Can I make a flatter in ONE HEAT?

- I challenged myself this week to make a blacksmith flatter in one heat under the power hammer. This is my second time taking on the one heat challenge where I have just one heat to forge the project either at the anvil or under the power hammer. The flatter is used for smoothing forge work out by placing it on top of the hot steel and then striking the top of it with another hammer. A very useful tool to have in the blacksmithing shop.
My name is Timothy Dyck. I got hooked on blacksmithing when I was 13 years old. I quickly realized that in order to keep blacksmithing I needed money to buy costly supplies, so I started making small items and selling them at the local farmer markets. The farmer markets turned into craft shows and craft shows turned into custom projects. Right out of high school I had the opportunity to apprentice under a blacksmith, where I worked with him for four years. We did projects for some of the most prestigious houses around the rocky mountains and were apart of many large public sculptures. I learned many valuable lessons while working under his training, but the desire to set up my own shop and go out on my own was always something I dreamed about.
So in 2013 I started setting up my full time blacksmith shop out of BC, Canada making custom projects and products like railings, gates, lights, stairs, fences and all the many blacksmithing tools required to keep the blacksmithing shop running. I love what I do and this is my dream job. I enjoy showing you what's going on in the blacksmith shop through the lens of a camera and would love to have you along for the ride as I live out my dream of being a blacksmith in the 21st century.

So funny how I felt like I was holding my breath the whole time waiting to see it you would make it. Of course, you would. Great job Tim.
That is funny!! Thank you!
No words to praise you. You could teach many more experiences to helpful service of our Black smith works. Thank you.
Thank you!
That is impressive!!!! You have some serious control of that power hammer, shows how much work you've done with it 😊👍👍👍👍👍
Bravo
Nice work with the hammer, I would have done it with probably 2 heats to maintain the temperature but great work all around.
Great video, amazed that the steel can be hammered at such low Heat 👌
Thank you! Yep defiantly working it right to the end!
Great video, glad I found your channel
Thanks John, Appreciate what your doing with your channel as well!

Wow, Tim you are a true craftsman. Great channel
Thanks Dan!
Power hammer ninja strikes again!,Very fluid with your machine and great video material as always.
Thank you! Really appreciate your comment and I'm slowly getting better at working with the power hammer!
Dude, sprinkling the release agent with your hand a good way to lose it, use a spoon with a loooong handle! Seriously impressed with both hammer and flatter turning out looking almost machined if it wasn't for the scale coating, very well done 🤔❗❤️👍
Really well done. I'm enjoying your channel a lot. Bob Bergman
Thank you Bob appreciate it!
I was panicking (is that a word?) by the end. So fun to watch.
Thank you!! I was panicking too! :P
You did it, that is for certain, but honestly, I don't think it is good for tool steel to be forged under forging temperature. If I had to choose one made in one heat or one made in 2 or 3 I would always choose the one made on the proper forging temperature. It is a really good job, I am just a bit worried about some microcracks.
Damn nice one heat or not! Impressed. Not easy to do.
Thank you!
good job 💪
Awesome !!
thanks for sharing, love your channel, keep the good stuff comming!!
Your very welcome! I'll do my best!

New to the channel! Nice work! Excited to see your other videos!
Awesome! Welcome here!
@@TimothyDyck thank you sir! You were recommended by my good friend Allen over at Rusty Hubcap Forge.
Very cool, I don't know Allen, but appreciate the referral! :)
Hell yeah man
😁
$100+ flatter in 5 minutes, lol that's some good wages... Great show sir.
If only... 😐
Satisfying
That moment someone does something in a 5 minute video when I have yet to do it in a day.
No. Damn. Way. 😲 Hats off Timothy, hats off. Making tools that fast is like a gold mine 😂 How much force this airhammer is generating? 250 lbs? When it hit the stopper I almost felt it's power and definately have heard...
Thanks!! I'm not to sure about the gold mine part... But I really enjoy challenging myself to work efficiently! The hammer is 100kg ram. I have to ease off when I start getting close to the kiss block (stopper) as if I hit it hard it can bounce loose!
@@TimothyDyck Wow, that's a beast 😲 Maybe some day I can afford one too 😊 Keep up your great work and I can't wait till next video. They're very enjoyable to watch.
Hey! Thanks! Appreciate the complement.
Super sweet! But I don’t see a payment option, so I’m unsure how I’m going to get it here in my shop? Please advise...
haha. Thanks I appreciate this! I'm not really planning on going into full swing with making these, but if you absolutely need one we can talk... :)
Timothy Dyck let’s talk... sean.the.shoer@gmail.com
This one stressed me out..lol..I wasn't sure you were gonna make it. But you nailed it..or hamerd it mayo flattered it ???
👏👏👏👏
Hello .I want to buy a power hammer for making pickaxe an axe very fast but I don't no what weight power hammer is good for me.can you help me?
I call dibbs on the flatener 😆
Very nice work but everybody doesn't have a hammer like that
Thank you! I understand that! The idea behind this challenge is to push yourself to be a better blacksmith, so no matter what you have dial it in! Whether thats with a cobbled together forge and rail road anvil, or a full blown blacksmithing shop. Good, better, best, never let it rest to the good is better and the better is best!! :)
Preach.
멋있다 나이스 korer 한국
Had to hit the 👍 667 alot better than the previous number.
I know it's copper
One heat, huh? Well, I can do it in like 59 heats. So beat that.
