  • So a few weeks back I had to travel to Raleigh,NC for Family. while there I made it a point to go to the yearly "rarsfest". Its a ham festival that is HUGE!
I picked up a ton of cool stuff so stay tuned for part 2 and I'm sorry for the shaky cam. This was my first time doing a video like this.

Great video Erik. Phone patch...Back in the late 60/70's My Father did a great deal of phone patch via Ham 15/20 meters to our troops in Vietnam. I can recall many times my Father would call a soldiers Family here in the States and instructed them on how to communicate from phone to airwaves using certain basic radio vocabulary prior to contacting isolated military bases. My Brother was based in Vietnam during the era, and had a list of fellow soldiers Family phone numbers which were passed on to my Father for him to initiate the phone patch operation. My Father also worked my oldest Brother who was also in the military "Navy" at the time who was stationed at McMurdo Station Antartica, used to watch my Father fire up his home brew amp and communicate using phone patch to the South pole as well.
Very interesting to say the least!!!
    Thanks for sharing!
    Kind regards Eric Dee

Really cool story! What a great way for HAM's to help GI's stay in touch back in the day.

When you were talking about the truck with twin 102" whips brought back memories, I ran twin 102" stainless steel whips on my 1968 Chevelle SS up until the early 90's. Those were the best.

They did, however it was like a beam antenna, kinda dead off the back, but strong out front.

Ah hamfesst, where it's hit or miss if you will actually find a deal or not.
I went to one in Louisiana a couple years ago while visiting some people, and bought an IFR1200 Service monitor the guy wanted $1400 but on the last day I used that good ole Las Vegas smooth talk and I talked him out of it for the rock bottom price of $350 and he carried it to my truck and included a NEW battery for it... Yes it worked, no scratchy pots all the buttons worked the display was good and bright and it was in calibration...
I hauled it back to Vegas and sold it locally to a Ham guy for $2500, so yeah I made my money back for the monitor and the trip. I mean I didn't need it I have a later model IFR Com 120B...
Aside from that I did win a door prize, some Icom HF mobile radio.
I will say this, I cringed at some of the vehicles and how tacky they looked with all those antenna on them, I mean you pay $40K or more for a car or truck and you put all that shit on it like that?? Those guys really know how to fuck up a vehicles value..

A few weeks ago, after getting off work, I saw a car with, what I thought at the time to be a oversized CB antennae. Turns out I know learned it was a Ham antennae. It was about 6.5 feet in height. I’m in MN and I found that partially out of place because I’ve never seen that before. And it was trunk mounted. And the surprising factor is that it looked to be MagMounted.

Hamfest are a GREAT way to spend a day, meet lots of people and find some real bargains! I got my ham ticket at a fest and set up my first shack. If you ever get a chance, go to Dayton HamFest in Ohio. 73's, KBTAE

That's whats cool about new hobbies. You don't have to know anything about them, you just have to be interested enough to learn it.
I know when I first started playing around with radios that I was clueless, but It sure was fun figuring it all out. Hang in there and I hope to hear you on the air someday!

I want the Marshall guitar amp. :-)
The amp shown at 5:00 is the same type Mower Junkie just uploaded a video on today (6-15-2020).

I think qsradio as seen here is one of the few really worthwhile general doodad dealers. John has things that no one else does. The people selling junk are a waste of time both for themselves and for buyers. I don't even know why they bother showing up, and the used ham equipment dealers are usually dreaming when they price stuff.
It's gotten more and more that eBay is my hamfest. I can go any day or night, and there's no admission fee.
Sorry if I rained on anyone's parade.

I can say that Hamfests are a great place to get a WAY better price on a lot of the stuff I like to play with. Prices on Ebay tend to be to high for me lately.
As for them being full of junk, I'd say the old ""one mans trash is another man's treasure"" couldn't be more true here. I say TONS of cool stuff for cheap, and while I wasn't interested in a lot of it I was glad to see someone saving it from the trash.

Yes, it's tough to watch with all the shaking, but thanks for bringing the fest to us. You are more of a home/fixed camera UA-camr, for this you would do better with a video gimbal stabilizer. However $200-$800 for a descent gimbal or put that money into your radio equipment hobby that you enjoy. Either way thumbs-up for content and effort. Thanks!

I used to attend almost every month the TRW Ham SWAP in the parking lot of TRW Space n Sat in Redondo Beach, CA. Some fantastic Stuff and great info.

I was like a kid in a candy store. I had to be really careful not to get carried away. Part 2 of this will show all the neat stuff I got. A lot of it is to resell to pay for the rest, but I picked up some neat old stuff to keep as well.

I am about to put back up, my AM 1600 Part !5 30' all pipe mast with a 10' 3/4 Copper Antenna on top, here at this place, But I just purchased another lake place (moving there) and I will be able to cover all around the lake and play at running a real legal Part 15 AM radio Community Station with my 4 stick roan tower, plus mast on top and my new Hamilton Rangmaster AM transmitter, 1/100 of a watt. Maybe 2 miles with good ground.

    • @FarpointFarms

My FREE Frugal Homestead You are not going to believe this, but I too run a part 15 AM radio station. 1670 "wasted radio" has been on the air since 2001, and what's even more crazy is that I use a Hamilton Range Master as well! They are made right here in NC.
      What are the odds??

I worked in, ran TV studios, fixed and kicked tv gear, produced and directed studio, field, single camera and Multi Camera Studio and Mobile Truck shows. owned 2 trucks, production equipment, edit and duplication suites. I purchased stacks of used and broken gear, repaired and built on others rejects. We think alike, I think. Have you got the Rangmater spiting out the strong signal ? Whats your best reach in range ? Ground rod or radials ?
I have a few (9 = I think) talking house transmitters also.........I kinda dove in. I work with my buddy, I meet when I moved up here, he started and got licensed for 2.500 watt Transmitter acts like = to 25,000 watt FM on the new High Site, I helped him move the Transmitter up top a hill above town. I just shot with my new camera Friday night a benefit concert at his station, so I need to learn a bit about my camera and hope to start to put up some video.....

I bet you could smell the electronics at that event. Yes, electronics do have an odor. What do you look for to be able to see if there is something like this hamfest in my area? What are good keywords to use?
    Thanks
