one of my favorite things I ever learned about science was that Max von Laue and James Franck, German physicists who opposed the Nazis (Franck was Jewish and von Laue was close friends with many Jewish scientists, including Einstein) had their Nobel Prize medals smuggled out of Germany into Denmark. Unauthorized transportation of gold out of Nazi Germany could be punishable by up to death. When the Nazis invaded Denmark, chemist George de Hevesy dissolved the medals in aqua regia and stored the solution in a flask on a shelf in his laboratory. The Nazis searched the lab thoroughly but never thought that the flask was anything important. The gold was precipitated out after the war and the medals recoined from the original gold. Chemistry frustrated fascism.

I have some notes as a chemist who does this on the regular. 1. Make your aqua regia separate. It needs time to react with itself before it can really be used effectively (this mainly saves time but also allows you to add the correct measurement, not sure why you added some sulfuric to that mix, especially to the Hydrochloric you already added). 2. It is the mixture of Hydrochloric and Nitric Acid in a specific ratio (3 parts Hydrochloric to 1 part Nitric, for those who don't have time to look it up.) 3. Don't wear gold accessories (Your watch) when handling aqua regia if you like said accessories. 4. Just overall more PPE (A labcoat or something with sleeves. Jack, premixing aqua regia 3 to 1, or 4 to 1, is antiquated and no longer used by small gold refiners. It wastes chemicals, and guarantees problems with excess nitric during precipitation. Instead we use incremental nitric dosing. I can dissolve one ounce of gold in 150ml hydrochloric and 15ml to 18ml nitric acid. Very cool thanks for the video. Being in Alaska I have done a little research on finding the ingredients to make aqua regia but the concentration of the acids available to me are not high enough. Keep up the content. Very cool.
He may do this: Perform all steps slowly and keep containers cool while neutralizing. Acid neutralization: Make a basic solution using a large volume of cold water and an appropriate inorganic base. Stir the solution while slowly adding diluted acid. Base neutralization: First add the base to a large vessel containing water. Slowly add an appropriate inorganic acid. Allow the contents to react for 15 minutes to dissipate any heat before testing the pH. The container should not be hot, and the contents should not be smoking. If the container is still hot after 15 minutes, allow the reaction to continue until the heat has dissipated before continuing to the next step. Test the neutralized solution to confirm a pH between 5 and 9, and flush to the sewer with at least 20 parts water.
Its mostly just acid. You neutralize it with something like Baking soda and then it can be sent down a drain. It isnt harmful to anything once diluted and neutral. At least not in the quantities he uses. If your going through drums of it I imagine its a bit more involved. That being said, that is a vast simplification, do not try this at home without proper training.
Hello , what a video , fantastic . Incredible that the gold is just there for the picking with scraps when one knows how to do it . How about a video on how to retrieve gold from electronic and computer-boards trash ? Isn't there gold in computer waist and the electronic likes ? And not only gold , but other precious and rare metals .
Actually it's becoming more profitable now to just go through e waste to obtain gold than to mine it. Quite a few companies are now in the field of mining gold from e waste. Alot of those gold played pins probably cane from old e waste. This is Definitely not something the avg. Person should be attempting after watching a couple youtube video. I work with HCA, Nitric and Aqua Regia note something you should be fucking around with without ample ventilation and filtration. Even outside stay the fuck away from the Fumes compleatly. It takes alot of e waste to accumulate a decent amount of gold though.

1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds. The yield on this was a little over 22 grams. That's about 0.78 ounce. Multiply the current price for an ounce of gold by 0.78 to find the yield. You'll need to estimate the cost of materials, mostly the acids. Also you'd have to consider the cost of the hood, air filtering system, chemistry equipment and disposal of waste materials. Plus the cost of the raw material, the pins. Not to mention the cost of your location for the lab and any transportation costs. Plus the cost of your time. Reality can be a bitch.
@@brianmccarthy5557 Divide the current spot price of gold by 31.1 grams. Multiply that X 22 grams.Your mistake come in the fact that you are figuring an oz as 28 grams which is actually right, but gold is measured in Troy oz which is 31.1 grams to an ounce.

I know this took a lot of nitric to do the refining this way. If you have a starting material that your pretty sure is 99% copper and gold, would it be easier to start with aqua Regia and dissolve it all then add additional copper to drop out the gold out of solution in accordance with the reactivity series of metals or bubble SO2 gas? Or is the gold to copper ratio too low and that would cause problems?

What's the cost of materials to refine? 22g is roughly like $1300 at 100% melt value as of today... Which is great if it's decently cheap to acquire the gold plated pins and material costs... But I'd be curious about the cost breakdown on it.
what is the ratio of hcl, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid without needing to neutralize the nitric acid with urea? how do you know that gold can be precipitated without using urea in aqua regia?
wouldn´t simply heating the nails in a crucible do the same thing? I mean, the gold melts at a much lower temperature than the copper right? so with a bit of heating, won't it just separate itself from the copper without having to use up acids?
Pins cost $1000 chemicals about $300. My time was free (this is my hobby). I sold 15 grams at $99 each. Sold the rest (7 grams) as a necklace for $1200 - so total before taxes and fees was just under $2700, or so.

We need more videos like this one. For two whole minutes, I forgot about the passing of Liv Marit Wedvik.
Very cool thanks for the video. Being in Alaska I have done a little research on finding the ingredients to make aqua regia but the concentration of the acids available to me are not high enough.
Keep up the content. Very cool.
I just watched chemical after chemical through your process and being a miner myself, I wonder ,where do all of your chemicals go??
He may do this:
Perform all steps slowly and keep containers cool while neutralizing.
That's a very good question.
Waste treatment
I mean of you dedicate the time researching and learning that's one thing but without proper PPE this can easily kill you. I work with HCA, Nitric and Aqua Regia note something you should be fucking around with without ample ventilation and filtration. Even outside stay the fuck away from the Fumes compleatly.
It takes alot of e waste to accumulate a decent amount of gold though.
@@Survivalist-of-war Hello sir , thank you for your response and wise advice . I will certainly comply with this and will stay away from acids . Hopefully companies will mine more e-waste in the future , so that these metals (not only gold) are not lost to the economy . All e-waste , computers , mobile phones , etc. , should be collected as trash seperatly , so as not to loose it . The economy and the environment will fare well like that .
@@erwinb3412 I 100% agree with you.
It's so easy even kids can do it on the dirt ground with smoking pots and buckets similar to the kids working the ship breaking yards...
Those darn kids are smashing and melting up all the old VCR's and tube tv's and no one cares
THANK YOU FOR MAKING! i adore gold. i just bought my first gold chain and gold ring last year. 18k why does it feel --- the way it does on the skin? so much to know.
Good idea of making a video like this from time to time 👍
It would be interesting to repeat this experiment with the ferric chloride process, then recover the ferric chloride and copper in an electrolysis cell to see if this can be done with a much lower input cost, and using all that nitric acid.
Or using a homemade carbon arc to burn /melt
"THANK YOU FOR WATCHING"
Lmao that part threw me off big time and I jumped 🤣
Wow! Amazing! Nearly an ounce of pure gold.
Wow, this is very useful. I'd like to do re-enact this!
I thought you got more pins, and then stripped them all in a electrolytic bath in under 3 minutes haha.
Sorry, didn’t mean to deceive
For the ADD fam
That piece of gold looks so beautiful
Everything he completed an action, my brain went: _"Yes; as one _*_does."_*
. . . I have no idea what the hell he's doing, but it was oddly satisfying to watch.
Good stuff 2.2 grams / lb ! 😀
22.!
New Jersey
Umm Georgia, but why?
Bama!
One guess where I'm from...
@@DEATH_TO_TYRANTS umm Tennessee? But for real, you must not be the typical Florida man if you are on a channel this great!
@@AR-ed3xw
You shouldn't believe all the lies. Us Florida Men are actually good people (for the most part) and we are always an experience worth having at least once!
Tennessee is one of my favorite states though. Tennessee and North Carolina. Well, Appalachia in general. But Florida will always be my home if I can help it.
Also, Sreetips and his thoroughness is much appreciated. I don't actually use any of the info he provides, but I do respect that as well. But mainly I just appreciate how he works. He is an artisan of sorts. And he's always struck me as trustworthy for some reason. I've quietly watched his channel for over half a decade and don't think I've ever even commented till now.
Anyhow, I'm rambling. Be well amigo. Most importantly, stay free 🖖
This, sulfuric acid stripping cell and acid/peroxide are the three ways that I know of
Very cool champion
What a great guy to share this. Thank you
I was stoned and mesmerized by the video, completely forgetting my volume was at max with Bluetooth. The deep soothing voice in the end became a nightmare 😅😅😅😅
Sorry
@@sreetips incredible video tho!! Just caught me off guard 🤣
Pleasantly surprised 😍 That's a nice bit of gold worth some money
I would like to know if ferric chloride can be used in the phase of getting rid of base metals instead of acids that are expensive..
I’ve heard that it can but I’ve never used it.
That sure is a pretty piece of gold !!.
Good job.
Nice yield! Very high quality pins you had there. And love the fast video. Good job sir. 👏 love watching your videos.
I thought there was no sound and blasted my speakers up to try and catch something....then right at the end that "THANKYOU FOR WATCHING!" Nearly burst my eardrums. THANKYOU FOR BURSTING MY EARDRUMS!
Sorry
@@sreetips haha, it was a joke. My eardrums are 👍
A video describing chemical disposal would be a good idea if you haven't already... thx for another great video
Man thats so cool!!! Id love to try this someday
What filter fineness do you use to separate the gold from the metals? I mean the last stage of filtration. well thank you
It’s a medium-flow number 2
Do you recover the copper aftrerwards? And/or neutralize the acid so you're not polluting?? Just wondering. Thx!
Yes
Cool ...looks like a very satisfying process 🙂
That's wild!!! All that for a dime maybe nickel size gold nugget! Alot of work but it's definitely AWSOME !!!!
My grandfather who was the meat cutter for the Plumas-Eureka gold mine in northern California went blind and had to go to a sanatorium in Reno. He was in his early 40's. The processing mill used mercury to separate the "fines" from the coarser tailings and then got rid of it in Jameson creek which unfortunately was the town's water supply. Over the time of a few years he did regain some sight but not enough to work anymore. My dad was on his own at the age of 14. At 17.5 he joined the navy to fight in WW1. Modern living through chemistry.
I don’t use mercury in any of my processes. Cyanide either.
Hello Street tips. I have a question. I have gold pins I have been trying to dissolve in 67.2 % nitric acid but it never fully dissolved them and I keep having to add nitric acid. I also had some of the blue plastic that the pins were inside of in the mixture and now it's bubbling up pretty badly like there's dich soap in it and some of the pins also had the solder on them still but now in my bucket it seems to be a bluish mess with some of the pin not dissolved and the plastic isn't dissolving either it's just kinda dissolve some of the plastic but what's going to be the best for recoving the gold from this. Do you have any advice. Thanks
The only pins I’ve attempted were copper base metal. I’m not sure what you have there.
Love this video ! Subscribed and liked :)
Welcome!
I subbed man great vid love your kit what you got.
Hi - I liked your video - thank you very much.
Did you use any heat with the nitric and pins?
Yes, much heat was applied.
Once added to the knotts Berry acid amor what did you boil it to? and how long did you boil it for?
Until it was done.
Hi I have some gold plated jewelry and its plated on a Iron metal is there any easier method I can do to retrieve the gold off them please help me thanks 🙏
The gold can be stripped off in a sulfuric acid stripping cell
Great work from a master!
1 week of work brought to my eyes in under 3 minutes....courtesy of youtube and a very skilled Senior Chief.
What's the cost of materials to refine? 22g is roughly like $1300 at 100% melt value as of today... Which is great if it's decently cheap to acquire the gold plated pins and material costs... But I'd be curious about the cost breakdown on it.
The pins cost $1000
what is the ratio of hcl, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid without needing to neutralize the nitric acid with urea? how do you know that gold can be precipitated without using urea in aqua regia?
HCl to nitric about 10 to 1.
What do you do with the waste acids and other recovery liquids? Pour them down the drain? How much does it cost to dispose of these things properly?
Every drop gets treated prior to disposal. I spend about 10% of my time working on waste treatment.
You done a great job doing gold I want to learn to do the stuff thank you OMG😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Thank you for the video. What kind of solution was in the sprayer??
Water
I want One🤗
Awesome👍 Video 👏
Firstly where do you get gold plated pins from? Secondly where do you get a hold of the acid that seperates the gold from the pins?
I bought pins on eBay $1000. Nitric can also be purchased there
that was awesome! what did you put in the beaker to make it precipitate gold? were those tablets?
I use sodium metabisulfite to precipitate the pure gold.
Best of UA-cam!! 🎥
You are very well educated and prepared for this. Would this kind of technique work for salvaging gold from scrap computers?
Possibly
What is used to precipitate the gold after disolving it in the Aqua Regia?
Sodium metabisulfite
wouldn´t simply heating the nails in a crucible do the same thing? I mean, the gold melts at a much lower temperature than the copper right? so with a bit of heating, won't it just separate itself from the copper without having to use up acids?
I only wish that it was that easy. The metals will alloy together on heating. They don’t separate. Getting pure gold is never quick and easy.
nice not bad for making about 1K usa dollars.... but then again whats the cost of the acids and machine tools you used ?
OK... so how much did the pins cost vs. The 2/3 oz. Of gold ? Minus the solvents and time it took to do it
Pins cost $1000 chemicals about $300. My time was free (this is my hobby). I sold 15 grams at $99 each. Sold the rest (7 grams) as a necklace for $1200 - so total before taxes and fees was just under $2700, or so.
What was in the beaker when you added the pins but before adding the nitric acid?
Distilled water
