Tabby's Star: Berkeley investigates mysterious star

  • Tabby's star has provoked so much excitement, with speculation that it hosts a highly advanced civilization capable of building orbiting megastructures to capture the star's energy, that UC Berkeley's Breakthrough Listen project is devoting hours of time on the Green Bank radio telescope to see if they can detect any signals from intelligent extraterrestrials.
    Breakthrough Listen, which was created last year with $100 million in funding from the Breakthrough Prize Foundation and its founder, internet investor Yuri Milner, won't be the first to search for intelligent life around this star.
    "Everyone, every SETI program telescope, I mean every astronomer that has any kind of telescope in any wavelength that can see Tabby star has looked at it," said Andrew Siemion, director of the Berkeley SETI Research Center and of Breakthrough Listen. "It's been looked at with Hubble, it's been looked at with Keck, it's been looked at in the infrared and radio and high energy, and every possible thing you can imagine, including a whole range of SETI experiments. Nothing has been found."
    While he and his colleagues are skeptical that the star's unique behavior is a sign of an advanced civilization, they can't not take a look.
    The observations are scheduled for eight hours per night for three consecutive nights, starting Wednesday evening, Oct. 26. Siemion and two colleagues, , are traveling to the Green Bank Observatory in rural West Virginia to work with a new and more sensitive instrument recently installed on the telescope.
    "The Green Bank telescope is the largest fully steerable radio telescope on the planet, and it's the largest most sensitive telescope that's capable of looking at Tabby star given its position in the sky," he said. "We've deployed a fantastic new SETI instrument that connects to that telescope, that can look at many gigahertz of bandwidth simultaneously and many, many billions of different radio channels all at the same time so we can explore the radio spectrum very, very quickly."
    The results of their observations will not be known for more than a month, because of the data analysis required to pick out patterns in the radio emissions from the region around the star.
    First reported a year ago by Yale astronomer Tabitha Boyajian, Tabby's star - more properly called KIC 8462852 - had been flagged by citizen scientists because of its unusual pattern of dimming. These volunteers were looking at planets as part of the internet project Planet Hunter, which allows the public to search for planets around other stars in data taken by the Kepler spacecraft, which has been monitoring 150,000 stars for regular dimming that might indicate a planet had passed in front of it.
    But while most such dimming by transiting planets is brief, regular and blocks just a few percent or less of the light of the star, Tabby's star dimmed for days at a time, by as much as 20 percent, and at irregular intervals.
    While Boyajian, now at Louisiana State University, speculated that the irregular dimming might be explained by a swarm of comets breaking up as it approached the star, subsequent observations show the star is far more irregular than a comet swarm would produce. In fact, it seems to have been dimming at a steady rate for the past.
    Speculation eventually arose that the dimming was caused by a Dyson structure: a massive orbiting array of solar collectors that physicist Freeman Dyson once proposed would be a natural thing for a civilization to build as it needed more and more energy to power it. Theoretically, such a structure could completely surround the star - what he termed a Dyson sphere - and capture nearly all the star's energy.
    How likely is that?
    "I don't think it's very likely - a one in a billion chance or something like that - but nevertheless, we're going to check it out," said Dan Werthimer, chief scientist at Berkeley SETI. "But I think that ET, if it's ever discovered, it might be something like that. It'll be some bizarre thing that somebody finds by accident ... that nobody expected, and then we look more carefully and we say, 'Hey, that's a civilization.'"

    Even in a worst case scenario, no intelligent life found, I feel proud to be a part of this generation, which, given the proper tools, is proving that man is capable of great accomplishments. Not only in cosmobiology, but in so many areas as well. As always, good science is like a filet with potatoes, it has no waste.

      Not finding extra-terestrial life is NOT the worst case scenario. Not finding additional stars with alike events is the worst case scenario.
      But I am optimistic, given JWST's launch.

    1:16 he said one in a billion. That's not that improbable when you're looking at that many stars at once.

    It is very likely a relatively new massive asteroid cloud that was formed by a multitude of planetary collisions that may have been caused by a passing gravitational source intersecting the system and throwing the system into disarray.

    i think its a close to type 2 civilization. The light we re seeing is taking how ever many light years it is away from us. So if it was a 3 million light years away it took 3 million light years to reach us. So in real time that civilization must have deep space travel

    could it be something that's actually light years away from Tabitha star passing between the star and our telescopes

    I have a question. If Tabby's star is 1,500 light years away, and there is an advanced civilization inhabiting or harnessing energy from a Dyson Sphere there? If they choose to send a signal, wouldn't they be sending a signal to earth as it appeared in 517 ce? Thanks in advance for any insight.

      Actually, I will not believe there are some aliens. if so, they already found us.

    • @geemanbmw
      @geemanbmw 2 роки тому +1

      Let's say they did send signals back then what good would we be to them. Even if they sent another one we are still no use to them. What you think we are smart enough to help them out now ? I don't think so and like the other commenter said if they are aliens they already know we are here but not technological ready yet to them since they are 1480 light years away and thousands of years more advanced then humans. And besides the new theory is it might me alien mining not a Dyson sphere which is more plausible.

    The thing about finding an intelligent species has got to be SO rare. Here's why.
    Earth has been around a couple billion years and the only intelligent species that earth has created is us out of billions of other species.

    the fourth kind are the makers and the 5th kind are the creators telling the makers what to do. the creators give the makers the tools to create atoms electrons and we are the their creations I had a dream that seemed real and this is what I was told by a black tall figure that had an over powering voice a voice that was so high pitched and loud that a whole planet could hear and he detailed who he was he said he was the 5th kind of his species and that they had created the universe and energy in it they observed the universe and what it created in it galaxies and even the big bang they are doing the same again the makers have their orders from the creators to repopulate the whole universe by harnessing all of the energy and using that energy as an explosive to wipe out the galaxies to recreate which is recycling energy

  • @godmayexist2836
    @godmayexist2836 7 років тому

    I will tell you why I no they are doing that because they have my idea quantum trapping energy and then quantum locking it in a sphere object because my idea for levitation quantum trapping and locking was combining 2 superfluids in 2 spheres and harnessing the energy of a superconductor that is at zero temperatures so that the superfluids would react to the superconductor and quantum lock in mid air

    Well with Berkeley investing this star, the results will probably be that it's "mother feminism" who came down from the cosmos to bestow her arm-pit hair upon all of humanity and tell them that women need to be in charge.
