  • I attempt to breathe new life into a neglected British Seagull outboard motor that has been sitting idle for many years. Two-stroke engines like this have a unique charm and history, and it's always a rewarding challenge to see if we can coax them back into action. Watch as I go through the process of trying to get this vintage outboard started once again!
    Thanks for watching!

Great video and I'm astounded that you didn't have any seized nuts or bolts! Thanks for not calling it a 'farty plus'... lol (you know who I mean!)

That's a bummer. I'd say if you ever dived down and retrieved it'll probably still work 😉

What you have is a British seagull SJP 40+ with a very desirable Long Range fuel tank. I own five British Seagulls. They are very dependable and often used as an auxiliary engine on sailboats.

Even modern outboards typically don't have air filters. The water does a good job of keeping the dust down, so they're not really needed. That being said, it can't hurt to add one!

That's good to know because, the little air filter fell off into the abyss on the last boat trip 😅

      Takeoff that filter!
      1, it looks awful
      2, it is not required
3, to stop a Seagull, (if I remember correctly) you throttle back and place your hand over the air intake. It has no emergency ignition cut off, perhaps it is worth making one.

Wym? It looks radical. Probobly adds another 2hp at least. Pimped up seagull, classic. 😎

They never die they just need a bit of TLC.
About 20 years ago we were holidaying in a Gite in the Normandy region inland from the invasion beaches. While chatting to the owner in his barn I notice a pile of Seagulls, maybe 8 or 10 of them, stacked in the corner all in various stages of disrepair.
I asked where they had come from and was told his Grandfather had collected them.
Was he an avid collector of old British outboards? No, it's just that they were what he'd dug up from the beach in 1946 . . .
How many? Oh, about a hundred, most which he'd refurbished and sold on to local fishermen.

What a fantastic story! Thanks for sharing. It's amazing how these Seagulls have such resilience and history, even making their way back into use decades later. Seagulls really do just need a bit of TLC to keep them running!

I got the coil from Sheridan Marine. They're a crowd in Oxfordshire UK. They do a good bit of stuff.
