    I work at Oldsmobile back in that time. I had ordered one of those Hurst Olds cars. As was the policy back then you could watch your car being built so I followed my car down the line as it was being assembled. I kept the car or three years but always had transmission problems with it. they were notorious for having problems with this transmission. So after the fifth time it was repaired I sold it. Mine had glass-paneled sunroof. The T-tops look nicer but always had leak problems.

    It seems like I always have a related car story to your videos. When I was in college, my girlfriend worked at a tanning salon and the owner had a Hurst Olds just like this. He let me take it to the grocery store for a beer run and I really enjoyed driving it. Cool car!

    When these came out I was in High School and man I LUSTED after them. A local GM dealership had them in the showroom and I got my oldest brother to take me there and look at them. I just stood there in awe. The black like this one is what I preferred over the silver. Warren Jontson campaigned these in drag racing too and I had a poster of his car hanging up in my room.
    I ended up working at the same dealership after I graduated in the body shop. We had some neat cars come and go when I worked there but they never were as cool to me as the Hurst Olds of that year.

    "Lightning rod shifters" guaranteed to confuse even the most experienced parking valet. Mass of pipework and tubes under the hood seem to strangle the V8 in more ways than one, but who cares with an exhaust note like that ? Great video presenting a rare model and enthusiastic owner. Cars don't come more '80s than this !

    The 'Lightening Rod' shifters are awesome, but at 3,500 pounds and with only 180 bhp & 245 lbs-ft of torque you would literally have to be hit by a bolt of lightening to beat another car off the line.

    I think 84 was the last year for hurst/olds lightning rod transmissions. After 84 hurst was gone and 85-87 they were just called 442 after that. Something like that.87 wasn't the last year for 442s.They kept it as an option for a while after that.I was told that it was an option even in fwd cutlass'.For how long I'm not sure.I would have have taken one of these over all other GMs like Camaros or TAs . Where I grew up the Cutlass Supreme, Montys , Malibu were super popular .The type of cars where you could sneak 3 people in the trunk and go to the drive in.You could also bang in the back seat.

    awesome car! fyi, those are the wrong wheels. it should have 15" with grey accents and a red pin strip. The black accent wheels are standard cutlass 14" wheel.
    also she forgot the 84 h/o in her framed gallery collage. not criticizing, just passing on details from another H/O owner.

      @charles2241 6 років тому +1

      Yup, for all that added glitz of all those dumb signatures, the lack of the original wheels hurts the look quite a bit. That was a rather distinct addition to the car, that you had a wheel with a red stripe running around it.

    Weird! Lou, you featured a 71 Charger R/T in Red like the one I had, and now you featured a car that my Dad had!! His had the T-tops as well and low miles. The trans went bad and he had it rebuilt by a local shop twice and they never got it right! Love this car over the 1984 version that was silver on top and black on the bottom. Nice car. 307 is the cubic inch on these. They moved out well. Sounded great as well. Low restriction mufflers. Keep these coming. I have a 79 Lil Red truck, you should do one of these. 78 or 79.

    That car needs to be built to Grand National performance. They are so similar in appearance. I always wanted Pro Street Hurst/Olds. Used to watch Warren Johnson race his Pro Stock Hurst/Olds against Bob Gliddens Thunderbird. The shifters were like the ones on a Lenco trans in the NHRA Pro Stock cars. Launch with the clutch then pull each shifter back one at s time. These cars just didn't have any real power.

    So sad they put so much effort into making it look fast, and then it has a whimper. Sheesh, even my fairly weak 4cyl will outdo it's 0-60. I loved the look of this car at the time, but it was way too expensive for me, and I was probably fooled into thinking it was fast. My later 84 1/2 Mustang GT was a much better deal for performance. I would think the Grand National, which maybe came out around the same time, was a much faster car than this Hurst.

      You're right Charles 22, Many cars from the mid 1970's thru mid 1980's we're not fast compared to today's cars.

      Yes, the number of cars seemingly all hell bent on getting 1000HP is just ridiculous. It's so useless to have so much HP and all you have is the streets. It would be fine if you lived close to a track and it was a second car. I have to wonder when another HP en masse drop is going to occur, because before they blamed it on lack of fuel economy, and yet not too much has changed since then, yet we now are putting out cars that are more explosive than the old ones. Part of the difference, I guess, is that you're getting similar results from smaller engines, therefore you're not making hot rods any more that get 12 MPG, but maybe 17MPG.

      Lou Costabile Let's not kid ourselves. These cars weren't even considered quick when they were new.

      Hi Guy Stevens, Before you share your "Expert" critique on my video, lets hope I don't find the cute dog in your ONLY video which now that I've watched it is up to 3 views because I think I know why he's barking like crazy because with your rudeness I think he's going to bite your a$$ :-) Stay well, Lou P.S. I have many Buicks on this Channel you'll enjoy.

    What was the problem how come we didn't get a better shot at the engine it's not even an Oldsmobile engine please this is what I don't like about these videos when they start hiding things like that and that ain't no great American vehicle either please by the mid 80s things are really on their way out big time
