I don't think there's any one answer. It is what it means to you and I personally think you live in a cabin that happens to be your home. I always refer to my tenant's vehicle as his car but it's a SUV. Some people say potato or po ta toe. You've really worked so hard in turning this place into your own and a more efficient place at that! I really admire your fortitude, drive and passion. You don't see that everyday and you should be very proud of yourself. I know I am of you!! I agree, living your lifestyle takes a tremendous amount of work. I can't even imagine how you get everything done in a day. Just cooking many things from scratch of preserving takes time and tending after my tenants but my hat really goes off to you. Lauri I have noticed a huge transformation since you did the food bank hauls! Please keep doing them! It's absolutely amazing to hear you so excited to have so much food! The shoutout was overdue! When I watch other people on UA-cam and they point at a shack made of pallets and say, lets go look inside the cabin, I never dwell on the "is that even a real cabin?" I mean who really cares! It's a cabin to them! Most people complaining about on grid/off grid aren't even living this life! But we all have opinions! 😁 I knew coming out here and living this life was going to be harder. That's exactly what I wanted. I choose to live more pioneer style but I don't fault one single person for having a microwave in their cabin! Running water is a hard thing to give up! I remember taking showers or baths in Colorado and I never even gave them a second thought. But here, I have to plan out my baths and I actually like that. And I love my new faucet and dry sinks! It's funny how everyone has a different concept of what's what. One man's cabin is another man's house?? My idea of a cabin is different from someone who lives in a big city and can't live without their microwave, espresso maker or big screen tv. Our cabin is very rustic. Sometimes I feel like I'm living in a storage shed! But it's comfortable and cozy when it's -40C! No water here either, except what we haul from the lake. Our power comes from our solar panels, which charge our battery bank. We also use a Yamaha generator to top off the batteries as the winter days are so short the panels don't always get enough sunshine.And when it's running, I take advantage and vacuum the rug. It's my only electric appliance here. Life is pretty basic, but we are content and make what improvements we can as we think of them. Our cabin is miles from any road, so everything gets hauled in by ATV or Skidoo, which does have a lot to do with any improvements we make. We somehow manage to get 1 bar of LTE cell signal. Enough to stay in touch with family, and in the winter we can even watch YT!
I am sure you have heard of a carpet sweeper. I’m over 70 from So. Calif. and we had a carpet sweeper for ever. The rest of your lack of power outage, yuck. I also lived in So. Ca. and had power outs I try my best to keep up. Also we lived in a Mormon area so stocking up was our mantra.

Yeah everyone see's things differently and that's cool with me. Even if someone wants to nicely explain what they think that's cool too. But the comments "Your not remote because ......" 🙄 I never claim to be off grid and I still get comments "Your not offgrid because ...."🙄 But I made myself live without a microwave and expresso maker long before I moved out here. TV I had but my son lived with me. I don't miss any of those things because I can heat up something on the wood stove and I make some awesome coffee! I would like to get solar but in winter time my panels just would not get enough sun so I would be running a generator every time. I chose to try and figure out a way to just not need electricity when it out. I do need to figure out my freezers but its no big deal in winter! Just drag the freezers outside! And I would rather garden all day long instead of watch TV! 😉🧡
@@AloneinRemoteAlaska We contemplated going 'off grid' at our home base as it is perfect for it. Side of a southern facing hill. But, it ain't cheap! Because you, like our home base, are already hooked up to electric, it really doesn't make sense as far as to save money. But, we do have a propane cooktop and wood cookstove and heat stove, at the house, so when the power goes out, we are sitting pretty. It feels good to be self sufficient. Note on freezers...we have 3 as well and they are outside. We built a sort of porch on the back of our house to hod them. The sun never shines on them and in the winter they rarely need to come on. We did have a young black bear try to open one once. He was trying to tip it forward. Buy they are also locked and he never figured out how to open it. Silly bear!
The great thing about Alaska in the winter is, that if your electricity goes down and you have freezers, we can always transfer the frozen food to an outside shed or into large containers and shove them in a snowbank. As for your pantry shelves, as long as they are anchored, they're good.

I've had the house with all of the conveniences. Had to replace the fridge. Two months later had to replace the microwave. One year later my basement flooded with sewage. The great thing about manual appliances and controlling the water is practically nothing can go wrong. And I'm telling you, drawing a bath that takes 1-2 hours to prepare may be a pain but wow do I enjoy baths so much now! 🤗 Ahh glad you liked the sweater! It was a fantastic thrift store find I couldn't pass up for 5 bucks! 😉🧡
I build custom log homes in North Carolina. Some folks say cabin, and some say log homes? The log structure is such a great structure, and you may call it what you will. I really like how you have designed your home to fit your needs and it seems you have adapted quite well too. Thank you for sharing your way of life with us!

When I was a teenager our local Scout group leader was the son in law of a founder of a well known software company. We used to visit what they called a 'cabin' for overnighter activities. That 'cabin' was in fact a 12k sqft mansion complete with huge home theater, formal dining/ballroom, arcades, several bunk rooms, huge kitchen, and more. Even though that was 25 years ago that 'cabin' was valued over $2M at the time (current value according to the county is $7.7M, Zillow says $12M). I don't dispute them calling that their 'cabin' because for them that's what it was, their smaller cabin that they visited for getaways. Cabin is what you define it.
I 100% agree! If someone builds a 10x10 shack out of pallets and calls it a cabin then that's what it is! LOL home theater! I bet that was a fun place to go though! 😉🧡

Love your setup for doing your wash,and reminds me of the old days when my mom had one of those old fashioned washers,down in are cellar and you had to put the cloths through the rollers to get all the water out of them, and then she would hang are cloths outside on the cloths lines even in the winter omg,then we would have to go outside and take the cloths down and they were freezing and stiff lol and brought them inside to hang and finished drying,and oh we didn't even have a toilet, we used a big bucket with lid,and if you were the last one going and you filled it,you had to go outside and empty it in the old back house,everything back then required work to make something work lol,but those days were the best times in my life,take care nice video also👍😊...

Your videos are so much fun to watch! Love the simplicity as I know first hand about “ off grid “ remote living. I did it for 20 years on a S Pacific Island...wish I was still there. It’s a way better lifestyle if you ask me and more sustainable. I did have a solar system and a large water catchment but still had to haul drinking water. Love your bath set up and new faucet! In Scotland homes had a drying rack suspended from the ceiling. You hung your wet clothes, raised the rack and your clothes dried without taking up any floor space. I have lived 22 years without a dryer. I use a clothes line in warm weather and a rack to dry clothes inside in the winter. My towels are not downy soft but they smell like sunshine.
I for one have never liked a dryer. Yes I have used them but hang drying is the best way. I actually prefer my clothes not to smell like dryer sheets or even soapy. I will take sunshine smell any day! 🤗🧡
Happy Sunday morning Alone! I'm in recovery mode from a week of bronchitis and laryngitis. It's almost impossible to teach without a voice. The pups were quite happy I was home with them most of the week. I made my bi-weekly trip to the local farmer's market yesterday with the intention of figuring out what I was cooking for my sons for Sunday dinner. Joe LOVES brussels sprouts - and one of the farmers had told me he would have them the first week of November. Very soon, I'll be wandering into my kitchen to clean and prepare them for roasting, along with a bundle of fresh red beets. A little olive oil, a little garlic, a little salt, and an hour to slow roast to perfection! Along with that, I'm making Joe's favorite meal - meatloaf and scalloped potatoes. While preparing the sprouts and beets, I'll throw the leaves into a ziplock, along with the onion skins, and that will flavor soup later this winter. I realized that Thanksgiving is only two weeks away - and I have zero bread in the freezer. I made two loaves early this morning. I'm sure the fellas will eat one loaf today, and the other will either become lunch for work or bread cubes for stuffing. I'm making an apple crisp for dessert, which they will enjoy. I'm always glad to see how you manage repairs and construction in your cabin. I loved the explanation of why you hate indoor plumbing - it's loathsome, but necessary when you live in a town. I am realizing just how much I have lost as a result of the respiratory infection - I have less energy, less motivation, and far less strength than I had only two weeks ago. Right now, it's a struggle to carry laundry from the basement to my room on the second floor. I'm hoping that by eating more hearty fare, I will get the necessary vitamins to recover fully. You have mentioned that you don't leave the property from snowfall to melt. Surely 20 gallons of water is not enough to take care of your cleaning, bathing and cooking needs for the entire winter? Do you use melted snow for any of it? Hoping you and Kenai are doing well and thriving in the winter weather of remote Alaska. Deb

I also have (4) 55 gallon drums I will fill with water. But yes, melting snow is what I will do. One of the 55 gallon drums is closer to the wood stove and I can just keep adding snow to it. I don't run out of snow🤣 Deb you take it easy and rest up! Eating better is always a great option. Don't push yourself too much or you will just get sick again! Bronchitis and Laryngitis is nothing to be messing around with! I understand that chores need to still be done even if we get sick. But please do take care! 😉🧡

An old boyfriend partially owned a family "cabin" . That's how they referred to the 2 story, 3 bedroom 2 bath complete house in the mountains. You can call it anything you want. When I do projects I always need another pair of hands too, so, like you , I get creative! So happy your faucet turned out to be such a great success! I think your laundry area is pure genius. Well done ! That was interesting seeing you take a bath. Exactly! But some people just like to correct me! 🤭 Another pair of hands would be great but until that day, hair bands, ratchet straps and duct tape will do! 🤣 I love the new faucet! Way better than the original one! And yeah the laundry system is great for me, it just needed to be sturdied up a bit! Works like a charm now! At least burning trash mean the trash is done now! No waiting for it to get picked up! 🙄 The bathtub is so nice! I have literally fallen asleep in it. Wake up when Kenai wonders why I havent moved for 20 minutes! And he hates the tub! 😝

Yay, you got your faucet in! You can always get more tubing in the spring and hook it up more to your liking. Watching you do that install brought back memories of me doing the same thing in my van buildout, scrunched up on three feet of floor between cabinets...I lived the way you are living now for some years, going back and forth between the US and Nova Scotia to my totally off-grid property there. It sure makes me appreciate the increased comforts I have now in my tiny Blue Ridge cottage. Moreover, I now have no fears of grid-down, should that ever come about. Self-sufficiency has many rewards that can make up for the inconveniences. It's lovely to have the time and patience to create life to your own pattern. Thanks for sharing!
I enjoy seeing how everyone handles different things at their”off grid” “cabins”. Same with “remote”. Remote for you is not having close access to all of the amenities of a city or rural community. For others remote means no roads to their property. Thanks for sharing your experiences and what you have learned so far. We are building a off grid “cabin”. It’s stick frame, but we still call it a cabin as it is a home in a remote area.Your we would refer to as a log cabin. Garbage is always something to think about. I always shed any excess packaging before bringing it to our cabin. Coffee cans become containers for spare parts, nuts and bolts and keeping toilet paper dry in the outhouse. Just curious, have you ever thought about (if and when the day comes) when you leave the cabin for whatever reason, health or anything else, where you might want to move to? Hopefully, that plan is a long way down the road and maybe not too much, (if any) thought given to that at this time, but just curious if you do have any thoughts about that (ever?). I do hope you remain where you live for a long time and stay happy and healthy. You are such a strong and a resourceful woman and so few could do what you do, especially alone. I often read about couples living a similiar lifestyle to yours, even from comments left here or men alone. I wonder how many of those couples would live this lifestyle by themselves? I'm guessing not too many because they want to have that other person there with them (if they are going to live so remotely) so you are probably amongst very few women or men for that matter, anywhere who can do this and know what it takes to live this way.
Get one of the little mini washers. I hav a 10# and its wonderful. Uses very little electric and wrings clothes out to nearly dry. Washes very well . Amazon has them 8# to 20# double wash one side and wring dry other side from bout $100 like the one i hav.!!!!!

I knew a person in my old hometown who used to say “There is an a$$ for every seat”. 🥰 It all works! Different strokes for different folks.

I concur with your decision to take out preexisting plumbing, for all the reasons you stated. I would go the same route you are with your water needs. Yes, it's more work, and like you stated this isn't simple living, it's more work and more time. But what is life but a series of executed activities we do day in and day out. And it's not the activities themselves but the mindset we have toward them, that really creates the kind of reality we have. I think over time you will dig a well, as you stated, and thru the years make modifications and improvements to suit your needs. Love your new foot controlled kitchen faucet. The life I had in Colorado was obviously more simple living. Refrigeration, microwave, grocery stores. But I had my fill of that 🤣 It's not so much I try to find the hardest way to do things though. 🤭 I could dig a hole in my backyard and create an ice house BUT freezers are easier! But if I want to take a bath, I have to plan it a bit an heat the water. To heat the water I need firewood. But I can take a bath anywhere in my cabin! But the planning makes you enjoy it more (in my opinion). I will have a well someday for sure. Having water on property will be a game changer for me! Having that foot pump is a game changer for me! 😉🧡
I was born in Oakland in 1956 and moved to a cabin 9 miles les outside of Grants Pass, Oregon where we lived for 4 years till I played with a large rattlesnake for a Haft hour. Everytime it struck at me, did tippy would knock me out of the way and drag me back. I went at it with a curtain rod. This went on for a haft hour till my mom and dad can out. Dad ran and got the .22 and shot it. Nether Tippy or I got bit and we end up in the new paper there in Grants Pass. We had a rug on a dirt floor of our cabin which I still miss to this day. That is very interesting stuff! Our city water supply was threatened (actually, it still is) due to a wildfire this summer. Boy did I start lugging around buckets of well water & researching composting toilets and outside clothes washing stations. Ya never know, even in the best of situations.
I had a nice back stock of water and buckets for toilets etc when I was in Colorado. More practicing for living here. It's a pain to lug around water in jugs but you are already better prepared than most! Keep it up! You don't have to be a prepper to be just simply be prepared! Thank you so much Julia! 😉🧡

As always, I learn something new when I watch your vlog. Thank you. We solved our frozen cistern water line one year with a 55 gallon barrel and a aquarium pump. Living off grid is not easy. Frozen pipes, frozen septic, snow buried solar panels and hauling water in the colder climates are all facts of this lifestyle and anyone who thinks differently needs to do their homework. Warmer climates just have different types of obstacles. We have lived off grid in both types of climates. Being able to adjust to your circumstances just like you are doing takes commitment. You are doing a great job and dang you can do about everything! Living off grid is not for the weak at heart. It is a lot more work, but it is rewarding at the same time. Awesome video! I take peace and tranquillity from your presentations. The lessons that you teach us you are learning and doing yourself, like a guide. I only worry that nothing unpredicted befalls you. It is one bucket at a time so the bath water is not very deep. Just enough to clean up and the hot water keeps me more than warm. I have fallen asleep in the tub more times than I can count. Sometimes Kenai cold wet nose on my hand making sure I am ok is startling! But I also have to conserve water so taking a bath every 1-2 days will eat up my water supply pretty fast. 🤭🧡
@@AloneinRemoteAlaska In my childhood we only took baths once a week, the rest of the time we did "essentials" with a daily sponge bath. Now in old age I don't shower everyday especially in winter as it's just too drying on the skin.
A roll of duct tape is must have item to have in all households. It could have held the faucet. Check the tubing in and out of the pump until you get it replaced. Stretching out the tubing as you did will cause it to split over time. Nice update.
My plan in spring is to redo the tubing with proper size. This was more of a "make it work for now" but I agree! I will definitely keep an eye on it! I have duct/gorilla tape! I probably use that stuff once a week! 🤣🧡

Had to show that out take so everyone knew how I made that scene work! Still completely family friendly! 🤭The big metal sinks I have purposely do not have stoppers because I don't want to drill a hole in the table. I don't mind having to dump the sink by hand. As for grey water I believe you can as long as you are using a friendly soap. I have seen some that filter through a water plant tank first. They also have grease traps. 😉🧡
I grew up in dry house; my parents drained the grey water into the yard, The grass flourished! Today we have septic tanks, with drainage fields and the grass on top grows well too, remains green in the dry seasons.

I have spoken to some of the locals and they see the same thing over and over. People moving out here thinking life will be "simple". Far from it. My part of Alaska is just littered with old run down cabins. Even the locals thought I would be gone after one winter! Boy are they in for a surprise! And see, you remember that tin bath tub! I cant remember a single bath tub I have ever had! When I do my bathroom again, I will have a metal cowboy tub. But draining to the outside 😉🧡
You might want to consider a sister water collection system .Lived like that for 33yrs .rain run off and snow melt. Had plenty of water . Moved to a new Homestead with city water in the middle of nowhere could not believe they had city water out there . But they did LOL 😂

You live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Where I live in Scotland we used to burn all our rubbish as we never got the dustman calling on us as we lived out in the hills. We had goats sheep and chickens. That was the time of my life as I grew up free from smog in the big cities. I envy you. Enjoy what you have now god bless you. Xxxxxxx

Your lifestyle brings back so many happy childhood memories for me. I grew up in a dry farm house, for the first while we didn't have electricity either. Wash day was like yours, in winter we had clothelines strung through the house, and bathed in front of the stove. In summer we used the laundry rinse water to scrub the outhouse. I couldn't live like that anymore - too old now with back issues but I often long for those simpler contented times.
I am glad I have electricity but I want to only use it as little as possible. Just for freezers and computers. But I do plan on building an ice house. Doing laundry by hand is just fun for me and my clothes get so much cleaner! Dishes by hand as well! But taking a bath daily in front of the wood stove is just SO relaxing! I tend to fall asleep in it! It is funny how I tended to avoid chores I Colorado living in the city but out here, content to do chores is the perfect way to say it! Keeps me busy and away from the TV! :-) I hope you will stick around as I plan on doing so much more to my cabin and property always thinking of pioneer living! Thank you so much!
I’ve called mine a Cabin,house,shed, they can call it what they want. It’s home to me.🙏 I burn most everything. I don’t burn plastic. I do recycle my cans and glass. I make a dump run twice a year. Every thing we buy these days come with some form of garbage… think of how much is in one grocery store. Nice thumb nail. we all thought we were going to see some skin.😂 You have a wonderful week..!!
Isn't it funny when someone thinks you are saying it wrong! 🤣 When it's just myself, making a run to the transfer station twice a year works great. When I have contractors here, not so much! I crack up watching the video where I am trying to lift that heavy trash bag. My son had a hard time lifting it! Had to get some footage though! 🤪 The thumbnail was one of the three they suggest to you when you upload a video. People call my little shack in Spenard a 'cabin'.In actuality its a beat up old Pipeline trailer that got drug across the street from the trailer court and covered with faux log panel siding. But if they want to call it a 'cabin'.....As far as compost toilets I've sold compost worms here in Anchorage for about ten years and lots of people add them to their toilets to help break down compost but also help with odors. If the pit is deep enough they will easily over winter.

We lived in Wyoming until my daddy decided to move to California because his sister's and parents lived. My mama was originally from Wyoming and my daddy alone with my Grandfather and Uncles always filled everyone of each household wild meat. We grew up on moose meat, bear meat, elk meat, deer meat, wild turkeys and pigs. We appreciate everything my parents provided. As we move to California we moved in the country 3 miles from the mountains call Bear Mountain. Myself and both brothers we went to country schools. There where only 2 other homes in the country surrounded by Almond trees. My parents got there mail at there mail box in the country plus we only went to town twice a month. My mama and daddy always can there good, and had 2 freezer full of wild meats. We had our own well of water instead of town water, but my parents always had back up pallets of water for cooking or washing dishes or laundry. We lived in a home, 3 car garage plus studio home daddy built to store the freezers and can foods and dried meats. Winters in Wyoming where tuff but you know you lived in Colorado where my Uncle lives in Denver. Take care 🙂 ❤

I put off watching your video until I had a few moments of peace to ride my exercise bike . It’s my new winter thing . Pick a favorite UA-camr and ride . With just one person ( usually ) I think your dry cabin is a fine idea and does get rid of many potential problems . I would not want to do laundry by hand for my grandsons and us ! I do remember putting my two daughters in the tub to stomp clothes for me years ago when I was a waitress ( $ 2.01 an hour back then ) and times were tough . I imagine you have been going over these things for a long time in your head before you finally got to put them into action and reality. I am enjoying watching your cabins transformation . Rock on 🤘

it is a cabin and a great cabin. oh ya, did i tell you howmuch i love strips ? hahaha. your looking great lady. lol. oh ya, i use an old washer to do my cloths. i fill it with warm water with a bucket and set to wash and start by running off a small generator. i have to watch it as the cycles change like to rainse after draining then add clear water for that cycle, rainse and drain and spin, and done. hang to dry. lol

It’s always a good day when I see u posted a new video. We lived in a “log cabin” in a remote area for years. I never called it a cabin, it was just called our home. It wasn’t til company came from the city called it a cabin, that I realized maybe it was. Anyways, I can’t believe there were comments about that…hahaha too funny. HA! The comments about whether I am offgrid or remote have never bothered me. People who live this life or have lived this life usually don't concern themselves about the "correct" terminology. I think some people just get too stubborn about what things mean or even worse is when someone wants to be "more" off grid than you 🙄I have really been enjoying the new faucet! Off grid parts are here where I'm at. I'm on grid off grid . Don't have a water heater. Use Composting toilets. Have power. Water catchment system for water.....hang up my clothes but also have dryer if need it. Have a oven. On power grid others around me all off grid in Oklahoma. Each place is completely different we say any type of off grid you are off grid. Each place is completely different thank you for that

I couldn't find a Zodi available for purchase while looking for one a few years ago. I ended up purchasing a stainless steel 4 gallon sprayer and then I attached a sink sprayer head on it. You're going to give Moose a heart attack with your bathtub scenes. I'm just kidding Moose. Have you considered using a propane on demand water heater / shower? I was thinking about using a 20 gallon food plot sprayer with pump connected to a propane on demand model.
I have owned that Zodi for maybe a decade! It still just keeps on working and it has been on many camping trips with me in Colorado. I would most likely go the sprayer route next time like you did! 😁My original bathroom in the cabin had a propane on demand water heater for the shower. It was just too old. No plans to replace it now. I tend to really like the bath tub. Moose can handle it!😉 Besides the out takes show I was 100% still fully clothed for the bath tub scene! 🤣🧡
I was stationed in Alaska an the well water was not so good lol , lots of iron , we did have a water treatment plant on base that did well but the smaller USAF sites didn't and no one had white underwear after a time lol . I hear A Berkey water filter will remove iron for cooking and drinking .

I totally agree with you as far as people use the terms of grid, homesteading and cabin very differently. I don't think there's any one answer. It is what it means to you and I personally think you live in a cabin that happens to be your home. I always refer to my tenant's vehicle as his car but it's a SUV. Some people say potato or po ta toe.
You've really worked so hard in turning this place into your own and a more efficient place at that! I really admire your fortitude, drive and passion. You don't see that everyday and you should be very proud of yourself. I know I am of you!!
I agree, living your lifestyle takes a tremendous amount of work. I can't even imagine how you get everything done in a day. Just cooking many things from scratch of preserving takes time and tending after my tenants but my hat really goes off to you.

Lauri I have noticed a huge transformation since you did the food bank hauls! Please keep doing them! It's absolutely amazing to hear you so excited to have so much food! The shoutout was overdue! When I watch other people on UA-cam and they point at a shack made of pallets and say, lets go look inside the cabin, I never dwell on the "is that even a real cabin?" I mean who really cares! It's a cabin to them! Most people complaining about on grid/off grid aren't even living this life! But we all have opinions! 😁
I knew coming out here and living this life was going to be harder. That's exactly what I wanted. I choose to live more pioneer style but I don't fault one single person for having a microwave in their cabin! Running water is a hard thing to give up! I remember taking showers or baths in Colorado and I never even gave them a second thought. But here, I have to plan out my baths and I actually like that. And I love my new faucet and dry sinks! You probably never seen anyone be so excited to use a foot water pump huh?🤣

It's funny how everyone has a different concept of what's what. One man's cabin is another man's house?? My idea of a cabin is different from someone who lives in a big city and can't live without their microwave, espresso maker or big screen tv. Our cabin is very rustic. Sometimes I feel like I'm living in a storage shed! But it's comfortable and cozy when it's -40C! No water here either, except what we haul from the lake. Our power comes from our solar panels, which charge our battery bank. We also use a Yamaha generator to top off the batteries as the winter days are so short the panels don't always get enough sunshine.And when it's running, I take advantage and vacuum the rug. It's my only electric appliance here. Life is pretty basic, but we are content and make what improvements we can as we think of them. Our cabin is miles from any road, so everything gets hauled in by ATV or Skidoo, which does have a lot to do with any improvements we make. We somehow manage to get 1 bar of LTE cell signal. Enough to stay in touch with family, and in the winter we can even watch YT!
I am sure you have heard of a carpet sweeper. I’m over 70 from So. Calif. and we had a carpet sweeper for ever. The rest of your lack of power outage, yuck. I also lived in So. Ca. and had power outs I try my best to keep up. Also we lived in a Mormon area so stocking up was our mantra.

Yeah everyone see's things differently and that's cool with me. Even if someone wants to nicely explain what they think that's cool too. But the comments "Your not remote because ......" 🙄 I never claim to be off grid and I still get comments "Your not offgrid because ...."🙄 But I made myself live without a microwave and expresso maker long before I moved out here. TV I had but my son lived with me. I don't miss any of those things because I can heat up something on the wood stove and I make some awesome coffee! I would like to get solar but in winter time my panels just would not get enough sun so I would be running a generator every time. I chose to try and figure out a way to just not need electricity when it out. I do need to figure out my freezers but its no big deal in winter! Just drag the freezers outside! And I would rather garden all day long instead of watch TV! 😉🧡
@@AloneinRemoteAlaska We contemplated going 'off grid' at our home base as it is perfect for it. Side of a southern facing hill. But, it ain't cheap! Because you, like our home base, are already hooked up to electric, it really doesn't make sense as far as to save money. But, we do have a propane cooktop and wood cookstove and heat stove, at the house, so when the power goes out, we are sitting pretty. It feels good to be self sufficient. Note on freezers...we have 3 as well and they are outside. We built a sort of porch on the back of our house to hod them. The sun never shines on them and in the winter they rarely need to come on. We did have a young black bear try to open one once. He was trying to tip it forward. Buy they are also locked and he never figured out how to open it. Silly bear!
The great thing about Alaska in the winter is, that if your electricity goes down and you have freezers, we can always transfer the frozen food to an outside shed or into large containers and shove them in a snowbank. As for your pantry shelves, as long as they are anchored, they're good.

Cabin or not, it is home. Absolutely loved the first of the video. Something about not having all the convenience and reverting to early times is so alluring. I've had the house with all of the conveniences. Had to replace the fridge. Two months later had to replace the microwave. One year later my basement flooded with sewage. The great thing about manual appliances and controlling the water is practically nothing can go wrong. I build custom log homes in North Carolina. Some folks say cabin, and some say log homes? The log structure is such a great structure, and you may call it what you will. I really like how you have designed your home to fit your needs and it seems you have adapted quite well too. Thank you for sharing your way of life with us!

When I was a teenager our local Scout group leader was the son in law of a founder of a well known software company. We used to visit what they called a 'cabin' for overnighter activities. That 'cabin' was in fact a 12k sqft mansion complete with huge home theater, formal dining/ballroom, arcades, several bunk rooms, huge kitchen, and more. Even though that was 25 years ago that 'cabin' was valued over $2M at the time (current value according to the county is $7.7M, Zillow says $12M). I don't dispute them calling that their 'cabin' because for them that's what it was, their smaller cabin that they visited for getaways. Cabin is what you define it.
I 100% agree! If someone builds a 10x10 shack out of pallets and calls it a cabin then that's what it is! LOL home theater! I bet that was a fun place to go though! 😉🧡

Love your setup for doing your wash,and reminds me of the old days when my mom had one of those old fashioned washers,down in are cellar and you had to put the cloths through the rollers to get all the water out of them, and then she would hang are cloths outside on the cloths lines even in the winter omg,then we would have to go outside and take the cloths down and they were freezing and stiff lol and brought them inside to hang and finished drying,and oh we didn't even have a toilet, we used a big bucket with lid,and if you were the last one going and you filled it,you had to go outside and empty it in the old back house,everything back then required work to make something work lol,but those days were the best times in my life,take care nice video also👍😊...

Before i finished my cabin we had the 7.2 mega quake and where living in a 5th wheel, it seemed like it lasted forever. The ony thing that fell was a can of hair spray. It was surprising being so close to it
Your videos are so much fun to watch! Love the simplicity as I know first hand about “ off grid “ remote living. I did it for 20 years on a S Pacific Island...wish I was still there. It’s a way better lifestyle if you ask me and more sustainable. I did have a solar system and a large water catchment but still had to haul drinking water. Love your bath set up and new faucet! In Scotland homes had a drying rack suspended from the ceiling. You hung your wet clothes, raised the rack and your clothes dried without taking up any floor space. I have lived 22 years without a dryer. I use a clothes line in warm weather and a rack to dry clothes inside in the winter. My towels are not downy soft but they smell like sunshine.
I for one have never liked a dryer. Yes I have used them but hang drying is the best way. I actually prefer my clothes not to smell like dryer sheets or even soapy. I will take sunshine smell any day! 🤗🧡

I'm in recovery mode from a week of bronchitis and laryngitis. It's almost impossible to teach without a voice. The pups were quite happy I was home with them most of the week.
I made my bi-weekly trip to the local farmer's market yesterday with the intention of figuring out what I was cooking for my sons for Sunday dinner. Joe LOVES brussels sprouts - and one of the farmers had told me he would have them the first week of November. Very soon, I'll be wandering into my kitchen to clean and prepare them for roasting, along with a bundle of fresh red beets. A little olive oil, a little garlic, a little salt, and an hour to slow roast to perfection! Along with that, I'm making Joe's favorite meal - meatloaf and scalloped potatoes. While preparing the sprouts and beets, I'll throw the leaves into a ziplock, along with the onion skins, and that will flavor soup later this winter. I realized that Thanksgiving is only two weeks away - and I have zero bread in the freezer. I made two loaves early this morning. I'm sure the fellas will eat one loaf today, and the other will either become lunch for work or bread cubes for stuffing. I'm making an apple crisp for dessert, which they will enjoy.
I'm always glad to see how you manage repairs and construction in your cabin. I loved the explanation of why you hate indoor plumbing - it's loathsome, but necessary when you live in a town. I am realizing just how much I have lost as a result of the respiratory infection - I have less energy, less motivation, and far less strength than I had only two weeks ago. Right now, it's a struggle to carry laundry from the basement to my room on the second floor. I'm hoping that by eating more hearty fare, I will get the necessary vitamins to recover fully.
You have mentioned that you don't leave the property from snowfall to melt. Surely 20 gallons of water is not enough to take care of your cleaning, bathing and cooking needs for the entire winter? Do you use melted snow for any of it?

Indoor plumbing is a personal thing and I understand why some think I am crazy for not wanting it anymore. Maybe it takes me longer to draw a bath or do laundry but I love it. As for my water supply I have 35 gallons in various carry containers that I keep full. I also have (4) 55 gallon drums I will fill with water. But yes, melting snow is what I will do. One of the 55 gallon drums is closer to the wood stove and I can just keep adding snow to it. I don't run out of snow🤣
Deb you take it easy and rest up! Eating better is always a great option. Don't push yourself too much or you will just get sick again! Bronchitis and Laryngitis is nothing to be messing around with! I understand that chores need to still be done even if we get sick. But please do take care! 😉🧡

An old boyfriend partially owned a family "cabin" . That's how they referred to the 2 story, 3 bedroom 2 bath complete house in the mountains. You can call it anything you want. When I do projects I always need another pair of hands too, so, like you , I get creative! So happy your faucet turned out to be such a great success! I think your laundry area is pure genius. Well done ! That was interesting seeing you take a bath. Exactly! But some people just like to correct me! 🤭 Another pair of hands would be great but until that day, hair bands, ratchet straps and duct tape will do! 🤣 I love the new faucet! Way better than the original one! And yeah the laundry system is great for me, it just needed to be sturdied up a bit! Works like a charm now! At least burning trash mean the trash is done now! No waiting for it to get picked up! 🙄 The bathtub is so nice! I have literally fallen asleep in it. Wake up when Kenai wonders why I havent moved for 20 minutes! And he hates the tub! 😝

Yay, you got your faucet in! You can always get more tubing in the spring and hook it up more to your liking. Watching you do that install brought back memories of me doing the same thing in my van buildout, scrunched up on three feet of floor between cabinets...I lived the way you are living now for some years, going back and forth between the US and Nova Scotia to my totally off-grid property there. It sure makes me appreciate the increased comforts I have now in my tiny Blue Ridge cottage. Moreover, I now have no fears of grid-down, should that ever come about. Self-sufficiency has many rewards that can make up for the inconveniences. It's lovely to have the time and patience to create life to your own pattern. Thanks for sharing!
I enjoy seeing how everyone handles different things at their”off grid” “cabins”. Same with “remote”. Remote for you is not having close access to all of the amenities of a city or rural community. For others remote means no roads to their property. Thanks for sharing your experiences and what you have learned so far. We are building a off grid “cabin”. It’s stick frame, but we still call it a cabin as it is a home in a remote area.Your we would refer to as a log cabin.
Garbage is always something to think about. I always shed any excess packaging before bringing it to our cabin. Coffee cans become containers for spare parts, nuts and bolts and keeping toilet paper dry in the outhouse.

Hopefully, that plan is a long way down the road and maybe not too much, (if any) thought given to that at this time, but just curious if you do have any thoughts about that (ever?). I do hope you remain where you live for a long time and stay happy and healthy. You are such a strong and a resourceful woman and so few could do what you do, especially alone.
I often read about couples living a similiar lifestyle to yours, even from comments left here or men alone.
I wonder how many of those couples would live this lifestyle by themselves? I'm guessing not too many because they want to have that other person there with them (if they are going to live so remotely) so you are probably amongst very few women or men for that matter, anywhere who can do this and know what it takes to live this way.
Get one of the little mini washers. I hav a 10# and its wonderful. Uses very little electric and wrings clothes out to nearly dry. Washes very well . Amazon has them 8# to 20# double wash one side and wring dry other side from bout $100 like the one i hav.!!!!!

I concur with your decision to take out preexisting plumbing, for all the reasons you stated. I would go the same route you are with your water needs. Yes, it's more work, and like you stated this isn't simple living, it's more work and more time. But what is life but a series of executed activities we do day in and day out. And it's not the activities themselves but the mindset we have toward them, that really creates the kind of reality we have. I think over time you will dig a well, as you stated, and thru the years make modifications and improvements to suit your needs. Love your new foot controlled kitchen faucet. The life I had in Colorado was obviously more simple living. Refrigeration, microwave, grocery stores. But I had my fill of that 🤣 It's not so much I try to find the hardest way to do things though. 🤭 I could dig a hole in my backyard and create an ice house BUT freezers are easier! But if I want to take a bath, I have to plan it a bit an heat the water. To heat the water I need firewood. But I can take a bath anywhere in my cabin! But the planning makes you enjoy it more (in my opinion). I will have a well someday for sure. Having water on property will be a game changer for me! Having that foot pump is a game changer for me! 😉🧡
I was born in Oakland in 1956 and moved to a cabin 9 miles les outside of Grants Pass, Oregon where we lived for 4 years till I played with a large rattlesnake for a Haft hour. Everytime it struck at me, did tippy would knock me out of the way and drag me back. I went at it with a curtain rod. This went on for a haft hour till my mom and dad can out. Dad ran and got the .22 and shot it. Nether Tippy or I got bit and we end up in the new paper there in Grants Pass. We had a rug on a dirt floor of our cabin which I still miss to this day. Our city water supply was threatened (actually, it still is) due to a wildfire this summer. Boy did I start lugging around buckets of well water & researching composting toilets and outside clothes washing stations. Ya never know, even in the best of situations.
I had a nice back stock of water and buckets for toilets etc when I was in Colorado. More practicing for living here. It's a pain to lug around water in jugs but you are already better prepared than most! Keep it up! You don't have to be a prepper to be just simply be prepared! Thank you so much Julia! 😉🧡

The marine foot pump was a great addition to the kitchen, but it is really slow to use. One must have patience if needing a large amount of water. 😉

As always, I learn something new when I watch your vlog. Thank you. We solved our frozen cistern water line one year with a 55 gallon barrel and a aquarium pump. Living off grid is not easy. Frozen pipes, frozen septic, snow buried solar panels and hauling water in the colder climates are all facts of this lifestyle and anyone who thinks differently needs to do their homework. Warmer climates just have different types of obstacles. We have lived off grid in both types of climates. Being able to adjust to your circumstances just like you are doing takes commitment. You are doing a great job and dang you can do about everything! Living off grid is not for the weak at heart. It is a lot more work, but it is rewarding at the same time. Awesome video! I also live in Alaska and in the winter, I have thrown frozen foods on the porch. Especially when living in Tok. The porch was our freezer.

It is one bucket at a time so the bath water is not very deep. Just enough to clean up and the hot water keeps me more than warm. I have fallen asleep in the tub more times than I can count. Sometimes Kenai cold wet nose on my hand making sure I am ok is startling! But I also have to conserve water so taking a bath every 1-2 days will eat up my water supply pretty fast. 🤭🧡
@@AloneinRemoteAlaska In my childhood we only took baths once a week, the rest of the time we did "essentials" with a daily sponge bath. Now in old age I don't shower everyday especially in winter as it's just too drying on the skin.
A roll of duct tape is must have item to have in all households. It could have held the faucet.
Check the tubing in and out of the pump until you get it replaced. Stretching out the tubing as you did will cause it to split over time.

My plan in spring is to redo the tubing with proper size. This was more of a "make it work for now" but I agree! I will definitely keep an eye on it! I have duct/gorilla tape! I probably use that stuff once a week! 🤣🧡

Had to show that out take so everyone knew how I made that scene work! Still completely family friendly! 🤭The big metal sinks I have purposely do not have stoppers because I don't want to drill a hole in the table. I don't mind having to dump the sink by hand. As for grey water I believe you can as long as you are using a friendly soap. I have seen some that filter through a water plant tank first. They also have grease traps. 😉🧡
I grew up in dry house; my parents drained the grey water into the yard, The grass flourished! Today we have septic tanks, with drainage fields and the grass on top grows well too, remains green in the dry seasons.

I have spoken to some of the locals and they see the same thing over and over. People moving out here thinking life will be "simple". Far from it. My part of Alaska is just littered with old run down cabins. Even the locals thought I would be gone after one winter! Boy are they in for a surprise! And see, you remember that tin bath tub! I cant remember a single bath tub I have ever had! When I do my bathroom again, I will have a metal cowboy tub. But draining to the outside 😉🧡
You might want to consider a sister water collection system .Lived like that for 33yrs .rain run off and snow melt. Had plenty of water . Moved to a new Homestead with city water in the middle of nowhere could not believe they had city water out there . But they did

You live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Where I live in Scotland we used to burn all our rubbish as we never got the dustman calling on us as we lived out in the hills. We had goats sheep and chickens. That was the time of my life as I grew up free from smog in the big cities. I envy you. Enjoy what you have now god bless you. Xxxxxxx

Your lifestyle brings back so many happy childhood memories for me. I grew up in a dry farm house, for the first while we didn't have electricity either. Wash day was like yours, in winter we had clothelines strung through the house, and bathed in front of the stove. In summer we used the laundry rinse water to scrub the outhouse. I couldn't live like that anymore - too old now with back issues but I often long for those simpler contented times.
I am glad I have electricity but I want to only use it as little as possible. Just for freezers and computers. But I do plan on building an ice house. Doing laundry by hand is just fun for me and my clothes get so much cleaner! Dishes by hand as well! But taking a bath daily in front of the wood stove is just SO relaxing! I tend to fall asleep in it! It is funny how I tended to avoid chores I Colorado living in the city but out here, content to do chores is the perfect way to say it! Keeps me busy and away from the TV! :-) I hope you will stick around as I plan on doing so much more to my cabin and property always thinking of pioneer living! Thank you so much!
I’ve called mine a Cabin,house,shed, they can call it what they want. It’s home to me.🙏 I burn most everything. I don’t burn plastic.
I do recycle my cans and glass. I make a dump run twice a year.
Every thing we buy these days come with some form of garbage… think of how much is in one grocery store.

Isn't it funny when someone thinks you are saying it wrong! 🤣 When it's just myself, making a run to the transfer station twice a year works great. When I have contractors here, not so much! I crack up watching the video where I am trying to lift that heavy trash bag. My son had a hard time lifting it! Had to get some footage though! 🤪 The thumbnail was one of the three they suggest to you when you upload a video. I debated it for awhile but didn't really have an issue showing me fully clothed in a tub with fake bubbles added! This is still a family friendly channel! 😉🧡 Thank you Ron!

The best manual way I have found to do laundry is with a five gallon bucket, a hole in the lid and a toilet plunger.
You can call your place anything you want to. It's yours so call it what you like. I call it a log cabin like you do cause it is built out of logs like you said. I absolutely love your cabin and all the changes that you have done to it and I love your property and all the gorgeous views!!! I love it all !!! This includes your videos!!! People call my little shack in Spenard a 'cabin'.In actuality its a beat up old Pipeline trailer that got drug across the street from the trailer court and covered with faux log panel siding. But if they want to call it a 'cabin'.....As far as compost toilets I've sold compost worms here in Anchorage for about ten years and lots of people add them to their toilets to help break down compost but also help with odors. If the pit is deep enough they will easily over winter.

We lived in Wyoming until my daddy decided to move to California because his sister's and parents lived. My mama was originally from Wyoming and my daddy alone with my Grandfather and Uncles always filled everyone of each household wild meat. We grew up on moose meat, bear meat, elk meat, deer meat, wild turkeys and pigs. We appreciate everything my parents provided. As we move to California we moved in the country 3 miles from the mountains call Bear Mountain. Myself and both brothers we went to country schools. There where only 2 other homes in the country surrounded by Almond trees. My parents got there mail at there mail box in the country plus we only went to town twice a month. My mama and daddy always can there good, and had 2 freezer full of wild meats. We had our own well of water instead of town water, but my parents always had back up pallets of water for cooking or washing dishes or laundry.
We lived in a home, 3 car garage plus studio home daddy built to store the freezers and can foods and dried meats.
Winters in Wyoming where tuff but you know you lived in Colorado where my Uncle lives in Denver.

I put off watching your video until I had a few moments of peace to ride my exercise bike . It’s my new winter thing . Pick a favorite UA-camr and ride . With just one person ( usually ) I think your dry cabin is a fine idea and does get rid of many potential problems . I would not want to do laundry by hand for my grandsons and us ! I do remember putting my two daughters in the tub to stomp clothes for me years ago when I was a waitress ( $ 2.01 an hour back then ) and times were tough . I imagine you have been going over these things for a long time in your head before you finally got to put them into action and reality. I am enjoying watching your cabins transformation . Rock on 🤘

it is a cabin and a great cabin. oh ya, did i tell you howmuch i love strips ? hahaha. your looking great lady. lol. oh ya, i use an old washer to do my cloths. i fill it with warm water with a bucket and set to wash and start by running off a small generator. i have to watch it as the cycles change like to rainse after draining then add clear water for that cycle, rainse and drain and spin, and done. hang to dry. lol

A hair dryer works good for heating the tubing to stretch it.
I can't even remember the last time I used a hair dryer! I have a heat gun though somewhere! I still have to redo the entire line so next time I just buy the right sizes! 😉🧡

It’s always a good day when I see u posted a new video. We lived in a “log cabin” in a remote area for years. I never called it a cabin, it was just called our home. It wasn’t til company came from the city called it a cabin, that I realized maybe it was. Anyways, I can’t believe there were comments about that…hahaha too funny. Anyways, I LOVE the idea about using i bolts and copper pipe…love it. Also the faucet…brilliant. Also quite beautiful. Thank you for who you are and being real. HA! The comments about whether I am offgrid or remote have never bothered me. People who live this life or have lived this life usually don't concern themselves about the "correct" terminology. I think some people just get too stubborn about what things mean or even worse is when someone wants to be "more" off grid than you 🙄I have really been enjoying the new faucet! Oh and as far as keeping it real, I get comments on that often too! 🤣 They just call me scammer and to be honest I have no idea what they mean. I just ban them! 😉🧡
Off grid parts are here where I'm at. I'm on grid off grid . Don't have a water heater. Use Composting toilets. Have power. Water catchment system for water.....hang up my clothes but also have dryer if need it. Have a oven. On power grid others around me all off grid in Oklahoma. Each place is completely different we say any type of off grid you are off grid. Each place is completely different thank you for that

You should use your waste and paper for a compost pile, also bath water, dish water and laundry water to water your garden during growing season
I couldn't find a Zodi available for purchase while looking for one a few years ago. I ended up purchasing a stainless steel 4 gallon sprayer and then I attached a sink sprayer head on it. You're going to give Moose a heart attack with your bathtub scenes. I'm just kidding Moose. Have you considered using a propane on demand water heater / shower? I was thinking about using a 20 gallon food plot sprayer with pump connected to a propane on demand model.
I have owned that Zodi for maybe a decade! It still just keeps on working and it has been on many camping trips with me in Colorado. I would most likely go the sprayer route next time like you did! 😁My original bathroom in the cabin had a propane on demand water heater for the shower. It was just too old. No plans to replace it now. I tend to really like the bath tub. Moose can handle it!😉 Besides the out takes show I was 100% still fully clothed for the bath tub scene! 🤣🧡
I was stationed in Alaska an the well water was not so good lol , lots of iron , we did have a water treatment plant on base that did well but the smaller USAF sites didn't and no one had white underwear after a time lol . I hear A Berkey water filter will remove iron for cooking and drinking .
