Planetary nebula challenge - How small is TOO small ?

  • Recently I tried using my Celestron C9.25 at its native focal length of 2350mm without the reducer and decided to find a couple of obscure targets. I settled on a couple of planetary nebula down here in the Southern Hemisphere. It's no Hubble but these targets do offer something different even if simply how little they are imaged and how they can stir the imagination.

Wow! This is so interesting because it just feels like exploring some part of the universe that many people haven’t seen or even heard of.
Maybe you even have some moments like Sir William Herschel back in the days like Sophie Paulin who found a new Nebula by accident and it was thus named after her and her friend.

Hey thanks pal for checking out the channel. Indeed some of the Astrophotography channels do still find very obscure objects or supernova happening within them.

Superb Ollie! These Planetary nebula are awesome target, I recently imaged the ring Nebula (here in Lyra Northern hemispher)! That nebula looks like a stretched Ring Nebulan

Hey Avanteesh you're right these are very interesting targets to image.

Both cool looking targets and a damn good result for only one and bit nights imaging. NGC3699 especially looks like it's got some quite interesting detail. I'm imaging NGC5189 which has some really cool intricate detail esp in OIII and I think would be a nice target for your SCT as it's still a descent size and relatively bright.

Hey Logan yep I think 3699 could definitely have some more detail pulled out. That 5189 like you looks like a good candidate too. We're back to so few clear skies here at the moment.

Awesome Ollie I do like planetary nebulas but like you say they're so tiny but you've done well to get what you have on them

Cheers Tich ye I think the larger of the two could be worth gathering more data on.

Nice challenges Ollie. I've just processed the Bug Nebula taken through my SkyWatcher Esprit 120 (FL 840) and even though it was tiny I was able to get enough detail to make it worthwhile. I'm now processing the Eight Burst nebula and that really is at the limit of my rig's resolution ... but again the challenges in trying to process it makes it a worthwhile exercise.

Agreed Frank these little nebula can be a lot of fun. That bug nebula looks very nice, not heard of the Eight Burst thanks.

Nice work - I'm going to have to give NGC 3699 a shot myself!

Cheers. I think with some good time on it could get a decent result on it.

Nice shots! NGC 3699 needs more time on it :)

Hey James - Absolutely, I think of the two this is more worth pursuing. Hope you're going well pal.

That Retina nebula is beautiful, What size scope/focal length would you need to get it right? yours looks great considering

Hey Nik, yes you'd need some pretty decent sized aperture on this. A C14 would do a fair bit better.

Hey, came across your channel via your video on the Starizona reducer, I am planning to buy one and in the video I saw that your current system introduces a tilt. Were you able to solve that issue ? I am planning to buy the starozona reducer as well and your help will be appreciated. thanks!

Can't remember which video I have any tilt in, but it's not been enough to worry me. The reducer is more than worth it. 👍
