Hey Debo. Try netting the fish next to you and leaving the net and fish in the water and hold the net handle under your leg so you have 2 free hands to pull him up out of the net.

A few more trips out in the yak, and you wonder why you waited so long to get one. It takes time to get used to it. I've learned to cast side arm so I don't hit the rods behind me. Looking forward to more yak vids.

I like to carry only the essentials in the kayak. Ill throw plastics in a zipper bag and the hard lures in a hard case. A milk crate helps keep them organized. It also limits what you can carry so you aren't bringing too much. I love and hate the kayak, it gets you off the bank but it's also a hassle. Good workout but hate paddling into the wind after a long hot day.

    Nice video Dee!
Those lipless cranks are great in March and April here in Ohio. Multi species lure.
I would put the fish finder on the left side but thats my opinion, I'm no kayak expert. Buy a Ketch board and definitely put a leash on it. I already lost one.

I honestly can say one of the biggest downfalls of kayak fishing is loading and unloading all the gear. It takes me 25 mins to either load or unload all my equipment. It starts to get old after a while.

A successful maiden voyage! Seems like there should be rod holders that hold the rods at about a 45 degree angle, to help prevent hitting the rods on a backswing.

Still prespawn in Iowa? And is this your first yak? ‘Cause if it is, beware of an insidious affliction commonly referred to as “Pimp your yakitis.” I’m in the process of trying to create a 12 step program for those of us with $1,000 plastic boats with $5,000 of shite hanging off of ‘em.

[sing to the tune of Gilligan's Island - many of you, Debo included, can sit this one out]
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale.
A tale of a feeshin' trip, that happened out in Iowa,
To a bearded dude that's hip.
He used to fish out of a yak
    Made of aluminum,
But then he bought this Native boat, and found out that it's fun.
He might have lost a feesh or two,
But he caught them how he likes.
Just wait until the first time that
    He catches a yak pike!
    He'll frog! He'll pitch! He'll throw a ned!
    He'll even fish a jig.
Join us next, dear Feeshin' Friends,
And we'll watch Debo catch a pig!

Like to see the kayak content! There is definitely a learning curve. There will be some struggles. But it’s worth it! I did snicker when you caught the rod behind you. 😅 I had just installed some high speed bearings in my oldest reel last year and on my first trip out with it I snagged my anchor chute and did a high speed backlash. 😂

I’ve been kayak fishing for years now and my kayak is a bare bones stock paddle kayak no gear tracks or anything and I like it just fine, it’s is a bear to load and unload though 13 foot yak isn’t very light lol wheels would be nice but I just drag it, probably will drag a hole in the bottom eventually but such is life for me lol

Great first trip for the Yak Debo. If you hook a giant, they will probably pull you around for a bit. The fact that you caught several with lots of other guys on the water tells me you are way above the average angler. I believe you will do great when you get used to the setup and I look forward to seeing them.

Glad you finally got a yak and no dinks! I've been doing great with a red Cotton Cordel lipless from Wally World. I use a 7' stakeout pole and an anchor trolly and small anchor, but I'm usually just floating along and paddling to stay in position. Wind is your worst enemy on a kayak. Be careful and have a blast!

😆"I said a lot of words after that, but they weren't fit for a video..." I have a lot of that footage myself, lol. Yesterday was a nice big rainbow I dropped on the first jump it took. You pretty much experienced most of the cons of kayak fishing.
You said it. Kayak fishing is sometimes 80% fixing boat position. Wind drives that percentage up. My favorite strategy for dealing with position is to put the ass end of the kayak into the wind. Then you can just slowly but continuously peddle backwards. Second to that is getting a proper anchor setup. Third thing for you to try is a drag chain. When you get into current a windsock can help.
I refuse to do any vertical rod storage. You will inevitably hook your line or another rod when casting. You can snap a rod like that. Your kayak has horizontal storage. Maybe think about using it. And look into the yak gadget rod stager.
One of the biggest benefits of a kayak is you can float over to wherever you're snagged and usually free up your bait. Keep a lure knocker in the boat and/or get the Bending Branches paddle with the hook remover section.
I'm happy for you brosef. Strap that rig on top the vehicle and come down to San Antonio. Let's do some feeshin.

Sounds like you turned a couple teeth on the gear. May be able to lightly file the bad spot back to normal. Finding the bad spot is the fun part lol. Luckily those gears aren't to expensive if you have to replace one. You can get then cheaper on a over seas site over a American site. Aliexpress has some that's not to bad priced.
