    I would have loved these as a kid. I had many of the soldiers, and I still remember the unique smell of a new box of soldiers. It was a mix of the cardboard combined with the plastic of the soldiers.

    I had that set when I was 12. I spent hours in the October school break in 1977 using it to play out the Arnhem fight from A Bridge Too Far. Annuals laid out for the bridge and pill boxes either end. Brilliant fun.

    Yeah. There were some sets like that that had very well made toy soldiers. Me and my Brother had a lot of fun with those when we were kids. I had this one guy with a Thompson that was "Me".
    As we got older - we graduated to Model Kits but those were a lot more fragile. That didn't stop us from playing with them - but they broke a lot and had to be repaired.
    The last thing I did with one of those hard plastic toys - was a German Officer. I made a coat for him out of masking tape and painted it all up - then I put him in the cupola of this model of a Mk. V I had. Looked fairly good ... to me at last ... Ha! Ha!

    Remember these sets as a kid but unfortunately never had the money to buy either. Owned the figures and several of the Airfix buildings such as the Checkpoint and Bamboo House in this scale but Matchbox sets very rare in the UK these days. Managed to get several sets of Matchbox figures sealed in 1/72nd scale from China and that's about it. Great video, has reminded to start searching for them.

    I was about 8 when I found this in a hardware store and my dad bought it for me. Hours and hours of fun using the British Paratroopers to attack not only the house but the Navarone playset I got at a yard sale. I truly miss those days.

      I hear you, when I was 12 in 2001 my dad threw away my 1993 PC and all the floppy games that went with it. I had all the classic pixel games on them. I came home from school to go and switch on my old PC, to find a gaping hole where my computer used to be. When he told me what he had done I went BERSERK!!!!!!!!!!!!! I too have fond memories of the good old days back in the 90's and early 00's. Today is all about fantasy and feel good, I much prefer watching Battle of the bulge or where eagles dare then bloody Harry Potter or some silly Zelda film or warcraft!

    That bombed out house looks the same model as the one featured in the D-Day Battlefront Diorama. My elder brother built coountless military models and kits when he was younger, I think I've still got many of them including bits of that diorama in a box somewhere in the loft.

    This looks amazing. Maybe I am not normal? I was not drawn to these Combat Sets in the same way as I was their 1:72 counterparts when I was a child. Much as I did buy 1:32nd Scale occasionally, this was governed by availability (Or lack thereof). Almost exclusively, my friends and I had massive battles in the Airfix HO/OO range. Upon watching this, I still got that warm, fuzzy nostalgic feeling. Perhaps I am missing old friends and simply remembering good times. Could it be that the toys didn't matter to us, as much as our friends did?... Nah. It's Airfix all the way down.
    Thank you for this wonderful episode, I bloody-loved it. Cheers.

    I love Airfix kits, I have a shop at the end of my road that sells them, I'm taking my American friend there sometime soon. I also collect army men and police figurines. I also have a security figure, because some security guards are trained by special forces and carry weapons! I have a couple of war ships and a Roman legionary soldier by Airfix too! What I love about Airfix is their all based on historical artifacts and people, not sci fi and fantasy. I never enjoyed sci fi. Warhammer is entirely made up, and even some of their stuff is based on Gothic architecture, I'm sorry but I prefer real life over fantasy any day of the weak! I was always seen as an odd ball as a kid because I developed my own interests rather than going with everybody else, it was all elves and harry potter when I was at secondary school, when I was a teen I went to a boarding school and most of the boys there were into warhammer, not really my thing, who ever though of "wood elves" or "melter cannons?" I'm sorry but a history book is far better then a comic book or fantasy saga! Yet I'm the one conciderd a nerd for collecting army men and not pokemon cards! Who the hell are they to judge me? Kelly's heroes beats the crap out of Avatar! the only sci fi I like is old classics like Logans run or Tron, I'm old school!

      When she was still with us, our Nan used to work at Airfix in the 1970s. We had just about every Airfix model and toy they ever made. I agree with you that models based on real life are better because they are also educational.

    • @ronaldmcdonald8303
      @ronaldmcdonald8303 7 місяців тому +2

      @@jjs3287 Yes, thank you. I love real life, so much more interesting and funny then anything artificial. Unfortunately that Arifix shop is now gone. People sometime rip me for liking real life, saying that fantasy is more fun. There is plenty of cool stuff about history, Nero, Cyrus the great, the America civil war, Saladin and Richard the lion heart. Ever since I can remember, I've ben different, whilst everyone else was playing dungeons and dragons, I was reading horrible histories or watching things like Kelly's heroes. I've always formed my own opinions and taste, rather then just parroting what everyone else is into or believe!

    It doesn't actually seem very balanced. Tank vs Armoured car. I guess they are just scenery though if you are going to play pill box war.
    It was even worse with the 1/72 assault sets. I used to love the pontoon bridge set but the poor Germans got the bridge and sandbags and the allies 2 tanks a self propelled gun and a amphibious vehicle.
