The city of Philadelphia should be ashamed of itself for not honoring the great Joe Frazier during his lifetime. It not only didn't honor him but totally and (I assume intentionally) disrespected him by, instead, honoring Sylvester Stallone and the fictitious movie character Rocky Balboa that Stallone portrayed in the Rocky series. If Joe was Italian-American instead African-American, you bet the slimy politicos (think Frank Rizzo) that ran the city of Philadelphia for years would have placed his statue right in front of City Hall for all to see. Disgusting !

I met Joe in Magnolia Nj in 1993-94 at a Getty gas station early in the morning he drove up in a Cadillac and asked me directions to a Baptist Church I told him it was down the street on the right, he shook my hand(ouch) AND SAID GOD BLESS YOU ,I knew who he was but I wasn't that kinda kid to bother him I respected him HE WAS BIGGER THAN MY LIFE and that MEMORY LIVES WITH ME NOW AND FOREVER. Sometime in the late 80's my grandmother in ROXBOROUGH MEMORIAL HOSPITAL she got me Marvis 's autograph on a food menu personally to me after a fight I guess that he had to stay in a hospital overnight in philly .awesome memories of a sweet family !Thank you Fraziers for what you gave us Sports fans!!!!God Bless

I would come to see this tribute statue before I go see some silly fictional statue of Sylvester Stallone pretending to be a boxer.

This was long over due. I am relieved more than anything else, that Philadelphia does really appreciate it's finest son. A real legend, a truly great man. I'm from the UK and not at all star struck, but if I had been given the opportunity to meet any person I wanted in the whole world, it would have been this man, smokin Joe Frazier. My absolute hero as I was growing up, a real inspiration. RIP smokin Joe Frazier.

this statue is a step forward in honouring and I'm so happy cos it feels like people r finally realising and appreciating joes legacy of one greatest heavyweights and his devotion to his community but this statue should have been made years ago and more needs to be done in honouring Frazier as he is the PRIDE AND HEART OF PHILLY who the city should hail and give so much back to him cos he gave so much to the city

Everybody is right that it is a disgrace to have a statue of Rocky, but not have a statue of the real life Rocky, Joe Frazier. However, what people don't realize is the City of Philadelphia did not pay for that Rocky statue. Sylvester Stallone did. It was a movie prop in Rocky 3. Then, after the movie was finished filming, he donated it to the City as a gift. So it's not like the City of Philadelphia commissioned a statue of Sylvester Stallone. However, they should have commissioned this statue of Joe Frazier a long time ago.
Joe Frazier used to actually work in a slaughterhouse punching slabs of meat as Sylvester Stallone did in the movie. He used to train by taking runs through Fairmont Park, and work on his legs by running up and down the steps of the Philadelphia museum of art, again just like Rocky did in the movie. Joe Frazier was the real life Rocky, just as Muhammad Ali was the real life Apollo Creed.
On March 8th, 1971, 26-0 WBA / WBC World Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier defeated 31-0 lineal Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali to become the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World. It was The Fight of the Century & the most famous sporting and entertainment event in the history of the world.

Statues and Halls of Fame are political. When you have the TRUTH ON YOUR SIDE it does not matter. People know how talented Joe was, he had heart, courage, a massive left hook, and a motor that never ended!

Philly should quite frankly be ashamed of itself. You have a statute of a white Italian guy who actually never existed but one of your finest has little to nothing.Joe was a great guy.Just don’t be dumb enough to challenge him in a ring.Outside of that mayhem joe was completely and totally admirable and likable to ANYONE.
