I tried, I gave it a fair amount of blood, sweat, and tears, but at the end of the day it was a failure. But my failure is your gain with this fail video on how to make a Japanese hand plane in the traditional way. Since I've gotten into Japanese woodworking and Japanese carpentry, a Japanese hand plane build has been on my to-do list. I spent a ton of time doing research on how to make a kanna, a wooden plane and perhaps the most deceptively simple, yet tricky Japanese woodworking tools. These planes appear much later in history than their western counterparts, and in this video I specifically spend the bulk of time showing how to make a kanna dai. In my opinion, the kanna plane is a proving ground for hand tool woodworkers. This is not made through lamination, but precision chiseling to make a wooden plane from a single block of wood. This fail blog isn't all for naught though, you'll get the basic measurements, understanding of how to set up a Japanese plane, and the layout for proper Japanese plane setup. How to setup a hand plane, especially when it only consists of an iron and wooden body is incredibly important, and knowing how to set up a Japanese plane, with it's chip breaker free assembly, is vital information for the use and construction of this wooden hand plane. Ultimately, I ended up with not only issues with making the perfect body, but discovered some unavoidable defects in the plane iron. With that being said, this video on how to make a Japanese plane wasn't a complete loss as I was still able to use the kanna plane and pull some wood shavings for you. It's my earnest hope, that the basic principles in this video help you understand how to make a Japanese wood plane and inspire you to want to know how to make a kanna plane and ultimately make your own.

It's actually really uplifting to see an attempt rather than a complete success, and I feel better about when I'll make my attempt ~ thanks!!

I’m actually going to start tomorrow on a video on setting up a new hand plane (purchased not made by me) and I think that… in conjunction with this video… will be very powerful in terms of knowledge for making and setting up.

Thank you for sharing this work and experience. I am definitely not ready to build my own kana yet, but I am going to do it some day, and I will use this video for reference. Keep up the great work!

Thanks Jon! The iron is with the blacksmith right now and should be getting reground this coming weekend. When it comes back, assuming it fits I’ll post a shorts video on how it’s working. If not, I’ll have to make a new dai and while I probably won’t do a full video on making that, I’ll post something on it to give everyone a little more context. Thanks for watching again!

Even though you consider it a fail, it still came out great in my completely amateur opinion!
Way better than mine when I made my first dai a couple months back lol.
I made it with a 50 degree bed to have as a last resort plane if I ever ran into any gnarly exotics. Next time I'm gonna use soft maple too, I did mine out of white oak because it was what I had and it came out kinda ugly, but still worked in a "step away from a finishing plane" kind of way. Plus the oak being a little chippy was a big player too.

Yeah white oak i heard can cause issues with the shavings ejecting because of the porous nature of it. Hard maple works too. But I’ve heard rosewood and Osage orange work amazing.

Great video! I imagine that was a lot of work from start to finish, how many hours would you say? I've never made a dai but I am continually tuning my current one and you did better than me... I can't seem to get the right/left balance perfect so one edge of my blade will typically leave a track mark. I can dial it in by laterally tapping the blade but if I hit a knot or too much resistance it has a tendency to get out of alignment.
Edit: Oh yeah, I subscribed. Looking forward to checking out more of your channel!

Yeah I think for the most part kanna doesn’t handle knots particularly well. So as far as work I’d say it took about two full days. I did it in a couple sprints. Basically an hour or two getting the blank together, a quick layout, then an afternoon roughing the throat, a couple hours on the channels for the iron, and then what felt like forever working the fit. I honestly might try the multi tool route just to save me some time and wear on my mortise chisel though. Thanks for watching and keep asking questions!

Japanese woodworkers will sometimes use paper on the bed of a plane to tighten it back up.

Yeah I tried popping a business card back there. The tape worked pretty well. I should be getting the iron back from the blacksmith which should fit better since he’s gonna have to grind off a fair bit of the bevel to address those cracks.

The impatient body language of the two yous is distracting me from the technical details, lol. Otherwise helpful and educational :)

One thing I didn’t cover in the video is tuning the bottom. Maybe I’ll do another video on this in the future.
