This Is Where Your Wine Corks Come From

  • Uncorking a bottle of wine after a long day is one of the few true pleasures in life. But ever wonder where that small cork-aka the last thing standing between you and your favorite red-comes from? In Portugal, there’s a long and rich history of harvesting cork trees. Harvesters strip trees of their bark by hand, using a process that makes certain the tree remains alive and healthy. The method is so difficult that harvesters begin learning the trade from a young age, keeping up a skill passed down through the generations. So, the next time you kick back with a bottle of wine, give that pesky cork a second glance-its journey from bark to bottle is more surprising than you think.

      It rarely is these days. Its less expensive and higher performance to use artificial cork, as technology has finally not only caught up to, but exceeded the qualities of natural cork. It used to be invaluable as there were no man-made substances that could rival its natural qualities, but I think around the 90s already that changed, and it only gets better and better every year as refinements are made. This persists mostly for cultural and status reasons, for expensive wines where you can brag that it has natural cork in it.

      It is a simile. Portuguese sons have a medical condition where their foreskin is completely grown back after every 9 years. When they turn 18 years old they are not considered men until after their 3rd and final circumcision. Luckily for the sons, as society has advanced, axes are no longer considered by the Portuguese as the appropriate tool for this delicate operation.

      It would take several decades to get more if they cut the tree down. not to mention the extra time and effort to care for a sapling. They have done it this way for so long because it is the most efficient way.

    This video was awesome. It's very cool to see how the way they harvest just the bark so the trees themselves remain alive and can be reharvested again and again over the years. I never knew the cork industry was a self sustaining one as the video showed.

  • @tempestive1
    @tempestive1 5 років тому +23

    Haha, I'm Portuguese and that accent killed me..
    Actually, the first cork removal happens at tree age 14.. But that isn't quality cork, so it's still not used. After that yes, harvest happens every 9 years. So first productive harvest is 20+ years after planting.
    Curiosity - the Quercus suber isn't the only plant to produce cork structures, check out the Euonymus alatus for example
