I was watching forged in fire and I saw a smith that looked familiar. I didn't realize it was you until you got back to your home forge and I saw the stairs behind you. I got real excited to see one of my favorite smith's on UA-cam. You do a great job and really enjoy your video's.

I know right, I've watched flatter videos before. And even if he cut more time from the videos than other people, watching his sledge hammer move metal was nuts. We need something for size comparison. I reckon he's 20 foot tall lol
If everybody was as strong as John we wouldn't have needed the industrial revolution lol.

I’m 6’2” the handles on striking hammers are cut shorter than normal sledges. About 20-22 inches or so. Makes it easier to swing faster and more accurately
jetblackstar he’s actually 21 1/2 feet tall. You may use me in the claw hammer video for comparison. I’m easily 19 feet tall Hahahaha!

Tools do not make the man, the man makes the tools. Whom is to say what method works better than the other until it is set into practice unto that individual.
I noticed that you quench in water instead of oil. Have you got a reason for that. Hardening and tempering have been a mystery to me and I’d like to get a grasp on it.
Robert Carmody 1045 is a water quench steel.
The quenching medium of a steel depends mostly on the carbon content. Some other alloys effect it a little bit but carbon is the biggest factor. Higher carbon steels quench in oil. 1045 is a medium carbon steel. Doesn’t harden as hard if that makes sense. So water is the correct quenching medium. Fresh martensite can still brittle so tempering is still required (there are some exceptions) other steels like h13 and s7. Which have carbon contents not that different than a high carbon blade steel have high degrees of other alloying elements that make them air hardening.

Love the true hand forged work and no criticism intended. But you gotta get an old log splitter for a press, just because it’s cheap to obtain and modify for forging. Your a big guy but it’s gotta get old and tiring swinging that huge hammer lol. I’m sure your like myself and can’t or don’t want to spend $5,000+ for a power hammer.

Don’t really have the space for a power hammer as the ceilings in my shop are only about 8 feet. A press would be quieter also and with my location noise can sometimes be a concern.
Oh I understand that. That’s exactly why I haven’t attempted to build a power hammer. I do my best to respect my neighbors. Even took the gas engine off the press and installed an electric motor.
