Louise Fletcher is one of those actors exceedingly good at playing characters you just love to hate. But every time I’ve seen her do interviews, she’s always so warm and outgoing. An exceptional actress.

Her portrayal of Kai Winn on DS9 is INCREDIBLE! She's one my favourite television villain!

She has a charismatic calmness about her. The interviewer is full of a nervous energy and she maintains an effortless stillness.

Maybe it came about from her growing up with two deaf parents -- she had to acquire speech and learn to use her voice on her own. This gave rise to her incredible vocal control, which she uses to great effect especially as Ratched and Wynn, which though years apart contain a certain brittle vulnerability while still making the characters maddening. For these characters, she speaks directly on the lower register break in her voice, between chest voice and normal speech range, which prevents her from projecting without her voice flipping back and forth between the break and her head voice. Many women get this sound when they're upset, and it makes them seem out of control emotionally because of the lack of consistent pitch and timbre. It is fascinating here to hear her with a big, resonant stage thespian sound and abundant chest voice, which she never uses as Wynn particularly. Brava! Live long, Miss Fletcher, and keep being naughty!

She is anciently old, and an absolutely brilliant actress. I would put her as the best actress of the last three centuries. In spite of her extremely advanced age, she remains a talented and brilliant force. Her contributions to the art are still being practiced and taught. Actors who are much, much younger can still find inspiration in her many fine performances. A truly classy and distinguished lady .

When a character is so evil that you can’t help but hate them, you know that the actor in question did a very fine job of doing it. Miss Fletcher, you did that role exceptionally.

Exactly. This character. And now Meryl Streeps character in "Big Little Lies" are two of the most hated characters in history.

I always found her very attractive in her younger days.

I saw Brainstorm at around 12 years old, in the theater. That day I found out what terror was. I didn't know movies could do that to the viewer. I had never been so scared in my life. And a big part of it was Fletcher's death scene and the subsequent visuals that depicted the release of her spirit from the flesh. The toxic tapes being played were even scarier. I had to just look down at the floor at times because it was just sensory overload. Ever since, this lady has sort of given me the creeps. It's not your fault Louise. You are just too damn great an actress.

I remember seeing her on Shameless, and I didn't think she could possibly portray any role other than that, then I saw the OFOTCN. God bless.

Can I have my cigarettes, Nurse Ratched?
    Heh heh.
Louise was phenomenal in that role.
Same with Flowers In The Attic.

How the heck. I just remember her as the evil grandma from Flowers In The Attic. I think that's my favourite movie with her. She did a perfect job back then.

What happened to Louise Fletcher has also happened to many other actors/actresses such as Linda Blair being another good example. There are certain roles in movies that get stuck in many peoples minds and it becomes almost impossible to separate the person in real life from the person in the movie. In the case of Louise Fletcher it was Nurse Ratched and Linda Blair it was Reagan in The Exorcist. The good news is these actors/actresses become well known and the movie doe's good but the bad news is it becomes harder to move to other projects because they are so associated with that particular role. A blessing and a curse at the same time.

Louise Fletcher was a fine lady in real life. I’m not going to say her Nurse Ratched character was a bad persona, just a hot mess that had some serious emotional issues. And the ever rebellious and lively McMurtry snapped when she wanted to put an unpleasant situation out of place and insist the patients go on with their routine.
