I bought this game on sale and went in completely blind. Ngl, like a lot of other people I was kind of expecting something spooky but I ended up super invested and crying at the end so I wasn't disappointed. I just choose to ignore the fact that once you've signed up for the military it's not as simple as saying "nah, nevermind" and running off with someone you love.
I think it speaks to the general unease of exploring alone, even in my small house, walking around can sometimes just feel a bit off, especially at night.
I saw it that they HAD to disappear BECAUSE of how hard it is to leave the defence forces (and of course their parents not being accepting of their relationship). With such a spontaneous change of mind, Lonnie only had the option of desertion.
Hope she enjoys her time in jail. She's officially gone AWOL. You cant do that without repercussions.

They don't usually actively search for soldiers who go awol, so as long as they don't get the attention of police or local gov, they could theoretically live somewhat off the grid without fear.

While running away may not have seemed like the best option, it might have been Sam's only choice at the time. There is no way her parents would have accepted it. Considering when they learned, they told her to leave the door open when Lonie was around. Basically, as long as Lonie was around, Sam wasn't allowed any privacy. Plus they blamed Lonie for Sam's grades being low. Whether that is true or not, I feel like the chances of that being accepted was slim.
With that in mind, I don't know if this is such a happily ever after with the parents. Sure, Terry's books were finally given recognition and their relationship has gotten better. Why would Katie come to a empty home if the parents were happy? It actually makes me worry for Sam. Are her parents going to try and stop her?
I've heard many stories lately, and what I feel will happen afterwards is Sam gets with Lonie and unless her parents accept it, she with go to low or no contact. She would keep in touch with Katie, but that's it. Is that extreme? Maybe, but I feel like even if they love Sam, the way the treated her love with girls was kinda toxic. Calling it a phase and all. I think unless they charge their thinking, they won't see Sam again.
I'm more of an optimistic person, so it sucks this came to mind first. But after everything I heard, I feel like if anything happened, it would be something close to this.
It was the 90s, LGBTQ was in a very bad position considering what Jeffrey Dahmer, Aileen Wuronos and John Wayne Gacy did.(I take a oppose nonviolent stance for the matter as I am a practicing Muslim and I cannot support their cause as it's against the creed however I have no need for irrational behavior to say no)

@@DuelTwilightChaser I was thinking about it too while listening to it. Plus it's pretty normal to not accept the other side too if the other side is a bad influence( i.e. doing drugs other bad stuff that isnt the sexual orientation.)
I'm not gay. My mother told me every time to leave the door open when I brought my girlfriend over. Also, it seems true that her bad school ethics was coming from Lonnie, seeing as her poor attendance and grades, only started to come after she was spending time with Lonnie.
I feel bad for Daniel really, was looked down by his one only friend had no friends, I wonder what became him after Sam apologized, really wish they went in depth with him a little more
The thing I loved about this game is that if you miss a single letter, everything changes. I did not find the letter of sam apologizing to daniel, so in my perspective, sam stole his game and throughout the game we see a bunch of letters from sams mom telling her daniel wants it back, even one saying he is coming to get it. So I was afraid, since he was a "weirdo", hed catch sam and lonnie together and get jealous, killing them or something like it
I can see Katy just figuring all this out and just stands in the entrance like “what the hell”
What about Katy? and her parents? I highly doubt that this story is as simple as it seems. Okay Sam decided to leave with her love and that is why she was not home but what about the parents? Why did Katty didn't see them in the house when she came back? My theory is that when Sam left the house the parents were so freaked out that they immediately try to search for her and that is why they were not home.
Weren't they at the couples retreat to fix their marriage?

From what I recall the mom was a forest ranger or something? I think she had something she had to go to.
@@prcervi they left for the retreat on the 3rd and Sam ran away on the 6th. They won’t return home until the 7th
they went camping for their anniversary. there was a note that said they were gone from the 3rd-7th, and I'm pretty sure the game is set on the 6th bc that's what kates boarding pass says
I really wanna see R do a video explaining Cube Escape by Rusty Lake. It's a well made mystery story puzzle game with confusing lore, and I think it will fit right in to GamerSault's content.

Oh man I remember playing this game and thought at the time it was a horror game and it did give me that anxiety feeling when you play it but the end, what a twist
especially since you hear footsteps upstairs. I thought there was a ghost or an intruder since no one was supposed to be home.
You should cover what remains of Edith finch! I love that game.

This game was my introduction to the concept of same-sex relationships and the idea that people could romantically love someone who was the same gender as them. It was surprisingly mind-blowing to me and something I had never considered outside of like the punchline to a joke (Like at the end of "Call Me Maybe" where the guy Carly Rae Jepsen's been crushing over was interested in one of her male bandmates instead of her). I felt so heartbroken when Sam told us about how her parents didn't support her feelings towards Lonie, and I was so happy I think I cried when the two ran away together. This game is just amazing.
im confused as to how lonnie has a fully intact service uniform despite having not shipped out to training yet. its also baffling how she got an infantry shoulder thing (im not sure what theyre called). and i think that might be an officer's uniform LOL.

@@michaelharmon8960 jrotc doesn't issue actual military uniforms. And i don't jrotc does not have anything to do with an actual commission, unlike actual ROTC

@@thememe986From what I’ve searched (I’m not American), they do issue a military uniform (either green or blue) that they wear once a week and are graded on to prepare for the Defence Force.

And yes, it's AWOL. She is a deserter. She signed up and was about to leave for basic.

It's probably already been said here, but Gone Home takes place in the same universe as Rapture Prime from BioShock One and Two.

@@snowiexxo You know the game Super Spitfire, that appears in Gone Home? It's created by Charles Milton Porter from the Minerva's Den DLC for BioShock II. As well, the same airline that Jack traveled with in BioShock I's logo appears in the game as well. Case and point, the developers of Gone Home were the same group of people who created Minerva's Den DLC (arguably the best storyline, when it comes to the games themselves).

I love how much stuff this game has for you to uncover. Something that I always found interesting is the relationship between Terrence and Oscar.
There's a height cart in the basement that end when terry is 12, along with toys and a safe which holds a letter that Oscar had sent his sister, begging for forgiveness.
I'm pretty sure we're meant to think that Oscar had a inappropriate relationship with Terrence and that was why he was pushed from the family. Not to mention that the height cart was next to a hidden passageway to the guest bedroom.
I guess you’re not wrong given the Gone Home wiki says no joke “Oscar molested his nephew Terry lol.”
Also in the safe is a bunch of morphine, a syringe, and a laxative. Just thought I’d mention that.
@@ErinLastNameRedacted I think Oscar overdosed on morphine because he knew he would never be forgiven for what he did to Terry. There was an apology to his sister about how he “wants to repent” but knows it’s to no avail - then there was the ouija board questions between Lonnie, Sam and Oscar where they asked what he wanted to do,and he responded with “COME BACK”. That’s just a theory though.

I just finished playing, It wasn’t the most fun I’ll admit but I gotta give props to the developers for the attention to detail and an interesting story.
This is not a bad game at all, it's just not...like Firewatch, it implies something more might be going on from the start, that the mystery might have some kind of big spooky payoff, and instead it's, parents are mean bastiches, and did a very not nice thing to their daughter over her choice of partners...I am trying to avoid saying anything that might have a negative impact on the vid's algorithms.
Anyway, the payoff at the end was just kind of meh to me, and the controversy around it getting 10s from so many outlets REALLY made it seem more important than it was.
Then they did a much cooler thing in Tacoma, which was better designed, more interesting setting, and with some visual flair that was just fantastic. Loved the ending there myself, much as some people call it a cop out, I think it fits with the Three Laws they were going for, and especially with the references to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Sadly, that one failed to pick up the controversy label, and didn't do as well, but I still recommend it as a good locked room mystery story.

Did you not notice how Terry was awkward at Thanksgiving? The last time he was at that house was during Thanksgiving.... when Uncle Oscar drugged and abused Terry. Or how Terry keeps writing about going back in time to the 60s to prevent an assassination... that happened around that same age.

So katies sister Sam runs off with her to be military Girlfriend towards an uncertain future in which considering her job they probably won't have much time to spend together (in the forseeable future) doesn't really seem like a good ending to me just like a really open ended one with lots left to question. It kinda leaves you hanging.
Plus man they really kinda screwed katie over with the fact that no ones home.
Oh yeah and cherry on top if i remember correctly Lonnie deserted no? If that's the case good luck ever finding a job if she doesn't get straigh up arrested. Anyways if that's the case Sam is looking towards a very bleak future.

Yeah, the story is decent , but like you could have just read all the documents online , the game itself is really … just walking in the house , literally doing nothing . As a video game , the level design is really bad .
Utter garbage opinion. "Walking simulator" - tell me you missed the point without saying it. This game has so many little moments that must have gone over your head. Like how picking up the crucifix makes the bulb go out, how the ambient noise makes it spooky as heck, on purpose to make you think there is ghost shenanigans going on, only to find out that's not it at all. With all the hidden passages and moving panels it's meant to have a front of "ghost game" but the true theme is "the 90s were absolutely awful to gay people". There are also 100s of bloody bibles, a ton of Christian paraphernalia and a conversion therapy camp article. The whole point of this game was that "horror" doesn't have to be blood on the bathtub. It's a wife planning to seduce a younger coworker, who uses her to get brilliant reviews before popping the fact that he's engaged with a wedding invite. It's a father turning to drink because his career and marriage is tanking, which probably weighed more because of an overachieving and overbearing father. It can be being gay in the 60s, being isolated by your family till you died (Oliver). It can be coming home to find your entire family collapsing around you.
If you don't like psychological puzzle games, don't download them.
I also like the sister dynamic you sense as you explore. Katy is this high achieving golden child while Sam is struggling to fit into the box her parents expect her mold to.

The plot of this game really reminds of "Silent Hill Homecoming".
i don't mean to be that person but Sam's parents didn't love and support her when she came out, they only loved their idea of who their daughter should be. That's conditional love she was almost given no choice, why stay somewhere you won't be loved or taken seriously as you are, not who people want you to be.
Sam legit murdered her family for her own prerogative and Katie is left to deal with the pieces of her selfishness
I found this game so dissapointing. I did not care that the sister ran away with her love interest. It made it seemed it was going to be more interesting and everything was so boring and such a let down. I guess I am used to action horror non stop games and this one comes along and it was just to bland.

Damn, I loved this game. No supernatural stuff but even for someone who isn't gay, this game waa relatable especially given the times growing up. I always wanted the developers to make another game similar but way longer.
I finally played this game and tbh kinda disappointed at how basic and cliche the story actually is. Probably in 2013 the story offers something new but playing it a decade later when lgbtq representation in the media is already very complex and widely discussed, this game is sooo corny, like soap opera corny, but it's still a good short experience overall.

Not a very based take with Lonie and Sam try and think of it from a perspective of you only getting a small percentage of their life and her mom only being dismissive. Having your mother refuse your love and identity sometimes even going out of their way to prevent and call it a phase fucking hurts.

i remember when I played this after they snuck it into a pack of other games during a steam winter sale. The first thing I immediately thought when I saw some of the stuff for the sister was lesbian, then you get to the end and find out they both ran off together in a shitty hatchback and the only thing I could think of is how they are going to end up in a shitty domestic abuse situation in the car where they remain perpetually homeless, having to wipe themselves down with clean wipes or try and bath in a truck stop bathroom inbetween eating shitty fastfood and trying to find out how to scrape up a few dollars for their next cheese burger, all the while the stronger one abuses the smaller one.
Man what the hell is wrong with you. Where tf this dumbass leap of logic even come from. For all you know they got to a city, sold the car and got a nice little apartment.
