oh my gosh ruta literally has such a pleasant voice like wow i could listen to her all day also she's SO PASSIONATE about her writing and her research!! she makes feeling passionate look so effortless, i love it
Living in Russia, I was always very familiar with our history, and I didn't understand how people in other countries haven't even heard about Stalin and all the terrible things our people been through. But I myself have never heard about Franco and the horrible things that happened in Spain. This video made me do my research, it was very educational along with being so interesting and nice! Ruta is the loveliest person. I'm really looking forward to reading her book, thank you so much for this interview, Christine!
Have you ever read about the atrocities of the milicianos, the Spanish Chekas, the popular "trials" , the persecution and murder of priests, destruction of works of art because their religious theme and the torture of Trotskyists (POUM) by Stalin's agents in the convent of St. Ursula in Barcelona? There is a novel about that period called One Millon Dead by Jose Gironella. Read it if you can get it.
This might sound weird, but I fell in love with Ruta Sepetys without even have read her books; she is so well-spoken and so intelligent, I think she is also a Ravenclaw. Thank you for this video, it contained so much helpful tips. It was so interesting to learn about Ruta Sepetys' writing process. I hesitate to think of myself as an aspiring writer because the process of writing the story is difficult and intimidating for me, the brainstorming of it is the most fun. This was a great, fantastic video! Now, I really really really *REALLY* want to read Ruta Sepetys' book. This video just really has an impact with all the things the author talked about, can't thank you enough for bringing this to us. Every time when I need a boost, I will come back to this video!
+Sarah NightOwl I know right!! I wanted to read her book before this but after seeing this video and how passionate she is about this book i will maybe use the money I've been saving for months now to buy this instead of the Infernal Devices and i LOVE the shadow hunter world.
This is my favourite of your author interviews yet, Christine! I loved the interesting questions and Ruta's passionate answers. Now I have to pick up Salt to the Sea!!
I've never actually heard of Ruta but she seems like such an amazing and intelligent person. This books also sounds great I'm definitely gonna have to check it out :)
I am so looking forward to her next book. The stories of those people are very important to Spain and there are a lot of cases of them trying to find their true relatives. There have been a few TV series telling the story, like 'Niños Robados' which translates to Stolen Children.
STOOOOOOP!!! 🛑✋ This video is a gem! But watch it after reading the book. I suggest reading it knowing AS LITTLE as possible, that way, you experience the shocking moments at the same time as the characters.
Wow, she's so articulate and intelligent. Every time she talks the words just flow out of her so easily and effortlessly. I bet that's what the book is like. I feel like I should read it now.
i read between shades of grey when it came out and i've been anticipating salt to the sea for a while, but now knowing how wonderful and in love with her job Ruta seems to be makes me want to read it even more!

Ahhhh I loved this video! I'm so upset that I missed Ruta's stop in Oakland during the book tour because I absolutely LOOOVED this book so, so much. I read it in 2 sittings and was a complete emotional mess after. These characters and their stories touched me greatly (except Alfred obvs). It's been 2 weeks since I finished the book, but I still can't stop thinking about it uuuuggghhh. Everyone needs to read this amazing, lovely book.

Christine, Ruta Sepetys is clearly a Hufflepuff the fact that she does a lot of research does not mean she has to be a Ravenclaw! Hufflepuffs are intelligent too and can do whatever they like, the difference is that Hufflepuffs do whatever they like with a huge smile, effort and love! I'm a proud Hufflepuff 😍😍
I'm so impressed by this author! She is amazingly well spoken, and you can really feel her passion! I've written a few short stories mostly for school but it was so great to hear her talk about characters coming to life because it is so true. Excited to read this book!

So so happy to seethat more and more people are learning about this dark period of time by reading Ruta's incredible books. I'm Lithuanian and at first after I read Between Shades of Grey and read all the reviews possible I was so surprised to see that there were just a few people who knew about that situation during and after WW II. Loved the interview so much, you can see in her eyes that she loves what she does. A true inspiration
Ruta is one of my favorite writers, she puts so much into her stories. Her first novel was the book that inspired me to start discussing books on my blog! :)
SPOILERS! Just you talking about Emilia breaks my heart! And the worst part was that I thought she made it while reading the letter! Also, I made a goodreads update for the Poet a page before the life boat debacle... I also love how this book was connected with Between Shades of Grey!

Well, the sinking of the freighter was not really a crime, as it was usual for armies to attack ships that are transporting troops and personnel
