I love how Killing Ground ends and seedlessly transitions into Poltava. From The Swedish Empire's greatest victory to its most disastrous defeat.
This battle wasnt necessarily the Swedish Empire's greatest victory but it was one of the earliest decisive victories of the great northern war that established Sweden as a formidable force.
The Swedish version of the song has a much bigger emphasis on the attrocities committed by Swedish forces to the captured enemies
(not my translation):
"See how the Russians surrender, Begging for mercy
Mass murder, not heroism
Caroleans take revenge
honor is lost."
I like to think the brutality shown by the Swedish is perhaps one of the contributing factors that motivated their enemies to keep fighting despite losing so badly time and time again. Eventually this would culminate in the disastrous Battle of Poltava that effectively neutered Swedish military might. The Russians simply returned "an eye for an eye"
That... is not in any way, shape, or form what the song is about. It's literally about war crimes. It's not even subtle.

The Caroleans really are one of history’s most under-appreciated fighting forces. Sure they only had a 40 year heyday, but they were truly elite soldiers. This whole album and this song in particular give them the recognition they absolutely deserve.
I think less people heard of the black army
I will admit there one of my favorite unites in Civ 5. its shame my knowledge of them was so limited for so long.
The Caroleans were considered one of the best units during their prime, because of their fearlessness, devotion to The Lord, being able to win battles against armies twice their own (which Killing Ground shows due to covering the Battle of Fraustadt) and the fact they used PIKE formations in an era of muskets
@@regalblade8171 Yes and their ability to walk under fire about 10m away enemy line before firing devastating volley on enemy line followed by melee charge.
@@Juhnimus the enemies has horrible hit rate because "Strong Faith", "Reputation" and "Discipline" lowered it to such a degree
I always thought that the English and Swedish songs from Carolus Rex were quite identical. Today I learnt, they are not. The English version almost glorifies the battle and Swedish heroism while the Swedish version deals with the far more severe topic of war crimes. Fascinating!
And they both sound great.
I'm curious if Swedish history paints a different light on the battle, than English/USA historians?

@@Haldir3003 there is no perception of it in the US. The only battle from the Great Northern War I recall learning about in AP European History was Narva.
@@m0nkEzour class talked about Narva when my teacher started rambling on about underdog stories and he said Narva. Never went over as topic though.
As a kid, my great grandfather sparked a love of history with his tales of his time in the British Homeguard during WW2.
Then as a teenager school was hell bent on extinguishing that interest, that passion!
I'm glad I found sabaton in my 20s to reignite that passion!
Especially carolus. School barely covered our own history, they really didn't bother with world history. Hastings, the somme and D Day. That was your lot in my school!
Soon as time travel is invented I'll take my sabaton cds to my teenage self and say "Here, thank me later!"

same here, the thing i got told was about and from the Nazi side. i am a Swede, my fathers family side is German ( few generations ), my grandfather´s brother lived in Germany joined the SS early on. and fled to Swede as many Germans did in the end of the war. and after the war. He told me a lot of stuff then i was young.
@NiclasHorn My grandfather was one of the many Nazi Germany sympathizers in Sweden during WW2. Was involved in some organized youth movement. His tales made it very clear to me that there was so much more such sympathizers in our country than our history books and media gives the image of.. times before the world knew the crimes and horrors revealed in the post war era

Killing ground is one of Sabaton‘s underrated song, I love listening to it, happy to have lyrics video now.
never thought i’d see a “historic metal” band but here came sabaton! got into their stuff about 2-3 months ago and this song is one of my personal favorites, behind 1916, long live the king and stormtroopers. keep this up! your music not only inspires, but educates. night witches was the reason i started more research on the soviet union! props to you all.

Fun fact: the picture on the Video is from a Movie scene of the Battle Of Poltava, One Swedish Soldier dual wielding a sword and his musket was rampaging the Russian Line during the Swedish Charge, until A Russian Soldier stabs him in the Back, that soldier must've have a good time rampaging until some Russian Guy says "Sorry Man, but Peter Told me to Do it"

@@ladywaffle2210 Nope. The letter from Rehnsköld, written a short while after the fact, makes it clear the russians were the victims. He explains that no quarter could be given due to the amount of prisoners and the battle still being in full effect.
The Enemy General told his men “show no mercy and take no prisoners” first, once you throw that gauntlet down their is no taking it back. “Oh apparently we’re getting our dicks kicked in by the Swedes, just kidding about the whole no mercy thing”
To be fair, the Geneva Convention hadn't happened yet

I agree, but would also like to say that the English version doesn't capture the clarity of the Swedish version in this part. It still mentions the atrocities commited, just in a slightly toned down way.

I find it kind of ironic that the background picture is a russian stabbing a swede and not a swede stabbing a saxon
Apparently, the English translation makes it sound more epic than it was, which was a war crime where surrendering/retreating men were murdered by Swedish soldiers.

The Battle of Fraustadt. Sweden vs Saxony and The Tsardom of Russia.
Sweden lead by Carl Gustaf Rehnskiöld had 9400 men (3700 infantry, 5700 cavalry). Saxony & Russia lead by Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg had 20000 men (16000 infantry, 4000 cavalry, 32 artillery pieces).
Sweden won while only losing 1500 men (452 killed, 1077 wounded). Saxony & Russia lost 15000 men (7377 killed, 7300-7900 captured).

I would like to know why in the portrait it is the Russian soldier who prevails over the Swedish soldier. I have read historical literature on the topic of the Battle of Fraustadt, and clearly there is no smell of victory for the Russian troops, yes, there are disputes about war crimes on the Swedish side, but that is not my question. I suppose the soldiers should switch places, since Fraustadt is considered a crushing defeat for the Russian troops, don't you think that switching places would fit perfectly into this lyric video?
