they wanted to seriously compete with the dominating force in superhero movies. Honestly, they've screwed this whole cinematic universe up too much for it to be salvaged at this point, so they should just abandon it and start over from scratch. When only one movie in your whole series has generally positive reception, something has gone horribly wrong.
The protagonists are indeed southern, and the Union is definitely the looming threat throughout the movie, but to the movie’s credit, it gives plenty of criticism to the very flawed southern characters and their flawed, dying culture
lol no worries, I had such hopes for Hosers after Tusk. I love Tusk, but you're points on Hosers are indeed on point. Tusk had Long, Michael Park, Johnny Depp, and a solid modern Osment performance. Also a super surprise in Genesis Rodriguez who is really really good. And they were all real characters in ridiculous circumstances. Those actors were treated like cartoons upon their return. It bears the greatest resemblance to an episode of the Clerks animated series than anything.
I will never understand the hatred of suicide squad, I honestly came out of it thinking that it was a good movie, perfect? Hell no, I wouldn't even say it was great, but it was good, solid 6-7/10 for me, The plot was the biggest problem (probably due to behind the scenes meddling from WB) but despite that the characters completely saved it
thewaterguy17 I don't outright hate it, but I don't like it either. It's honestly a 4/10 for me. I didn't get a lot of enjoyment out of it asides from certain characters, plus it was an editing nightmare (and you can tell). Even then, I completely understand why people can like it. I just didn't.
I also loved it and think its one of the best of the year, but it TOTALLY get that it's not for everyone. not because people don't "get it", but because its execution is for a particular audience. My smartest friend hated the Lobster, and I totally get why
I still haven't seen it, but I've seen it on a number of both best and worst lists in the past few weeks. It seems to be a film that you either love or hate.
Kind of reminds me when Cloud Atlas came out and at the end of the year it was on people's worst and best list. The Lobster is just one of those films I guess, you'll either love it or you'll hate it
7:32: Awkward... 'Legend of Tarzan' is my favourite movie of 2016. I'm serious, I love it! So I guess that makes my taste in movies disastrous in your eyes. I can live with that though - I still love you guys and look forward to watching your videos!
Hey Dave, I'm calling you out. Read my shitty comment, I fucking dare you. ------- Go ahead. ------- Keep going. Both you and Sarah are awesome people, and I legitimately enjoy seeing you two with Brad, Brian, Irving or any of the rest of the Midnight Screenings crew when you review the films you just watched. I usually watch the videos just far enough to get a general idea of what the movie is like, and click off when it starts getting in depth so I'm not spoiled, but hilariously enough when it's either of you with Brad I tend to forget to do that even when it's a film I want to watch. A much belated congrats with Sophie, I'm sure you two will make for great parents (if not you two will at least be ones that aren't boring, certainly), and I hope the three of you have a great 2017. Also, in case Brad himself doesn't read this, tell him I say thanks for, among many other things, helping get Crystal Pepsi onto shelves again; I was always curious about the drink, but was just too young to ever get the chance of trying it (I tried _Crystal From Pepsi_ when I was three, and I remember hating it). Anywho, I hope you weren't too disappointed that this comment wasn't the piss boiling shitshow you were hoping, and I await to see your starring performance in Jesus, Bro! I'm out.
21:50 Only Number 8? The movie you devoted an hour and a half to only makes Number 8? Ooh, these are gonna hurt. 33:58 That film was perfect. It was a perfect example of how not to make a movie, and a fantastic primer on Bullshit Hollywood trends 101 1:00:55 I might compare it to one of those Joke birthday candles, because no matter how hard you blow on it, it keeps coming back, just as misguided. 1:09:10 ... _Birth of a Nation_ by D.W. Griffith? As for Wilson... yeeahh. A Klansman probably didn't jump out of the screen, but as crazy as he was towards the end, he might've hallucinated that. And he was a major-league white supremacist. If Trump is cantankerous orange grandpa racist, Wilson was, "Let's take Latin America from the mongrel races," racist.
Brad, your #1 wasn't clear-cut. I could easily see Voiceless, Vaxxed, and Hillary's America being your #1, even though only one of those you walked out on.
Thanks, guys I love hearing all your round ups of the worst and best of the year. And Dave should you happen to read this? I happen to like you and Sarah quite a bit personally, especially Sarah's humour, it's so fucking on the nose as is yours. I'd definitely buy you guys beers if I ever found myself in Springfield. And congrats on your baby too (I don't follow you guys in depth just now and again so forgive me) Happy New Year to you, Brad and co and here's waiting on your 10 worst for the end of 2017 :)
I hear ya, Dave-I didn't watch that many movies in 2016. The only one I saw that I didn't think was very good was Legend of Tarzan, and even then I consider it the best take on the character yet.
Most Civil War movies I know of are pro-Confederate: Birth of a Nation, Gods and Generals, Gone With the Wind off the top of my head. The only one that I remember being explicitly pro-Union is Glory
"For those who liked BvS... fuck you! You're wrong." Dave Dave, no offense, I like your reviews, but all I can say is; grow up. It's perfectly fine if you didn't like the movie, but insulting those who liked it's just immature and arrogant. When it comes to personal taste there's no "right" or "wrong". Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean that everybody in this world should do the same. That's the main reason I avoid converstations about comicbook movies today; there's no room for constructive debate anymore, just for a bunch of geeks, filled with ego, insulting each other for no good reason. Seriously... grow up.
Vid Šteh. I'm sure Dave was joking, but you can't believe how many people I've talked to who are like that and mean it. Comic book talk is getting almost as bad as politics! 😄
I hope you're right about Dave. As I said; I like his reviews, but sometimes he's acting a bit arrogant, especially with comic book movies. Maybe it's just an act, who knows. :) As for comic book talk; yeah, it's getting worse each year. Too bad people don't use their energy for something producitve.
+Vid Šteh. Right!? There more important things to discuss. Yeah I hope I'm right too, I've never known him to be hateful towards people unless they deserve it. I do wonder what's gonna happen with Justice League this year, I'm almost afraid.

Okay, now I've got to ask: What WOULD you say in the Midnight Screenings review of Gettysburg?
I'm still giggling at the idea of Brad posting offensive comments and Dave getting the channel banned in a flag thirsty rage.
"Like whether the earth is flat or not..."
And with that, Brad accidentally guessed the plot of "God's Not Dead In Space".
1:09:14 Would the 1915 version of Birth of a Nation count?
Ditto for Gone with the Wind.
MasterBerry Except for one problem: Gone With The Wind is not a story about the civil war. It is a romantic drama that happens to take place around the time to the civil war. The war going on is only a part of the plot. And it's still a great movie.
Shwah Gamers
Great is subjective. I thought it was a glorified soap opera.
Dave, the Andy Richter of the Internet
Love the Snob, but it's always good to see the man behind the mask. And learn that many of the Snob's opinions are how Brad feels about movies just turned up to 13.
Honestly I can't remember any classic movies where the North is the Hero. The South has 'Birth of a Nation', 'The General', 'Gone with the Wind'...
No one is asking Superman not to worry.
Stoned Gremlin Productions well, I don't know then. I thought it was handled pretty well, in the Ultimate Edition at least.
Christopher Nolan stated he didn't want to make a Superman movie.
Zack Snyder is the Frank Miller of film.
Dave, I don't watch a lot of videos you're in... but for your reporting tendencies regarding comments, you have my absolute love.
Can someone please timestamp each movie they list? thanks.
I personally thought it was just okay, but that movie got pulverized by critics.
trc2rockon Maybe he forgot it...
Religious and ’’anti-vaccination’’ movies… or : How to learn to sigh and lose fate in Humanity.
um Brad, do you have in a George Laraby ( however you spell it) Bond Shirt? where in the world did you find that?
the Lobster was actually probably one of my favorite films I saw this year, I thought it was really funny and fun for most of the movie, but its type of weird really jives with me and boy golly do I get why someone wouldn't enjoy it as much as I did.
Hearing them describe that "Moose Jaws" movie is really reminding me about that old Invader Zim episode "A Room with a Moose"
"Independence Day Resurgen--"
"That movie sucked." XD
What more is there to say?
love the midnight reviews and the yearly round up.
Hey, as for the Civil War movie thing... does Gone With The Wind count as South positive?
*Sees this video in subscription box*
Now to see where 'Batman v. Superman' is ranked on Dave's list.
NOTE: Please don't spoil the ranking in the comments. I want to see the video and find out for myself
Captain America: Civil War is #1!!!!
The movie you're searching for is Gone With the Wind. The South is the "good guy".
The Outlaw Josey Wales is a movie where Clint Eastwood plays a confederate soldier who is the hero, and he's pursued by Union red legs. that's the closest I can get.
that’s what i thought too! and i love that movie
Did anyone else get a Pureflix ad before this video?
I got Roots, but in French cause I'm in Quebec.
Ecclesia They probably already are, I mean. What else is there?
Ecclesia. I keep getting Split too.
Rachel Moon Nope. The only ad that exists is for Bye Bye Man. Anyone else getting backstreet boys stuck in their head over it?
+N1CK0FDEST1NY. I think you mean NSYNC. Bye Bye Bye!
Dammit! Now it's stuck in my head!
Dave's face during the description of voiceless is easily the best part of this
Kevin Smith should stop smoking pot???
I believe he should smoke MORE pot. That's the problem with Yoga Hosers.
I love the Brad and Dave combo for these videos. You two play so well off eachother
Goof's Not Dead 2 is the best film of 2018.
MadCap Productions As a matter of fact, yea! I thought it was a funny picture.
Man, Disney made Goofy's reboot kind of crazy, didn't they?
Alden martin If you are a theocratic idiot.
1:09:24 Gods and Generals (technically, i mean if you didnt fall asleep the plotline is about Stonewall Jackson)
At least we got Zootopia. That movie was awesome!
pytko3 Well, it did wear out the twist villain thing. Otherwise, yeah.
I had this on in the background while I was working, and then I heard you guys talking about a 'Christopher Lamb-bear'... and then I realised, you're talking about Christopher Lambert, pronounced Lamb-Bert... Weird.
collateral bullshit is my no. 1 worst movie of the year
You guys live in Springfield, MA? I live in Palmer.
Springfield, Illinois
whatever, know-it-all
@@theultimatechristinefan3782 Geez, dude. Rude much?
I liked BVS, but I get it. It stated fantastically and then it got gradually worse. The Batman scenes were the best, the ending was just terrible. Lex is like "Superman is a threat to humanity, so I'll create an even bigger threat that can't be reasoned with." That's the crap part of BVS, not freakin Martha.
Laurentiu Badea Martha might not have been the biggest problem, but it was still dumb.
Ann Nee It was, but it was dumb in execution. It was actually the first time I realized that indeed they have the same name. They could have done it differently, but the movie still should have been strictly about Batman versus Superman and just that.
Laurentiu Badea lex is basically the angry atheist that some Christians think all are
angry at superman (god) since his dad beat him
I think that the idea of MARTHA was that it was the first time superman was humanised to bruce, and that he was seeing someone in his position all those years ago and he has an opportunity to stop it.
Out of curiosity, was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 on your honorable mentions list? I remember you railing on that with Allison.
I like all of you. Just a random cheery comment :)
Dave is the reason I actually watch most of these. I think he's absolutely hilarious. Him and Brad play off of each other so well.
Well, the "Vaxxed" discussion continues to be interesting.
You guys are probably the most mature Liberals on UA-cam.
--Fellow Republican who likes your channel, and will continue to like.
Who's Rob Schinder? I looked him up on IMDB but nothing came up.
Harmony Jones I mean, Rob Schinder
Harmony Jones or the guy from "The Hot Chick" (2002).
Kayla Blair Colgan
I did a search on Google and it said "Do you mean Rob Schneider?" but I didn't click on it because I thought who the hell would go to see a Rob Schneider movie? :)
Harmony Jones yes. Whatever his name is. Stupid spell check.
How did these guys forget about the pureflix columbine movie? It was in theaters and is now up for a DVD preorder.
We didn't see it. It never came to Springfield.
Snobreview of Voiceless?
I like Zach Snyder he can be a good director but I agree his Batman v Superman, Man of Steel and Justice League movie were bad just flat out bad
What about the original Birth of a Nation? Or Gone with the Wind?
re: the Civil War
how about Gone With The Wind?
SavageGreywolf The war itself happens in the background of that movie. The story takes place over many years, and most of it is after the war ended.
The protagonists are indeed southern, and the Union is definitely the looming threat throughout the movie, but to the movie’s credit, it gives plenty of criticism to the very flawed southern characters and their flawed, dying culture
Would The Outlaw Josey Whales count as a Civil War movie where a Southern Hero is the central focus?
Yoga Hosers made your Wurst list?
also the word you're looking for is enabling.
Thanks, I remembered about 10 minutes after my brain fart lol.
lol no worries, I had such hopes for Hosers after Tusk.
Michael parks fighting in a walrus suit is cinema snob worthy lol
the general with buster Keaton
I'mBatmanHI to me that level of ridiculousness is such classic body horror, which I love, that I'm just with it. Cheering in fact.
I remember someone suggesting that Civil War should have had Ken Burns doing a VO for the trailer.
1:22:00 Oh, and Dinesh D'souza also had an affair.
That awkward moment when your favorite movie of the year is on Dave's worst of list...
Aaron Brooks ooh, which one?
The Lobster I loved it and don't think I'm smart...
-------
Go ahead.
-------
Keep going.
I'm out.
😒
21:50 Only Number 8? The movie you devoted an hour and a half to only makes Number 8? Ooh, these are gonna hurt.
33:58 That film was perfect. It was a perfect example of how not to make a movie, and a fantastic primer on Bullshit Hollywood trends 101
1:00:55 I might compare it to one of those Joke birthday candles, because no matter how hard you blow on it, it keeps coming back, just as misguided.
And congrats on your baby too (I don't follow you guys in depth just now and again so forgive me)
Happy New Year to you, Brad and co and here's waiting on your 10 worst for the end of 2017 :)
As a half-pretentious intellectual, fuck y'all, the lobster was great.
The rest of the list, I can get behind.
Screw the haters! I have being looking for this ever since the New Year. Best gift ever!
I am not 100% sure, but Gone With the Wind and Birth of a Nation are pretty pro Confederate.
I loved how Brad declared that Nick Sparks movies blend together.
You're an alright guy, Dave.
"For those who liked BvS... fuck you! You're wrong." Dave
Dave, no offense, I like your reviews, but all I can say is; grow up.
I do wonder what's gonna happen with Justice League this year, I'm almost afraid.
aaaaaaaaaaand bait taken :P
+Stoned Gremlin Productions. LOL!
Hey, Brad are you going to review God's Not Dead 2 as the Cinema Snob? I'd like to see another one. :)
Yay! Join the Dave Crusade on hateful commentors!
1:09:00 In "Abe Lincoln vs. The Zombies" the confederates help fight the zombies in the end of the movie when both sides come together. No joke.
