The IGFA’s Lifetime Achievement Award is reserved for those anglers, captains, guides, and manufacturers who have accomplished incredible angling feats, or have had a substantial impact on IGFA world records, Slam & Trophy Clubs, and other angling activities governed by IGFA rules, over the course of their lifetime.
This year the IGFA is recognizing one of the most iconic, influential, inspirational, and deserving anglers in the history of sport fishing - Mr. Raleigh Werking. For nearly 30 years, Werking has pursued the world’s top game - compiling an impressive 47 world records on species that include Pacific sailfish, roosterfish, dolphinfish, red drum, and a variety of salmon species. Werking’s first world record came in 1987 and his most recent in 2014. Perhaps one of Werking’s most impressive records came in 1992 when he set the men’s 2 kg (4 lb) line class record for Pacific sailfish with a 64.18 kg (141 lb 8 oz) fish. “Chasing world records is a true passion for me”, Werking states, “the whole process is exciting, fun, and challenging. When it comes to record fishing, nobody could enjoy it more than me, regardless of the outcome. I’ve caught fish I never should have caught, and lost fish that I never should have lost.”
In addition to his numerous world record catches, Werking has also consulted with several premier tackle companies and fishing resorts - lending his knowledge and expertise of the sport to help produce a better product or experience for recreational anglers around the world. Werking was a founding member of the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, and over his career has received several prominent awards for his contributions to sport fishing, including the IGFA’s Bob Herder Light Tackle Award, and the Safari Club International’s coveted CJ McElroy Award.
Over the past several decades, Werking has also been featured in a variety of freshwater and saltwater fishing magazines, and has made numerous guest appearances on popular outdoor shows including Larry Dahlberg’s The Hunt for Big Fish, North American Fisherman, Sportsman’s Challenge, and Guy Harvey’s Portraits of the Deep. The Miami Herald published an article on Raleigh in 1995, where outdoor writer Sue Cocking stated that “to call Raleigh Werking a light tackle fisherman would be like labeling Nolan Ryan as just another pitcher.”
The IGFA congratulates Raleigh Werking on this prestigious award and thanks him for the timeless contributions he has made to recreational angling over the course of his life.
